That's the first thing I've seen that gives me any hope, but I'm skeptical that ESPN isn't still looking to expand the ACC and Big 12. The Big 12 argument that a conference title game brings too much risk of knocking one of their teams out of contention doesn't offset how much money ESPN would get out of broadcasting it.
Another factor no one is talking about is how ND influences ACC basketball scheduling. 15 unbalances any planned divisions and potentially messes with Duke and UNC playing twice every year. I still think they want 16.

I agree about the Big 12 argument. A very large reason the BIG expanded was to have a conference game. It brings in a lot of money. The Big 12 may swear up and down that they are happy with ten, but for how long? Within the next couple of years, they have to look at getting to a conference championship game.
I said it this morning, and (on the heels of Wetzel claiming it's a good day for the BE) I'll say it again:
ND's departure is not a huge loss. It's not a big loss. MU and the BE might even be better off without them.
I will happily go toe to toe with anyone on this. Throw your stats at me... blast me with rumors... bombard me with anecdotes from a father's, brother's, nephew's former college roommate who works for DirecTV about how the Big 12/ACC/B? still have their poaching gear on.
Bring - it - on. I will stubbornly and summarily reject what you have to say and stand firm as an optimist here (someone has to).
doesnt that article just say that its better to have been executed than sitting on death row? if ND wasn't a big loss, then no loss would have been at this point.
I agree this article make more sense then Groin_Pull's hysterical rants today.
And I also think this article suggests that UConn/Rutgers/Louisville/USF/Cincy are the big losers. They would love to jump to the ACC/B10/B12 but they are not coming a calling for several years, if ever. If they jump to another FB conference, then their basketball programs are toast. They are stuck in the BE for the time being, maybe many years. Fine by me as they make it a great Bball conference even thought they are grumbling that it is a second rate FB conference.

It brings in a lot of money? Really? What, 5 million a year? How much would adding two more schools drain off from the distribution to the other ten schools? More than your extra 5 million or whatever. Significantly more. The Big 12 is staying at 10 teams unless they can poach a couple of big name programs. With the ACC's new 50 million exit fee that's just not going to happen.
I'm not totally in agreement that Notre Dame's leaving will have no effect. In fact, I'm going to miss them if for no other reason than some of the best games we ever had in Milwaukee were against them. The Al and Digger shows were a hoot, especially when Al won. Glenn Rivers' defining moment as a Warrior was against Notre Dame.
That said, this is not the Hiroshima moment everyone is afraid of, either. Sure, we've lost charter Big East members in Syracuse, Pitt, West Virginia and now add-on Notre Dame. But we're still a darn good basketball conference and with Memphis coming in, I can't help but think we're better off. Notre Dame has a bigger name, but Memphis is usually a Top 25 basketball school with a history and reasonably good connection to Marquette.
As long as we're aligned with Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's and, likely, Louisville and Cincinnati, we're OK. I can't help but believe that such schools as Temple, Dayton and Butler if they had the chance would join us too. Butler certainly has proven its mettle in the past few years and I just like playing Dayton as a historical reminder of who we are. Temple and Coach Cheney is a valuable basketball property.
Yes, none of these teams has the "name" of Notre Dame, but they fit what we're doing well.
isn't Temple already slated to joining the BEast?
getting old and forgetful
Temple is joining the BE for football this year. Rest of the sports in 2013.

I think not having a championship can have a negative effect on recruiting. Not for a teams like Iowa St and Kansas, who would not be likely to play in one anyways. However, for the power houses it can be a bad thing recruiting wise. I would think a player good enough to play for Alabama or LSU would picked them for sure over Oklahoma, because there is a chance to play in a conference championship game. Not having one will eventually weaken the Big 12's talent pool and thus negatively effect their national competiveness. so I would expect the Big 12 to expand in the next couple of years.
