Since you're here....how has Pastner's coaching been thus far? Do you like his style? what O do you run?, etc.
Seems you guys have slightly underperformed considering the talent level and weak conference play (setting up for high seed, etc.)

Good questions.
Coach Pastner is a good coach....with the qualities to become a outstanding one before he retires.
Thus far, he is the anti-Calipari. When Josh's teams win, we don't feel the need to constantly shower. He makes the program all about the players and asst coaches, rather than himself.
He still needs some seasoning. He's growing as a coach, and experiencing the growing pains associated with that.
Some of this is attributed to his 'aw shucks golly gee' persona. He doesn't cuss players out. In a game against Louisville last year (televised no less) his wired mic brought a ton of chagrin from Memphis fans as he was getting onto freshman Adonis Thomas.
"Adonis, I love you, but you're killing me."
As the season progressed, he showed a greater effort to light into players when they made mistakes...so I think the lightbulb has gone on in that aspect of his coaching.
As far as what Pastner runs...he runs Lute Olson's old 1-4 Arizona stack offense. Its a bit similar to what Calipari ran at Memphis (the DDM, which has never been run at UK yet...despite what THEY think)
This is Pastner's make or break season in my personal opinion. CUSA shouldn't be too tough...and he HAS to win a NCAA tournament game. Also, he has to beat a top 25 team. His team is now comprised of juniors and seniors...with a outstanding wide bodied freshman (Shaq Goodwin)..and if he doesn't beat a top 25 team this year...or make it past the first round of the NCAA tournament...recruiting will start to suffer greatly. (I suspect it is already dipping).
His recruiting has been decent as of late....but right now...he has Calipari, Donovan, and Thompson all coming into our city after our high school kids...so he has to step up big time.
great post 'misfit', and welcome. I was sorely disappointed when Pastner went to Memphis as I held out hope that he would come join Buzz here. Obviously his choice proved better for his situation. Should be fun in the BEast together.
One more thing to note, is the addition of Coach Jimmy Williams to the Memphis staff.
Last year, Coach Pastner hired Luke Walton of the Lakers to be a assistant coach, knowing that if the NBA lockout ended, he was taking a risk of losing him.
Overall, I think that was the unwisest move he has made as head coach. Memphis had the talent to pound the ball inside...and yet our big men seemed to have butter fingers whenever the ball was passed to them. During the season, Coach Pastner hired Coach Williams to work with the big men....and Tarik Black and Farakhan Hall's play improved dramatically. We're expecting big things from them this year, along with newcomer Shaq Goodwin.

No, I didn't. Oops. I stopped at the Opus avatar.....
I am convinced that the loss to Kansas State in the scrimmage. (IT was common knowledge that we lost plus it was a home game) cost us a seed line in the tournament. We probably would have been a 5 seed but instead we got a 6 seed and shipped west. With all things equal I am confident that the loss to KSU was a huge tiebreaker
Let go of this delusion. Beating VA didn't help our seed line. Not having anyone who could stop Michael Beasley did not hurt our seed line.
Surprised Crean never doubled down on Beasley that game.
I heard there have been members of the Selection Committee at the Pro-Am.

Nah, he was too self-absorbed riding an ATV in his hyperbaric chamber while practicin' karate.

No buddy in the media knew about us beating UVA. The media new right away that KSU beat us by 35

Oh, well its probably best that you follow Memphis and not Marquette then.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist. :)
Are you here to find out about the auctions on the Dominic James and Dwight Buycks Jerseys?
Okay, I'm really gonna stop now.

But 'nobody' in the media cared about a pre-season scrimmage. And 'nobody' on the selection committee cared, either. The scenario you envision goes something like this; "Hey, regarding Marquette, I seem to remember hearing some third hand information about a pre-season closed door scrimmage back in October where Beasley went off and beat them up by 35 or something. Yeah, lets drop them one spot." To my knowledge, there has never been a scintilla of evidence that the selection committee takes preseason closed door scrimmages into their condideration.

How did they manage that when they're not allowed to keep score?
We need more teal in this topic!

Not exactly this is how it happened.
"Geez I cant the Resume for Marquette and Big State look really really similar."
"Yea they do, I wonder a way we can filter this out a little better"
"Well I was told that Marquette lost to 12 seed in this tournament"
"Really? I dont see it"
"it was a scrimmage in the preseason where Kansas State beat MU by 35 points at Marquette"
"Really? How did the other team we are considering for this seed do in it's closed door scrimmage"
"I dont know the score was never posted"
"Looks like we can drop Marquette, considering we have nothing else to go on. So it is settled we will send Marquette to Anaheim and The other team to Chicago"
My boy on the inside for that scrimmage said Bill Walker was making Trend look silly.

And then the committee spontaneously sprouted wings and flew off to form a colony on Mars.
(Hey, as long as we are dealing in fantasy here....)

I heard that the committee actually reviews slam dunk contests from various midnight madness' as a tie breaker for seeds.
That's why MU never got in the tourny when Polo was winning the dunk contest.
I agree with Kenosha. I consider Crean's loss to Kansas State one of his top 10 worst defeats at MU, considering margin.
