Title: UMASS
Post by: Clarence on September 12, 2012, 03:00:34 PM
Big East is now at 17 for BBall and 13 for football following Notre Dame's departure.

We need to add another team.....quickly.

My vote is for UMASS, they are joining the MAC in football next sesason and have a very legitimate Bball resume.

The other options are all less desirable: BYU? Army? East Carolina? Rice? Marshall?

I fail to see how UMass would be better than BYU. BYU expands markets, helps balance football east and west, and has a much better team in both sports that matter.

Provo is a really long way to send the Providence women's volleyball team

The Big East doesn't need to add anyone.  After ND leaves:

10 "all sports members"  (USF, UCF, Lou, Cin, Temple, Mem, SMU, Hou, Rut, Uconn)
7 "non-football members" (MU, DeP, St.J, Prov, SHU, Geo, Nova)
3 "football only members" (Navy, SDSU, Boise)

IOW, "one big clusterf*ck."

Wonderful collection of natural rivals there.

If they add anyone, make it BYU, AFA, Army, or some other football-only school so they can have 14.  Having 18 instead of 17 does nothing for basketball but dilute quality even further.  Of the five new basketball schools we're already adding three garbage basketball programs, don't add a fourth.

BYU would be a very good basketball program. I suspect the only chance of getting BYU would be if they also joined for basketball.

And Houston, Orlando, and Milwaukee aren't? The geographic argument for this conference were seriously dented when USF, DePaul, and Marquette came in, and obliterated with the Texas schools.

I don't see how another school in a current, stable conference would want to leave for the Big East.

BYU is fine where they are.

Boise State and TCU were reaches.

Stick to your geographic region, folks.

BYU would be solid as football only but a mistake for hoops. Besides, they have a good hoops spot now with Gonzaga and St. Mary's. Perfect for them.  I bet the new commish's statement about a 14th member a few weeks ago was about BYU and no one else.
