Top 100 recruit visits today
DaJuan Johnson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Southwind High School in Memphis, Tenn., will make an official visit to Marquette today.

DaJuan Johnson, eh? ::) I was hopeful JaJuan Johnson would be visiting, not his evil twin from a parallel universe.
Christ... It's Jajuan Johnson. Damn paper can't even get the guy's name right.
And here we thought Enlund was just mailing it in.

MU's new beat writer, Rusty Kuntz, is all over this story.
QuoteIf the Golden Eagles sign Johnson during the early signing period next month, they will be one over the scholarship limit and would have to make adjustments next season.
Mr. Hunt laying the groundwork early.
Not to mention that he is wrong. Otule isn't official.

And considering Otule's sixth year is not granted until after the season that is technically a false statement at this time.

He seems a little short for our needs in the pictures, but he was in 24 with Jack Bauer so he must be a badass.
So they're taking their official visit today but staying for tomorrow right? Also why wouldn't John Dawson be on campus this weekend if I recall after he commited I thought I read that he hasn't been on campus yet so it seems that this would be the perfect weekend for him to get to know his future place of residence and teammates.
Wonder if he'll sit by DaBari Parker?

Official visits are 48 hours in length. He comes today...leaves on Saturday.
Paint Touches is tweeting that he is close to pulling the trigger to commit. Wow!
This would be *enormous* as he is ranked #32 by Scout...versus #54 for Nunn and #73 for EC Matthews. He would be the highest ranked member of an already stellar class.
If he commits...no Joel Embiid right?

Yes I want to know this also.

I'd imagine Buzz would make room for them.

As much as people would freak out going +2 on scholarships, I'm confident there will be room next season. And no one will be forced out.
If Johnson signs, then we are officially full for next year. If Johnson and Embiid both sign, then we're officially oversigned by 1 for next year. We could do it, but then someone gets voted off the island next year. There are already multiple threads that speculate on what that could mean, but it basically involves someone leaving early, someone paying their own way, a transfer out, or a recruit not coming.
If Otule is granted a 6th year it would complicate things even more.
I love how people are now questioning the possibility of otule not being granted the 6th year. We'd be over signed by 2 of they both came.

Well, I don't know Chris personally, but there is a possibility that he wouldn't want to come back for a 6th year.
A lot can happen this season.
I had no idea that Hunt was from Chicago. He really meant to say Da JaJuan Johnson.
There are numerous possibilities, and I am sure there will be room.

You know, a lot of people go to college for seven years.

The NCAA granted it for Scott Martin at ND, but denied it for Tim Abromaitis, so who knows?

Mbakwe also got the 6th year, but Mbakwe and Martin were both transfers so that may have played into it. If Otule is back for a 6th year, having both Johnson and Embiid would put us 2 over. We haven't filled our full scholarship allotment the past 2 years, so who know what will happen.
If Buzz over-signs by one, I would take that as a precautionary move.
If Buzz over-signs by two, I would take that as an indication that the team already knows who is not returning next year (amongst those expected).
If they knew who would be leaving next year, why wouldn't those people have left already?
They don't specifically know who is leaving next year, but there are a number of possibilities that are fairly obvious.

Spotted MikeHunt buying Rosiak lunch the other day, with Hunt looking as homeless as ever. Probably trying to hit up Rosiak for some material . . .

1. Try to improve their "transfer stock"
2. Try to improve their "draft stock"
3. Maui vacation, chance to play on an aircraft carrier, etc.
4. Backup school of choice doesn't have a scholarship available this year.
Despite popular opinion on the subject, most transfers are mutual decisions between player and coach. This isn't a "you're fired, clean out your desk" type of action... in fact, I have heard that a fair number (something in the neighborhood of 50-67%) of transfer decisions are set in motion before the conference season even starts, but both sides usually stick with each other because the prospects following a mid-year departure typically aren't that great for either side. You still have to sit at least one semester at your new school, and since transfers usually "downgrade" schools, the decision to sit out the additional semester at your new, downgraded school (by waiting out the season) or at your current school (by leaving before the start of the 2nd semester) isn't a difficult one to make for someone leaving a high-major. And since a scholarship isn't going to be filled mid-year, there's no incentive for a coach to cut a transfer-to-be loose until the season is over (unless he's a cancer on the team) just in case he's able to get some contribution or circumstances change.
I think Otule has to get through the season without a signifiant injury to consider coming back.
I do not think Buzz will have to vote someone off. There are a lot of things that could happen including someone having a good enough year to go pro.
Buzz will make room for Embiid, but I suspect that Buzz will not have to worry about this.

I guess it would be helpful to remind some that before handing out schollys to walk-ons who weren't expecting them, MU had two scholarships to hand out this fall. That was after all of this year's scholarships were gone before this spring when MU still ended up landing a transfer (Lockett), so fretting over apparent oversigning is probably wasted time.

Brew, loved your post on the JS site.
Hunt, come on. Is this all we can expect of you?
Credit due to IWB for collecting all 5 errors in one post on his free board ;)

You can't be irritated without first being vigilant.
You did good work Brew. Maybe a bit of embarrasment will get MikeHunt up on his toes just a bit.
Make that 6 errors. Someone caught that Hunt still lists Burton at Brewster despite him being in his second consecutive year at Vincent.

Unlikely. MikeHunt is incapable of feeling embarrassed.
Not that JS will make the change but let's all agree that the best beat writer for the job would be strotty. (Ok kid, don't get a swelled head.)

I don't know why they wouldn't just outsource the blog to Paint Touches. Give MU an annual donation for it that would probably amount to a fraction of the cost of an FTE and everybody wins.
Yes - good call. The Portland-based Oregonian does this with both Oregon/Oregon State athletics and they also have a rivals writer -- Angie Machado -- cover OSU recruiting...

Under McGuire there were always pregame articles talking about the opponent and their best player. That disappear not long after he retired. I always wondered if the paper had better press coverage or was it McGuire pormoting the program by making sure the newspaper got the info. I certainly am not impressed with the Journal Sentainal reporting, but I have a feeling MU does not give them anything to go on.
