Loved the conversation that took over in another thread, so I thought I would start one designated for it because I am having trouble remembering which basketball thread has which side discussion going on. I have seen the BoDeans more than a dozen times. Loved their summerfest shows, especially '90 when they played the Old Style (IIRC) stage at night and then did another show at noon the next day that featured their B-sides plus some one of their songs with Robbie Robertson. Saw them play Pabst theater while taking a break from opening for U2's Joshua Tree tour. Violent Femmes side project (Mercy Seat?) opened for them.
I remember the night that one of the Femmes (Gano?) came down and played an acoustic set in the Mugrack. Also saw Chris Farley try to do stand up at the Mugrack. Tracy Chapman opening for 10,000 Maniacs. Went and saw REM in Madison. Trying to explain Summerfest to those who haven't gone is always fun.
South End Blues Band. Playing Summerfest on July 1, noon on the Harley stage. Older? How about Sam McCue and The Legends or The Shag?
My formative years music wise were in the 70's
too many summerfest shows to ever recall them all but the ones that ended up as rainouts seem easier to remember. IIRC, I saw the Allman Bros. get rained out twice, the 1st time after Enlightened Rogues probably in 1979, the Dixie Dregs opened but unfortunately after maybe only 4-5 songs into the ABB set, the sky opened up and the show was canceled
another time it was Marshal Tucker and Charlie Daniels that was cut short by rain, still remember the drunks doing belly flops off the bleachers into puddles
1986, INXS's set was cut due to another storm, they closed the grounds and kicked everyone out even though it was still daylight and the rain stopped while we were still in the traffic jam getting out, we ended up at Good Time Charlies after taking our driver to the hospital after he cut his hand open breaking the car window of the person that side-swiped his car and drove off; this night was also memorable as I ws moving to North Carolina the next day
who can forget how big Huey Lewis and the News was back in their time, their show headlining the Main stage was unbelievably packed, especially looking back now at whata flash in the pan they were
best show I remember was when the Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for SRV, I sat in line from 11AM waiting for the Main stage to open, those from that time will know that this was at the old Main stage that was entirely first come first served seating so I sat in line outside the Main stage while Phil Donahue broadcast his show on the stage next door, for some reason, I remember he featured Elvis impersonators that day, anyway, I ended up in 2nd row with about a dozen friends and will always remember Jimmy Vaughn and SRV playing the same double neck guitar for SRV's encore - now that's a reach-around!
I was at that INXS show that got rained out. The Elvis Brothers opened and played their set with their stand-up drummer Brad Elvis (he is now a member of the Romantics). Then between acts the storm hit and the grounds started flooding. INXS never took the stage, then they closed the grounds, must've been around 8:30. I remember seeing drunks belly-flopping from picnic tables into puddles, and walking through the water barefoot and shirtless.
I was at the Huey Lewis show there too, when they set an attendance record at the old Main Stage. I think they had over 30,000 people jammed into that show. That led to the plans for the Marcus Ampitheater. Definitely not the same atmosphere.

You've been at this long enough to know that no 'Scoop thread ever stays on topic. We had a nice thing going over there, and you just killed it. How long before this thread devolves into yet another [fill in your "favorite" 'Scoop topic] pissing match?
I saw a few of the shows put on at County Stadium as well, Pink Floyd's infamous rain show in 1975, the exploding pig show in 1977 and then the Waters-less line-up in 1987
the Grand Slam Jam (no it was NOT sponsored by Denny's) with Nugent, Cheap Trick, Heart & Journey; another show with Jefferson Starship, Foreigner, Nazareth and Bob Welch
as far as Alpine Valley besides big acts like the Grateful Deadi n '85 and Springsteen in '84, I was fortunate in the early-mid 80's that a buddy of mine was the Saturday afternoon DJ on WMSE and didn't have a car so anytime he had ticket giveaways he'd call me to let me know I was his 4th caller, Bow Wow Wow, the English Beat among many others
as far as riots at concerts, unfortunately I was ata few of those but I swear I didn't start them: 1976(?) Judas Priest at the Rock stage, the New Barbarians in 1979 and then the BOC/Black Sabbath riot in 1980 which was taped by a friend whose story is here: http://www.derekerdman.com/ilovemilkshakes/november2006/RIOT/black_sabbath_riot_ok.htm

Lighten up Francis.
Anyhoo, my friends and I sat on in the Main Stage all day long for the Huey Lewis show. It was incredible. It was the largest crowd they had ever played for. I will never forget giving us his famous "looking over the sunglasses" look, except that his facial expression was "Holy Crap! Look how many people came out to see us!"
They played a couple of extra encores - they were just improvising at the end.
Widespread Panic at Summerfest in 1997 is one of the best shows I've ever seen live. Great show, absolutely incredible vibe.

