Jon Rothstein talked with Buzz at an event he was at today and posted Buzz's thoughts on the team on twitter. I've copy and pasted the tweets below.
Good chat with Marquette coach Buzz Williams, whose team will be picked in top half of the Big East again....
Buzz on Jamil Wilson "He's one of the guys we're counting on to be good. He was a big part of our success last season."
Buzz on Vander Blue "This is the year where he's going to be more consistent. He's worked really hard this off season."
Buzz on Junior Cadougan "I've always felt he's been the key to our team. The 2 yrs he's started, we've went to the Sweet 16."
Buzz on Todd Mayo "He can score the ball in a variety of different ways. I've always felt he was a really good player."
Buzz on Trent Lockett "He helps big time. He's a really mature player. He acts like he's 30."
Buzz on Chris Otule "He's doing really well. He should be healthy and ready to go."
Buzz on Juan Anderson "Through 8 individual workouts, he's looked like a good player. He could be in the mix."
Buzz on Davante Gardner "He was our low post guy last season. We could be really big inside w he and Chris Otule together."
Buzz on Steve Taylor "He could be the best high school player we've signed since I've been at Marquette."
Buzz on Marquette's new staff "In some ways, it's good. I've known the guys we've brought in for a long time."
Buzz on Marquette "We've got pretty good players. We don't need any health issues like we had last year. I say health now more than ever."
Buzz on Cincinnati "You always look up on Valentine's Day and they're always in the mix. They'll be in the mix again."
Early prediction on Marquette's starting five --- Junior Cadougan, Vander Blue, Trent Lockett, Jamil Wilson, Davante Gardner.... (My note: not sure if this one is Rothstein's prediction or what Buzz told him)
You can see Rothstein's twitter account here: https://twitter.com/JonRothstein
That's probably Rothstein's prediction on the lineup. I can't imagine Otule doesn't start as long as he's healthy.
Interesting of Buzz to say Steve Taylor could be the best h.s. player he recruited ... given that he also recruited Vander and Junior (and Maymon, too).
Also, agree Otule probably will be in Buzz's starting 5. Not that it really matters, because Otule and Gardner will each play a lot.
Otule will at least be in there for the tip.
Start everyone speculating on Buzz's comment of 'really big inside w he and Chris Otule together'.

Davante can play the 3 now coz of his mad hopz!!!!!
Less than a glowing review of JA wouldn't you say? Not that he's expected to set the world on fire, but that was very reserved

Buzz does nothing without a reason. Maybe he determined that this is how JA repsonds best.

Or he actually doesn't look very good.

His comment about "being big" and Steve Taylor, might actually translate to DeDe and Otule on the floor at the same time (for small stretches).
In the past, you couldn't afford to play them together because MU was too thin. If either player picked up cheap foul(s), MU didn't have a lot of depth.
Now with Otule, Gardner, Wilson, and hopefully Taylor, that gives them 4 guys for 2 spots, which would allow Buzz to mix and match a little more.
Also, Juan and/or Lockett might be able to play #4 for spurts.
With all of this said, Gardner has to prove that he can guard a #4. Offensively he'd be fine, but he's not a great defender away from the hoop to start with. He would be even worse against an active PF.

Another possibility.

Thought it was more of a comment on him coming back from that shoulder surgery.

Not sure what part of Juan looking like a good player, and saying he could be in the mix isn't pretty positive? There is a lot of competition at his position (Jamil, Steve Taylor) - for him to be in the mix is a positive...and overall this roster has a lot of depth/talent - so getting on the floor will be challenging for guys.
Whether he turns out to be the best freshmen remains to be seen. However, he is the best MU freshmen I have seen at the the three years of the pro am.
Of course, the conversation may not have had the flow of the tweets, but I was kinda disappointed in the Lockett/Otule transition, I would have expected ....
Buzz on Trent Lockett "He helps big time. He's a really mature player. He acts like he's 30."
Buzz on Chris Otule "I think he is 30. He's doing really well. He should be healthy and ready to go."

Doesn't this imply "In some ways, it's not so good?"

Well, it's hard to argue that losing an assistant due to false statements during an investigation of even the most minor of violations isn't " not so good".
Cadougan, Blue, Lockett, Wilson & Gardner is one hell of a starting lineup. Mayo, Otule & Taylor off the bench is equally impressive.
Can't wait for this season to get started!
I think Buzz's comments on Steve were probably more a reflection on Steve's performance in HS...which hasn't yet translated to being a "good college player."

I'm going with this interpretation.

I think so. However, referring to losing all three of your assistant coaches in one off season as "In some ways, its good" is not too bad, if you follow me. But not a ringing endorsement.
How "Juan looks like a good player, he's going to be in the mix" gets morphed into "Juan doesn't look that good, he might not be in the mix" is some seriously impressive word parsing artistry.
Just like the parsing gymnastics involved in flip-flopping "In some ways, it's good, I've known these guys for a long time" into "In some ways, it's not so good."
Here's a crazy idea: let's actually take the words uttered from the Buzz' mouth at face value.
