we really played as hard as we could against a very quick, athletic team. Foul troubles hurt (one of the fouls on Jae, I swear he never touched anyone) and to me Valentine is as bad as there is in the college game. But we just could not hit the shots that we hit all year. Jamal's missed alley-oop, Jae missing back-to-back open 3s, Vander's bunny going in-and-out -- we just could not make a shot. But Mayo's revival in the tourney makes me think he will be MU's next star, and I can't wait until next year, when we can actually dress more than 10 people again. Despite the loss of our two top scorers, I believe Buzz will keep this program racing ahead.
Agreed. I watched it again this afternoon and had the same impressions. Actually Junior played well other than getting the foul trouble and two of those fouls were dubious at best. His 3 TOs were in the first four minutes and MU was leading 9-4 after his 3rd TO. Now, if he only made those FTs.
I am very critical of Jr. But as he goes so goes the team. I felt like when he was in he struggled with the aggressive pressure on the perimeter which prevented MU from really getting into their O. Not to mention we began to rush shots long before it was necessary.
I only watched it once, can't bring myself to watch it again.

Agree on all counts
On Junior's first foul, it looked to me that Jamil committed more of a foul than Junior. It got to the point when he was playing so long with 2 fouls, that I thought it might have been changed or Buzz didn't know (We didn't have the sound very loud). When he picked up his third Buzz looked pretty confused and angry.
I didn't know if he was just mad at the call or thought that was only Junior's second foul. I was wondering if anyone else thought the same.

You are a tougher man than I. I have it on DVR, but can't bear to watch right now. I haven't deleted it, so maybe eventually.
I do agree with you on all counts. If I remember correctly, the 2nd foul is the one where Jae never touched him. I really felt, the first half especially, the game was called unevenly. MU did get the raw end.
And, Valentine is horrible. I have always thought he was the worst there is. Still love the time Bobby Knight walked around the court as he was exiting due to a Valentine special, brushing right by Teddy. Knight looked like he wanted to clock him. Heck, somebody probably should! ;)
The one thing I've taken away from most of the losses this year and is that MU tends to play the worst when they are rushing things and guys are taking matters into their own instead of working for a better shot and Florida and Louisville both got MU to play that type of game recently.
Doesn't it seem like Donovan called his old mentor Patino and said "How do I beat this team". Looked like a carbon copy of the Louisville game to me.
Should we have been better prepared for the pressure?

J looked like he was trying to do it all himself. He put up a couple treys awfully fast. On the other hand, had they dropped, I wouldn't be posting this.

Pressure is not why MU lost.

We had 9 turnovers, probably only 3 or 4 in the last 30+ minutes. They played good contain defense, but their pressure didn't do a lot.

+100
Pressure wasn't the cause.

We quit turning the ball over at about the same time we started standing around on offense.

Getting stuck in the slow paced half court is why MU lost.

Nope. Not that either.

Ok Coach, you should be well aware that your team does not score when they are moving at a slow pace and not getting easy transition baskets.
Cadougan on the bench and poor shooting hurt MU. Your answer is far too simplistic. Marquette has been successful against pressure and in a half court game. Cadougan is the glue to the offense. He helps spacing, ball movement and penetration. Crowder makes those 3's and your reasoning would not even be a topic.
Jae's 2nd foul was jsut minutes after worse contact on DJO which caused him to throw up a shot that hit the upper bracket and somehow went in. of cours no foul was called on the djo drive

Actually this team has been fairly efficient in the half-court. Florida did a good job clogging up driving lanes and forcing a lot of outside looks...and those looks just weren't falling. Also, Florida didn't dig the post when Davante got the ball. Florida did a good job of pushing him out and making him go one on one, which didn't work well.

LOL - good one. I just wanted to see a couple of plays.....
The two bigs for Florida, Murphy and Young, who stood 6'10" and 6'9", disrupted our driving as they towered over every MU player. They were also given a lot of leeway from the refs and never had to worry about contact and fouls called on them.

This. As I have pointed out before, every MU loss this season was to long, athletic teams who deployed zones for significant periods. Sultan does a great job breaking down the Fla loss. This is where MU missed Otule as he could create crease screens and spacing within zones. MU's turnovers were down as they rushed early shots before the zone could set while trying to force a transition game. MU just wasn't hitting anything.
Good call with "masochist". I didn't want to see highlights or hear about it on the radio, and will probably avoid the LVille/FL game today as well.
There were lots of little things. There always are whether you win or lose. But really ...
We shot 30.8 percent. We shoot 40 percent, we probably win by 10.
Sometimes, they just don't go down. And when they don't it makes other things stand out and look worse.
If you would have told me before the game Fla would only score 68, I'd have taken than and figured on a double-digit win.
Didn't hit shots. I can't fault the effort.