That Huey Lewis show was booked when they weren't that big, but then they released "Sports" and it just exploded. I think at the show Huey announced that the album had just gone platinum or hit #1 or something. I also remember him amazed at how big the crowd was.
I worked at Summerfest in crowd control from 1979-1983 so I was there every night, usually at the main stage. We saw everything from Kool & the Gang, Jackson Browne, Journey (was so loud that my ears were ringing the next day), Rick Springfield (LOTS of girls at that one), the GoGo's, George Thorogood, Steve Miller Band, the Stray Cats (went backstage for that one...my friend played catch before the show with Brian Setzer who threw like a girl).
Man, if I had a dollar for every show that made my ears ring the next day...thanks to such stupidity my ears are still ringing!

How about the World Series of Rock at County Stadium in around 1981-82 maybe? The first year they had REO Speedwagon, the Outlaws, Triumph and Blackfoot and the second year they had Foreigner, Loverboy, .38 Special and Quarterflash, I think. May have mixed some of that up.
I was also at the Who show the Rock 'N roll animal forced into stopping here and yes of course Entwistle was with them then and for many years to come
I didn't attend MU so missed most of the shows associated with MU but did take advantage of all the shows subsidized by ZMF, QFM and LPX. I recall seeing the bands UK, Billy Squier, April Wine, RamJam (Black Betty lol), Trooper, Angel, Triumph, Graham Parker, the Godz, Yesterday & Today(later renamed Y&T) and others at the Uptown or Riverside for anywhere from 98 cents to $2.98. The mens room at the Uptown was frickin' wild at intermissions, if you were there you know what I mean.
The Riverside prior to it's remodeling was a great cheap venue for shows, my first show there was Rush in 1977 touring for the All the world's a stage LP.
God bless Randy McElrath's Stardate productions, I had stood in line freezing for tickets (remember those times?) for a YES show that was to take place on the Summerfest grounds, not during Summerfest, in 1977 (Going for the one tour) and they moved the show to the Auditorium or Arena for some reason and didn't really announce a ticket exchange so when we found out we had to trade in our tickets we got crap seats. I called Stardate to complain because we ended up with nosebleeds, Peggy McElrath told me anytime I wanted tickets in the future to send in a mail order before tickets went on sale so when Rush/Pat Travers was announced for January 1978, myself and 24 high school friends pooled $ and I got 25 seats/3 rows front and center. Even though there was an incredible blizzard all of us made it there.
I ended up with front row seats for alot of shows that way, future Rush shows(loved them in my HS days), Zappa, Ozzie's Black Sabbath/Van Halen, Cheap Trick, UFO/Judas Priest, Molly Hatchet/the Outlaws, Rossington Collins band, Yes in the round, Supertramp, Head East Bad Company. I made a deal with my brother that I'd get the seats and he'd make copies for me of the pics he'd take with his 35mm like this one from Rush in December 1978
Reminds me .. I think it was 1990 summerfest .. my roommate and I went to the Depeche Mode concert .. after, we hopped the bus back to campus. In the crush of humanity trying to get on buses, we didn't notice we hadn't gotten on the one that goes up Wisconsin Avenue .. we got on a freeway flyer. Goodbye MU campus .. bye bye Wauwatosa .. I think we ended up in Waukesha or further out with 15 other drunkards who also got on the wrong bus.
The bus lady turns around and wonders why we're still on the bus as she tells us "last stop." As we make the long, dark return trip to downtown, we ask her if she could just exit on Wisconsin ave, and drop us off. She radios in for guidance: rejected. A few of us start openly talking about hijacking the bus but none of us were drunk enough to do so, and our journey ended .. back at Summerfest. FFFFF****
That reminds me of the time we hit Summerfest on July 3rd, the night of the big fireworks (around 1982). There were so many people at the lakefront, traffic was at a standstill. I was with a few UWM friends so we decided to go to Judge's on North Ave; one had a car parked in a Summerfest lot. When we saw how backed up the whole traffic situation was, we decided to walk from the south end of Summerfest to Judges. I don't know how far that is, but we beat the guy with the car by about a half hour!

