Title: I really like Jamil Wilson

I'm not sure if these interviews were posted, but Jamil Wilson is a really, really impressive young man.  We saw how much he improved once Gardner went down and he was forced into the starting lineup.  That confidence will be invaluable to him these next 2 years and it will be awesome to see how far he can go at Marquette.  He's going to be special.  His athleticism is insane, especially being 6'7" (I think he's at least 6'8", definitely taller than Gardner).  I can't really remember many kids who are as good of an athlete as Wilson is.  Wade and Dominic are the two that come to mind over the last 10 years.  Can't wait to see him become a star.

I agree.  His interview was great.

In spite of his having a spotty reputation in HS (a couple suspensions, etc)... he was always a great kid.  Well spoken, goal oriented, and respectful.

Listening to his interviews over the past month has been quite impressive.  My friend coached him in volleyball and he was always talking about how great Jamil was and how successful he'd be in college.  So far, so good!

Had only heard that he was lazy and not tough in high school.  If he had character issues, it seems like he has definitely learned from them and grown up quite a bit.  Have only heard great things about his who he is going all the way back to his high school days.

Agree 100%.  Jamil is a very impressive athlete.  He speaks very well and is very athletic.  He will be a great player the next two years.  He certainly does look taller - bet he's 6'8" or 9".

I think we'll see a lot less drop-off from Jae to Jamil won't be all that bad. Wilson seems to be great on and off the court. He'll be all-Big East next year, no worse than 3rd team.

I am super excited to see him play where he belongs on the court, that being at PF not C. I am expecting big things.

By the time Jamil is a senior, he will be better than Jae was as a senior. Of all of the guys on the 2011-2012 team, Jamil will finish his MU career as the best.

Jamil's mother passed away in high school right? That may have played a role in his "troubles" in high school. My brother had a class with him and said he was a great guy and was very engaged in the class. He has a lot of potential and I really hope he's able to reach it.

I like him at small forward. But of course he isn't gonna play that Buzz' system.

Buzz would LOVE to have Jamil playing more on the perimeter. The problem is the lack of size on MU, not Buzz's system.

I am not sure lack of size will really be much of an issue next year as long as we stay healthy.

Agreed.  In Buzz's system, we have a 1, a 5 and three switchables.  If our two 5s stay healthy, Jamil will be a switchable and that will be awesome, because that is the most natural position for him.

I had an early morning class with Jamil last year. He sat in the front row and actively participated. Seemed like a great guy.

Otule and Van were in the same class, both sat in the back row and slept through it. (Can't really say I blame them)

+1

Absolutely.  He might be the best fit for that "mismatch" 4 that we've had here since Buzz came aboard.  Matthews his Sr. year, then Lazar, Jae, and now Jamil.  He might have the most raw talent and size of all of them.  He's going to be very fun to watch in the next few years.

It seems like every year we are forced to play guys out of position. Either due to injury or just lack of size. It'll be nice with a healthy crew to play guys where they are supposed to play, though the mis-matches that lazar/jimmy/jae created worked in our favor to a degree.

Also, this is another year where we don't have to rely on incoming talent to contribute. With the 7 guys we have who should compete for significant time, the aditional 5 can play without the pressure of needing to score... Or at least that's my perfect world scenario!

The Broken Yolk opened on campus recently. As part of a promo, they offered students a free pancake from 12am-3am on Friday. I saw Jamil walk in and walk to the front of the line. I will be the first to admit that I thought, "oh great, a student-athlete using his fame to get to the front of the line." But when he got to the counter he said, "Do you guys have any trash bags up here? There are a lot of paper plates outside, and I wanted to pick a few up. It's getting pretty messy."

On a team like this, character means a lot in their success as a player and a leader. I'm 100% sold on this kid.

I was one of the people skeptical of him coming out of HS, and I am glad to say he's proven me wrong. His interview after the Florida game showed me a ton about him. No tears, no spectacle, no mumbled one word answers. He manned up, gave great answers, and carried himself well despite a tough loss.

And that Broken Yolk story is awesome. Good guy, hope he continues to succeed here.

That would be great, but it's an I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it thing for me.

With his talent, it's all up to him. Will he put in the hours and hours and hours this offseason and then the next offseason to make this happen?

If so, good for him (as it relates to his future) and great for us.

100% agree and he'll be helped by not having to play out of position.  There is a chance he could make 'the jump' this year.  The jump that makes you a 1st round pick.

Buzz said in Jan he could end up being one of the all time greats at MU over the last thirty years. I love how he carries himself and am a big fan.

Are Jamil's supposed "character concerns" coming out of a HS a thing of the past or were those just baseless rumors? Or somewhere in between?

Just curious.

I think it was just that he was "soft".  I'm pretty sure Buzz took care of that.

Jamil is a very impressive person.  Very mature, hard-working, stays miles away from trouble, and appears to take school seriously and be a very good student.  Awesome to hear he's also on track to graduate next year, in four years despite transferring and already plans on grad school.  I'm certain that as he keeps working his game will continue to improve as well - tremendous improvement just over the course of the season this year.  He's really a model student athlete.

Well said.

Figured I would bump this thread.  Something more related to Marquette basketball.

i like that Jamil started shooting/making more long range shots throughout the season. he extended his game over time and that really helps to give us a "stretch 4"....

a 6-7 guy with length who can rebound, and keep other bigs honest from deep? yes please.

if he continues to refine/expand his game, get a little stronger/tougher down low, then he could be the next all around stud for MU.

One can only hope that Jamil grabs Vander when he works on his individual skills this off season. Vander wil learn to finish around the hoop if he's got got a guy like Jamil testing him.
Was anyone else amazed how many shots we saw blocked from behind the last few weeks? makes one question our speed.
