Title: Buzz Williams mentioned in Gottlieb's ESPN chat
Post by: marqfan22 on July 10, 2007, 12:33:39 PM
Tim (New Orleans): What's your opinion on Buzz Williams leaving UNO for an asst. coach position at Marquette? I wish we could have kept him.

Doug Gottlieb: UNO is a mess....thank goodness Pasternack got the job, he has the energy and the youth to see it through.
Creane and Izzo along with Pitino are THE GUYS when it comes to getting their assistants HC jobs.

Just out of curiosity, why hasn't Dwyane Stephens received consideration as head coach somewhere?  4 years under Crean, 4 more under Izzo--you'd think somebody would have given him a chance by now.

Hmmm...

interesting that somebody from in the industry thinks that.

Not sure if we want to be a program that attracts top coaching talent (only to have it move on quickly) or attract some maybe less talented or less ambitious coaches that want to be assistants for a little while.

My guess is that with the way Crean runs his program (very aggressively and demanding), he attracts top talent and very ambitious coaches and maximizes their skills for a short time rather than getting some less ambitious coaches who may not enjoy the aggressive and demanding nature of the MU program.

I don't know if there is an exact science to this... I guess it's just the way Crean runs his program. Seems to have been working pretty well so far... but I think this upcoming season is going to be very big.