Bodean's update - I bought tickets over the weekend to see the Bodeans at a Connecticut theater located way out in the sticks. Well that stinks. Half is still better than none.
I think I'm a bit younger than some here (born in 1977), but I remember my sister introducing me to the Femmes in the early 1980s with "Old Mother Reagan". Saw them a few times once I was old enough to go to concerts, out in Waukesha, down at the Maritime Days, and at Summerfest (probably others too). Those were all 1990s, though.
Anyone here remember Citizen King? Seemed primed to be the next big group from Milwaukee in the mid-1990s. They announced at a Summerfest free show that they had been signed by a major label, which brought cheers from the audience, though ultimately was the band's downfall. I think they started with Epic, though that fell through. They were optioned to another label, then finally landed with Warner Brothers, who put their major label album out, albeit 3 years later than initially expected. By that time, bands like Smash Mouth, 311, and Sublime found commercial success with a style very similar to CK's, and by the time their album was released in 1999, it sounded like a rip-off of those bands. It's a shame, I really think they could have hit it huge if their album had come out in 1996 when that sound was blowing up.

"service" fees are getting outrageous. If I worked for a band (they'd have to be a sellout the arena kind of band) I'd sell tickets to the show only on my website. It seems like Ticketmaster is adding $25 on to a $40 show.

Unfortunately, TIcketmaster has a stranglehold on the market. I believe their deals are with the venues, not necessarily the bands. A few big acts have had some well-publicized attempts to circumvent Ticketmaster, to no avail. I have never heard anyone try to bring an anti-trust lawsuit against them, which surprises me. Ticketmaster is a monopoly that is ripe for some liberal judge to break up.

That's what I mean. It's about $40 for the concert + $16 for entrance to the grounds (included in your concert ticket) + the $25 or whatever for Ticketmaster that gets you to the $80 that you are paying.
I was so disappointed with the bands playing in the amphitheater this year until I saw all the free stages. This is one of the best years I can remember the problem is having to make the trek down there so many times.
The side stages are always the place to be IMO. You can come and go as you please, you can get as close up as you want (or don't want), and they are almost always right on schedule. You can hop between stages if you want to see simultaneous bands. And if the show is not that great, you're not committed to it. I rarely go to the Amp during the Fest.

They (ok, Kurt) played in town two weeks after Sammy left the band. You could tell Kurt was hurting and finding his way. Plus, a Bodeans show without 'Still the Night' just feels wrong. However, the backing band is solid and Kurt still has some gas left in the tank. Plus, he did 'Tied down and Chained', which has always been one of my favorite obscure tracks that I had never seen live.

I still have high hopes it'll be a great show for a reason.
It sounds a lot like another favorite band of mine,
NRBQ. (They're a Northeast version of the Bodeans, but they go much farther back to the early 70's. They also have the distinction of being the first band to appear as themselves on The Simpson's, or something like that.) The lead guitarist, co-song writer, & co-lead singer left the band in the mid-90's to produce country music acts in Nashville. The replaced him with the bassist's brother. They were still great in concert. I still aLWAYS caught their traditional day after Thanksgivng show at Toad's Place in New Haven.
Kurt Neumann's BoDeans are playing Summerfest this year (July 4th at the Potawotami Stage). It's the smallest stage on the grounds but I bet that will be a great crowd. We'll see how they are after having a year to reformulate.
As for Summerest in general, the fun has never worn off for me, and I'm 50. As a music lover of many genres, I try to go every night. I admit, though, that it did lose a dimension after I got married because it's the biggest singles bar on the planet.

I've only been to a couple non-Summerfest festivals, but I kind of like the other festivals in comparison due to this. Summerfest is very overcrowded and more or less a large drinking fest. Fun when I was in college, not so much now.
Summerfest can get overcrowded, but the ongoing changes they have made to the configurations of the stages over the past few years really improve the traffic flow. They also stopped trying to get a million people because they realize that it's a much better festival (and they can make just as much $ because the people who are there will stay longer and get served better) with around 80,000-90,000 per day instead of 100,000+. The weeknights are rarely crowded; Fridays and Saturdays can still get filled up pretty good, though.
honest question for those who don't like Summerfest:
When was the last time you went to Summerfest?
I still like Summerfest but the lineups in recent years don't get me too excited esp. since Potawotami no longer books as many blues bands as they used to
It seems like most of the bands are too young for me and the "classic rock" bands are all has-beens that I used to see at Summerfest in the 70's and aren't a draw for me these days, that said, I can't wait to see Otis Taylor again at Potawotami ;D

To be fair, it's changed quite a bit since Smiley took over.
You can guess half of the bands that will be at Summerfest prior to the bands being announced. They need to improve the variety of the fest instead of rehashing the same bands year after year.
Go to another music festival and then report back. How many music festivals bring back the same bands year after year?
how many other music festivals have like 700 bands during that years run?

