Title: ND's Tim Abromaitis denied 6th year
Post by: Norm on May 01, 2012, 04:10:22 PM
So, the NCAA denied ND's Tim Abromaitis' appeal for a 6th year following an injury that wiped out what would have been his 5th year last year.

Otule played in more games this year than Abromaitis did for ND.

Any one know how good a case MU has for the NCAA granting Otule his 6th year?

I had heard a few weeks back he was being denied, though I believe the thought was that having requests in for 6th years for two players at the same time was tough.

EVeryone has seemed confident in Otule's case, but I do not know what makes for a strong case.

In any event, Notre Dame is still loaded but losing Abromaitis drops them to 13th in my rankings for next season.

Pulled this from the Chicago Tribune article:

"The hitch was that 2008-09 campaign in which Abromaitis sat out to preserve a year of eligibility, not for any injury reasons -- and the NCAA typically grants sixth years to players who have missed two full seasons due to injury or other non-competition-related issues."

So the difference is that Otule missed significant portions of two seasons due to injury, whereas Abromitis missed only one due to injury while the only was a simple redshirt.

Yeah, unfortunate that Tim isn't allowed to play a decade of basketball.

OK, that makes sense, and would seem Otule has a better case than Abromaitis did.

Yeah, and it seems like ND knew it would be a long-shot.  Buzz has been talking about Otule like it is a certainty.

Otule's circumstances are about as straightforward as they come.. he should be fine.

Then again, the NCAA does some crazy things at times.. like awarding a sixth year to a guy for being found guilty of a felony assault.  You just never know until a guy hits the court if they are going to play.

Did the NCAA grant Mbakwe a 6Th year? I think the Big 10 did, so there was no reason to appeal it to the NCAA. The question would be whether the NCAA would have granted it, if the Big 10 did not? I think what adds even more to Otule's case is the fact he could of redshirted his freshmen year due to injury and did not. He has had three years shorten by injury.

The NCAA did, not the Big Ten conference.  The conference has no jurisdiction in such a matter.

Requests for a waiver of the Five-Year Rule goes to the NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement.

You may be getting things confused with a hardship waiver, which are generally granted by the conference.

Thanks jaybee. I had thought that the conference had the final say but apparently I misread something.

I still can't believe that Brey had the stones to try this after Abro got suspended over a violation of eligibility rules.

Probably smoke and mirrors, hoping that while they looked at the Abro claim, they wouldn't notice him sneaking Scott Martin in through the back door.

Based on precedents, Otule will get Year 6 if he and Marquette both want it. As stated by many, Abro case had entirely different perameters.

Considering he already has his master's, a doctorate isn't out of the question.   Heck, if I knew I was damn good at baskeball and smart as a whip, I'd fast track my bachelors online before I turned 20 and try to be the only person ever to go through med school on a basketball scholarship.  When you have a coupon for a free dinner, you might as well order the truffle-encrusted lobster.
