Actually, I think he is friends with Buzz. I think he mentioned that in an NCAA Tourney press conference when they mentioned how MU is like a football team.

Buzz and Gruden talk a few times each week. Very good friends, Buzz said in Phoenix.

I actually like Gruden as an analyst, but he is repetitive and needs to expand his repertoire.

Without Jaws in the booth this year, maybe Gruden will evolve a little bit.

He needs to play less of a "character" and do more just calling what he sees.

Personally, I think he is awful.  His insight is all personal stories, and he goes off on pointless name dropping tangents way too often.

He needs to watch some of Troy Aikmen's work.

I can't disagree. I like Aikmen far better, and Gruden is never going to play it that straight. But, if Gruden can play less of the "Gruden character" and just call what he sees, I think he could be pretty good.

Also, I don't mind his personality and like some of his stories. Just needs to turn it down a little bit.

Jaws was the straight man in the act last year, so without him, maybe Chucky will play it a little more straight.

Gruden commentates like he plans on coaching soon. He seems to not want to offend anyone in case he may have to coach that player in the future. Every player seems like a star in the league and then he hones in on a few each game that are going to be Hall of Famers. Although, he seems to be going more towards the long-term broadcaster path rather than it just being something to do between coaching jobs. ESPN thinks very highly of him it sounds like. Maybe he will be more critical if he plans on being in the booth long-term.

Let's not forget Herm Edwards:

I'd guess Buzz talks to anyone who has a working ear (and I would further guess that could include former tanned coaches).