We go every year at least one night and often 2-3. And we live in the Chicago 'burbs although MKE remains my 'hometown'. Summerfest has spent hundreds of millions to dramatically upgrade the grounds in the last 5-7 years. The first new stage was Miller followed by Harley, Briggs and now the BMO Harris pavilion. All represent huge upgrades.
Last year we enjoyed the Goo Goo Dolls among a large group of current MU students and had a great time. I recall a couple of years ago when one could have seen 4-5 of the greatest living guitar players of all time over a few day span including Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Eric Clapton, and BB King. This year it'll be the farewell Scorpions tour mixed in with a little Texas weird beard action on Saturday, June 30th.
Summerfest truly remains an outstanding event. And I agree with the notion that they've worked to maximize the experience by targeting 80,000 per day rather than the former 100,000 mob scene.

The Hives
Jimmy Cliff
Totally agree with you on that night's lineup. I'm gonna be like a hummingbird going back-and-forth between the Hives and Jimmy Cliff shows. I've already seen Cowboy Mouth and Morris Day a few times and they are both very entertaining.
anyone know of any deals to get into summerfest today on the cheaps? i know about the canned food drive to get in free, but won't be able to make it before 3:00, so thats out. I'd hate to drop $15 at the gate if there was a better way...

Any official discounts would be listed on summerfest.com.
Otherwise, suck it up and pay the rack rate. It's still a good deal.
months ago they gave away 45,000 free tickets good for today (we're going today as a result of that :)) so I doubt they are giving away much else but like warriorchick posted all deals are listed
they used to have free admission until 3pm on opening day
All weekdays are $9 before 4:00 pm.

Am I alone in thinking that Summerfest sucks? I'm surprised that so many posters are really excited for it.
You are not alone. Last year was actually pretty solid, but this year is just awful.

Looking at the band lineups there are actually quite a few I would like to see... except I'm going today... where there are exactly ZERO other bands I want to see. Looks like its a SSP and FF night, and a crap shoot during the day.
We watched Larry McCray at the new BMO stage at 7:30 last night. Since apparently 99% of the folks that got tickets for the blue section must have waited until after the fireworks to go to their seats the entire blue section was empty except for a few dozen people during McCray's show.
I wonder how the 7:30 acts are going to feel playing to the 1st 50 rows being empty. Oh, and Larry McCray kicked @ss as did Earl Slick with Phantom, Rocker & Slick at Potawatomie.

If you think this year's lineup is just awful, you either don't like music or you aren't familiar with many of the bands. There is at least one or two
really good acts every single night.

Exactly. Not familiar with = awful. Perhaps if I was there listening to some band I'd never heard of before, I'd like the music coming from the stage, sure.

I am not sure what the exact rules are, but since these seats are basically free, they should have a time that you have to be in your seat or it is up for grabs by the general public. It isn't fair to reserve a seat that you don't intend to use.

I always get a kick out of people trying to convince others that they need to like certain music/movies/TV show/etc.

I know, right? "Hey bro, if you don't like fun. you just don't like music." Cracks me up.

No, I meant that there are
700 bands there. There is something for everybody's taste. I think it is just plain ignorant to say that the lineup sucks when you are probably unfamiliar with 600 of the 700 bands playing so you assume they suck.
Foo Fighters were awesome last night... played for almost 3 hours.

I'm not a big Foo Fighters guy...but that is always awesome when a band (especially as big as they are) plays a long show and you get good bang for your buck.
Cowboy Mouth was great, Mutemath was good, Fun was terrible and didn't even go more than 65 minutes.
I'm glad I spent my night away from Fun...

Did anyone see the Hives on Friday night? They were f*ckin' fantastic!! They blew me away...one of the best shows I can remember seeing at Summerfest in quite a while.

I would have preferred to see the Hives, but we were stuck on the wrong side of the grounds. At least we got to laugh at the teens that were arriving at Cowboy Mouth because their precious Fun ended so early.
How were the Sammy-less Bodeans yesterday?

