Generally not a huge fan of bringing up Crean, but I did think this was interesting...
QuoteMore than 10 years ago, when Crean was at Marquette, a prospect informed the coach that he would be signing elsewhere because he wanted to learn from someone "who had actually played the game."
Crean's on-court career didn't extend past high school.
"I took it as a slight," Crean said. "It motivated me. I told him, 'You do what you want, but when we play you, make sure you pay attention to the double-teams we put in place to keep you from scoring.'
"The kid redshirted his first year and hardly played the year after that. He eventually became a decent player, but we won a lot more against his team than we lost. I think I made my point."
Wonder who it is?
Also a Scott Christopherson quote wrapping up the article.

Did Bo play in college?
From wikipedia:
"Ryan starred as a point guard at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania."
But of course, starred doesn't mean played. Frozena frequently starred as a point guard, but rarely played.
favorite part:
Williams said his lack of playing experience hasn't been a factor with his players. If anything, his trek to the Division I ranks helps him relate to the Golden Eagles, many of whom are former junior college stars who had to work extra hard after being overlooked in high school.

Marquette mentions: Buzz, Crean, Majerus, Christopherson.
FOUR!!!
I thought Butch originally as well, but (correct me if I'm wrong)... we went 2-3 against UW in Butch's 5 years.

Can't be Butch, then -- Crean would never rewrite history to paint himself in a better light

For him to feel slighted by a high school boy tells you all you need to know about Crean. He's an insecure little twirp. I recall when GameDay was here and he was baited into shooting during the Bilas walk through and refused. Even in good fun. I am astounded that anybody would want to play for him.
I don't trust a coach who doesn't golf, either. Claims he doesn't because he's too busy "working." The truth? He's embarrassed that he's so uncoordinated and he's too socially inept to carry conversation about anything other than leadership books and his deep friendship with Tony LaRussa.

Get off it, why would he not feel slighted when a recruit says that? If somebody would tell that to Buzz do you think he should be happy about it?
Quite frankly I am glad both our coaches present and former are doing so well.

I doubt it is Butch....that doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm trying to think back to his early years at MU when he was coaching in CUSA. Did he lose out on a recruit to Huggins at Cincy? Lorenzo Romar at SLU?

You're prob. right, but I can't think back on another guy MU lost out on that ended up redshirting at another school.
However, it could have been in year 1 or 2 of Crean's tenure, and it might have been a high school Soph... somebody MU wasn't publicly recruiting.

For that matter, did Al golf?
I know he liked to ride his motorcycle, but I don't remember reading about him golfing as a hobby.

I don't think he played, but I have heard a couple stories about him walking the course with his grandson and looking for lost golf balls and randomly chatting up members on the course.

Jerry Tarkanian always said that he would never hire an assistant coach who owned a set of golf clubs.

More interesting to me is the claim from Buzz that he was good enough to play at one of the 'bible colleges.' That indicates a fair amount of game and a keen grasp of fundamentals when he was a young man.

For sh*ts and giggles, I just looked up Maranantha Baptist College of Watertown's roster. It includes a freshman from Lodi who scored 4.0 ppg as a senior.
I don't think it takes all that much game to play for these types of schools.

Damn. I should have gone to a 'bible college.'

My roommate for three of my four years at Marquette played several years of varsity basketball at a large public school in the Houston area. He was a very good basketball player who [more than] held his own in pick-up games at the rec (including against the player pictured in your avatar -- which seemed to irritate that particular player). I doubt he could have walked on at MU (although I'm not sure it would have been out of the question), but he absolutely could have played at one of the "bible colleges" around Texas. During Christmas break one year when I was with him in Houston we went to watch one of his former teammates play for University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and he clearly could have played at a school of that caliber. He loved playing basketball, but when it came time to go to college, he decided to move on to something new.
Crean couldn't break 120 at frisbee golf.
A former player once told me that Crean was suspect, because he never played the game.

He learned basketball like he learned people skills and leadership....from books.

many others have.

Wasn't there a Buzz counter on MUScoop? Did the Admins take it down or is it still active?
