Now that Lockett has commited, what do we do with the last schollie?
First, never bank a schollie. Look what happened in the last few weeks, two spots opened up. Spots always open up so get bodies! Worry about open spots later.
So who is left? How about Jameel McKay? First team Juco AA from Milwaukee. 6'8" PF. He can play this fall (correct?). IU is all over him. If Buzz can rope him in, this is a nobrainer.
Thoughts?
Be great option. With Jones leaving, I'd like some bulk for the #4. Neither Chris nor DG would seem to be able to play that spot effectively. Love to hear names folks come up with.
Hate to bank that last, but unless McKay come onboard, there is just a boatload of talent in the 2013 class. Buzz has extended offers to numerous of these 2013 recruits and with the 2012-2013 roster looking well rounded out ( and if it stays that way), it is tough decision.

McKay is a 2013 recruit and more of a combo forward. Not sure how much of a priority he is right now.

Agree. I'm usually of the opinion that banking a scholarship is essentially self-imposing a penalty on your program for your own recruiting failures. But as far as this last spot, you've got to find a really good fit or it's not going to be worth even bringing in the body when the 2013 talent out there - we might want the flexibility to sign in the fall.
McKay is 2013 he's not an option for the last spot. Bank it and use it on Jake Thomas again this year.
Here are the options....
**A HS 2012...I don't know if I have heard our name mentioned with any additional '12 players at this point.
**A JUCO transfer. These seem to come out of nowhere so who knows, but again, I haven't heard anything.
**A "regular" transfer. Unless it is a graduating senior that can play right away, and again I have not heard our name with any of those, tying up a scholarship on the likes of Uthoff doesn't make a lot of sense to me. (And the only way I take a senior like Lockett is if he has some size.)
So unless we have additional departures, I think we are going to be going into next year with one vacancy.
Buzz has never banked.
Usually takes a late flier with a high likelihood of being a future transfer (Mbao, Roseboro). Gardner was the one that has produced.

I'm fine with this over a high-transfer flier on a 2012 senior.

He just banked last year and used it on a walk-on...
Former Wisconsin forward Jarrod Uthoff told SNY.tv Friday he "may visit" Florida and Marquette, but has no dates set as of yet.
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native just visited Iowa State this week and has also visited Creighton.
I'm certain he'll use it and that's not factoring Chernobyl in.

Banking the schollie is penalizing the team. It's a bad thing to bank schollies.
He can give it to Thomas in September. Until then he should be exploring all possibilites.

Didn't they bank one last year?

I disagree with that.

I disagree with that.
How much production does one get out of an unused schollie?
Yes, we had one unused schollie last year because Ewill transferred after finals.
Buzz is hard at work. If there is someone worth adding, he'll be added.
It's flippin early May. Tons of time. The only decision to be made is whether to continue to recruit or to stop. You continue. Always.
Piss off Badger fans more by getting Uthoff

And of course Buzz is continuing to recruit the 2012 class, and if he feels someone is worth adding then he will do it. But you don't use a scholarship just to use it. If there's a significantly better option for 2013, you risk losing him because you felt you had to fill a 2012 schollie. It's not about production. It's about what you lose in future years just by taking someone to fill it.
Strotty:
You wrote

Williams also has one more scholarship for 2012, but may bank it to use on the loaded 2013 class. Sophomore walk-on Jake Thomas may see minutes, which would give Williams more freedom in using or not using the last scholarship.
What you suggest is Buzz has already decided he is done looking to fill that last schollie spot. That would be a big mistake. He should keep looking until classes start in the fall. So, Strotty, is Buzz still looking or not?
Now I understand that he may find no one, and you could argue he had Durley but threw him back. In that case it goes unused but having unused schollies is never a good thing.
I'd like Buzz to continue to recruit BOTH 2012 and 2013. If he can get a 4-star verbal from a '13, I'd be more than happy to allow the scholly to go to Jake again next year in the interim.
I said he "may" bank it for 2013, not that he has decided to do so. They're definitely still looking at '12.
Then you should have said that ... "Buzz continues to recruit for 2012 but may bank it."
The way you wrote it left the reader (me) with the impression that Buzz gave up on another 2012 player and failed again to recruit a full roster for the upcoming season.
Another thought ... didn't Buzz land Jamil Wilson in late June? So, their is precedent that a decent player can be found this summer.

IMO, the reader (you) might be the only one who read it that way ;)
Banking a scholarship is not always a bad thing. If there's a player who Buzz thinks can be a difference-maker or even just a contributor for the next 2-4 years then obviously use it. If Buzz has 3 open schollies for next season and 9 stud HS players interested, he should hold on to it. It's low risk, high reward. "Worst-case" scenario, Jake gets a scholarship.
Whether Marquette and Buzz take another transfer remains to be seen. This is either finals week or the week before finals for a majority of the schools around the country and there will be a ton of transfer destinations announced once the players complete finals and receive their grades and are determined to be eligible at their next destinations.
BIG TIME 2013 COMING UP. NICE TO HAVE AN EXTRA SCHOLLIE. ALTHOUGH
MC KAY WOULD BE A NICE FIT IF ELIGIBLE FOR 2012. I WOULD SAVE FOR 2013.

Might want to cut strotty some slack. He's by far and away the best beat writer on the Marquette assignment.
In all honesty, I'd be very, very surprised if Jake got our last 2012 scholarship. The reason Buzz could afford to give him a scholarship last year was because he had 2 available. But I imagine he would want to keep at least one open in case there's a mid-season transfer that is available come January. Sure, they wouldn't be eligible to play until next year, but you still want the flexibility to add that type of guy. Unless he's filling it with a new player, I think it remains open.

Exactly. Completely agree.