700 bands, sure... but what does that mean? Sure, there's a genre for every taste, but is there a performance/genre combination for everyone's taste? Look at it this way: there are three different types of performances: "live music," "concerts," and "_______fest".
Live music is chill. It's all about the music. No act, no glitz, no mosh pit, no gimmicks.... just sit back, relax, & listen to the tunes.
Concerts are about presentation. Nobody leaves an AC/DC concert saying "love me some Australian rock..." No, they say "that was an awesome
show." The music isn't always great (sometimes difficult to enjoy over unintelligibly screaming chicks), but that doesn't matter. You go to a concert to see lasers, pyrotechnics and guitarists being swung around by cables and wires... not to listen to music.
"Fest" music is either A) the local band that plays covers which everyone knows & originals that nobody knows, or B) the popular band that has played the same damn stuff for 30 years
ad nauseum, but in either case, "engages" the crowd... it might be interactive, they might play/prompt singalongs, they might throw makeshift instruments into the crowd, they might talk to their buddies in the front row between songs. Jimmy Buffet nearly defines "fest." Most of the day acts at Summerfest are playing "fest." Pat McCurdy is always "fest." These performances are typically by bands who have the most loyal following but can be a bit of an acquired taste.
Granted, there are bands that can play different types of performances depending on the day of week, crowd, venue, etc. But when they play Summerfest, bands are typically going "concert" or "fest." I prefer the "live" stuff myself, so it's difficult to find the combination of genre/performance that's going to suit my tastes... unless I've been tasting beer all night, then anything can seem enjoyable (which is why Summerfest is loved by many).
Personally, I'm indifferent... I've never turned down an invitation to Summerfest, but only once in my life have I actually gone out of my way to attend.

I caught the very end of the BoDeans show after Fountains of Wayne ended. They played "Closer to Free" and pretty much hit it outta the park. Kurt Neumann seems happy to take the lead, and the 7-piece band sounded really tight. I heard that they played all the old favorites, and it seems like they have gotten their act together in the year since Sammy left.
Imagine Dragons and Young the Giant absolutely killed it last night...I would put it ahead of any concert I've ever seen.

Great to hear they're sounding good.
Speaking of "Closer to Free" - The Yale-New Haven Hospital Smilow Cancer Center has been using the song as the background music in their local television ads. Always good to catch 30 seconds of the BoDeans a couple times an evening.
Out my way, The BoDean's just got added to New Haven's free Music on the Green series for Friday August 10 @ 7:00PM.
Heading to Rock the Green in middle of September. Anybody go last year and have suggestions? Any good food there? Multiple stages or just one? Their website is lacking.

I'm also heading there for the first time...Sounds like one stage, just a ton of great bands though.

Don't throw your empty beer bottles in the lake.
It was good it see Marquette represented at Irish Fest. My kids got MU tattoos, magnet schedules for Fall sports, window decals and Marquette bookmarks, (which featured Cubillan, Hayward, and Bulter, but are still nice).

Here's their current single, in case anyone's interested:

I saw the BoDeans last night with the wife at this fabulous little music hall in the middle of nowhere in NW Connecticut. It was a fabulous show! They sounded great. I spotted another alumi that I knew at the show also sitting in the first row.
I met the band after the show for a meet and greet and got Kurt's and etc. autograph.
I'm going to see them again tomorrow night with the whole family this time. I told them I regretted missing their free show on the New Haven Green back in August because I was on vacation. They informed me "I missed nothing because the show got rained out and was rescheduled for Columbus Day at a downtown theater near Yale."
It's still a free show and it helps that the whole family is off for the holiday.
How'd they sound without Sammy?
They sounded like the BoDeans. They didn't play any songs where Sammy would have been the "lead lead singer." Kurt was very talkative through the show. It was the same accordian & keyboardist as always (Michael Ramos.)
When I saw them roughly a year ago, sans Sammy, there was no 'Still the Night'. Kind of cheapened the experience. Has Kurt figured out how to do that one solo?

They played it. The songs from new album were very good also. They were sold out of the CD.
'Indigo Dreams'? I have it. Really good.

I bought it at the show and got it autographed. They were sold out of American Made.
I was unaware there is a new one. Internet searching to commence.

Another great show by the BoDeans in New Haven last night! Front row seats with the family. Last night was the last show of the tour for the new CD which Kurt said came out in June. They played 3 songs from the new CD (same as Sat.'s show) and they were classic BoDean jams. The title song got a very large applause from the crowd which was mostly people from Yale-New Haven Hospital who were only there to see a free show moreso than to see the BoDeans.
Yale-New Haven Hospital has been using
Closer to Free in their ad campaign for their new Cancer Center. The hospital booked the BoDeans for a free summer show in conjunction with the campaign. They told the story that back in August (when I was on the family vacation) they were already in town, their instruments and equipment were set-up on the New Haven Green and they were ready to go when a massive downpour & thunderstorn arrived 10 minutes before they were supposed to go on stage. Apparently, the BoDeans felt bad an offered the hospital to reschedule and in a totally classy move told the hospital that the makeup would be on them.
As a side note: My friend, a BoDeans fan by virtue of attendance at that university in South Bend, was telling his family and friends that my family was the only one in attendance who was personally invited by the BoDeans. Thanks BoDeans for the heads up after Saturday's show!
