Title: Chad Ford's disturbing blurb
Post by: The Lens on June 03, 2007, 04:20:05 PM
"Several underclassmen may have hurt their chances of being drafted. Marquette's Dominic James, Fresno State's Dominic McGuire, Texas A&M's James Jones, Virginia's Sean Singletary, Nevada's Marcelus Kemp, and Clemson's James Mays need to return to school. They didn't play well enough to warrant a first-round selection, and even a second-round selection is questionable for some of them.

That may be a problem for James and McGuire, who are rumored to be unwilling to return to school."
-------------------------------------------

Unwilling seems to be a strong word.  Something is fishy here.  TC played this as well as you can, he stood by his player in the "testing" process, he used his contacts etc.  Not sure what more Crean could have done, but there seems to be more to this story.

Could be some bad feeling fallout on behalf of DJ because of some things that supposedly came out of the MU Athletic Department to Orlando Camp officials regarding that DJ would only stay in the draft if he was guaranteed a first round pick. As a result  he was not a "charter" invitee to Orlando-----coming in as a fillin doesn't exactly help his hype or his confidence.

What appeared in the DraftExpress was a comment that said something "possibly" came out of the MU athletic office and who was the source for this report?  I never saw "supposedly" or "probably" mentioned in that article.  People can assume all day.

Why would Crean sabotage Dominic's NBA pre-draft camp chances, yet help Dominic set up workouts with NBA teams and get in touch with NBA scouts to get an honest impression of Dominic's chances?  Doesn't make any sense and Crean know's that if he did this, it could somehow get back to Dominic and you could kiss goodbye Crean's chances at other kids who they are recruiting who want to get to the NBA.

I disagree.

Either you got it or you don't.

Obviously, DJ doesn't have it.

DJ was indeed at a disadvantage coming into Orlando not as a charter member but as a fillin----this after everyone thought he was a "slam dunk" to get a first class invite. ----blow to his confidence and to his NBA standing-----not to mention the distraction that last minute travel arrangements and the actual travel itself had to be with such short notice.

His first day by all accounts was a disaster (to be expected considering) ----however since that first day he has gotten better each day------today, the 4th day, was his best showing yet ----that is according to Draft Express!

DJ's line: 7 points, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3-8 FG, 1-3 3PT

And this..."James started the game off by picking off a pass with his quickness and anticipation on the defensive end, then taking the ball the length of the court, only to miss a weak lay-up when he should've gone harder to the hole to draw contact and finish strong."

And I think we've seen enough of this from DJ this past year..."James next made a very nice crossover dribble move going from right to left, taking the ball forward with his left hand, but he missed on a pull-up jumper from 10 feet out as he moved across the lane, taking an off-balanced shot that he was unable to convert. James missed on a similar play later in the game, with that attempt actually coming from 20 feet out, a shot with an even higher degree of difficulty. "

["This may have been Dominic James' best game of the camp, and looking at his stat line, it's pretty obvious to realize that that's not a good thing for a player who was projected so highly in the early preseason".

"In terms of playing the point, James did a pretty good job keeping his teammates involved, making some nice passes, though his teammates didn't always finish or even catch the passes. He had some drive-and-dishes, kick-outs, and dump-offs, occasionally doing so off advanced dribbling moves like his crossover. Defensively, James was a mixed bad, letting opposing point guard Taurean Green by on a few occasions, but playing some aggressive defense on him at others".]

77ncaachamp-----you left out several of the more positive comments on DJ by Draft Express (see above).

As near as I can determine he had 8 assists and only 1 TO in the four days.

Problem is that posts or writeups imply not only was shooting not up to snuff but he didn't make others better which is what a true pt guard does. He is a hell of an athelete but still has a ways to go to be a strong PT guard. He has always been able to score at will prior to college and still needs to adjust when he cant.
