Title: Meanwhile, back at the gym
Post by: UticaBusBarn on July 21, 2012, 01:39:56 PM
Two interesting articles were posted earlier today that have nothing to do with JS basketball coverage, much less made-up stories on recruits, or the general bashing of people trying to do a good job.

One is at http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/ entitled "The End of the Traditional Position." The other is at www.hardwoodparoxysm.com entitled "The Talents of Jay Crowder."

The first article, which addresses the evolution of the NBA game, sounds as though it was written by Coach Williams with the exception that the word "switchables" does not appear. The article says, size does not count, and that the traditional post player may well be a thing of the past.

The article on Jae Crowder revolves around the thesis of how defense sets up the offense, and Crowder's success to date being based on his ability to execute using the approach of basketball begins with defense. Does the theory of defense setting-up and creating offense sound familiar?

Coach Williams, certainly has his flaws and has made errors. However, this gentleman, who is still in only in his late 30's, has proven to be a visionary coach in his approach to the game of basketball.

Said another way, Coach Williams is way ahead of the curve ... or, is it the ball?

Amazing how much Jae has improved defensively in 2 years.  When he came to MU, he was a poor defender.  With hard work, he has really improved as his senior season was a revelation compared to his first year at MU.

I really like Buzz, but honestly people have been talking about the end of traditional basketball positions for awhile now.

He really has and I hope others take notice.  Defense is all about two things, Effort and instincts, all the rest (i.e. athleticism) is just a bonus.  Jae has unbelievable instincts and he matches that with equal effort.  Anyone though can be a defensive star if they just put the effort in and focus.
