Title: John Dawson ESPN Insider article
Post by: MUWarrior4Life on September 28, 2012, 01:18:54 PM
Just wondering if anyone has Insider and able to post article just released today.

Point guard John Dawson (Clovis, N.M./Clovis) is headed across the country to join the Marquette Golden Eagles. Dawson might not be a household name, but he has the game to be a great asset to head coach Buzz Williams' 2013 recruiting class.

"John has really developed as a shooter," Clovis head coach Matt King said of his 6-foot-2, 195-pound combination guard. "He makes good decisions and his No. 1 quality is his versatility. He can play on and off the ball."

Dawson has shown his skills on the travel circuit as well.

Yeah, but he's only rated as 84....so bring back Erik Williams, Jamail Jones & Dameon Mason.

"John has great enthusiasm. He has the ability to make guys want to play with him; he makes teammates better," said Mike Clay, who coaches Dawson's BYC Elite travel team. "He has a great attitude as well. He can really score and make plays off the dribble. He reminds me of a Chauncey Billups type of guard. If he was in a larger metropolitan area, he would be ranked."

Dawson is productive, a good teammate and has great upside, all of which is good news for Williams.

Actually i noticed something about that.  There are only a little over 250 players rated as a 70 or higher by ESPN for the 2014 class, whereas by the end of the year there are more than 1000.

Basically players from the next recruiting class slowly work their way up the ratings unless there is some kind of setback, so your 70s early on are in the upper 80s, etc.

Also bear in mind ESPN completely revamped their rating system a few months back, but did not adjust it accordingly for previous classes. So if you look back, guys like Gardner (88), Derrick Wilson (90), and Ferguson (88) are rated "higher" despite being 2 and 3 star players than guys like Deonte Burton (87) and Duane Wilson (86), both of whom are 4 star, top-60 players.

While Dawson may be a 70 this year, it's likely that in years past, he probably would have been rated in the mid to high 80s.

Sounds like things Buzz loved about Jae when all he saw was a stinker of a game. I have a feeling we got a player who will pleasantly surprise

I appreciate the background on ESPN correcting the inflated ratings it was giving out prior to this year.  But, after what I've read recently regarding Dawson, I consider his ranking of 70 by ESPN as more a measure of ESPN's lack of familiarity with Dawson, than as a valid rating of Dawson as a prospect.
