Title: Pretty sure this would be bad news for MU..
Post by: jesmu84 on March 20, 2012, 04:24:14 PM
Roy Schmidt tweet:

@prepsbullseye: Simeon's Robert Smith was in Champaign yesterday & talked to Illini AD Mike Thomas about becoming an asst coach. Don't know how far it got.

Sounds like a pipeline set-up, right?

So, the AD hires the assistant coaches?

Pretty sure that would be bad news for Illinois if they wanted Jabari Parker and/or Kendrick Nunn.  Hiring a coach then getting a commit from one of his players is no longer legal.

With Wilson in the fold, Nunn is just gravy and there is no way we can fit both Nunn and Parker. No really concerned where Smith goes at this point.

It's ok if the hire is as a full assistant.  Can't be as a non-assistant staff position.

Well that seems weird but I stand corrected.

Score in Chicago were saying this was done deal. Also mentioned several times about Buzz band his relationship with school. I listened most of the day and all of the guys definitely get a kick out of Buzz. They seem to believe that Buzz could be had and not just for money.

The Score has questionable enough sources on its pro beats. It has absolutely no insider knowledge on college hoops. None. These are just talking heads doing their thing.

It would seem odd for the AD to spend time hiring an assistant prior to locking down a head man, unless they have the head man waiting to take the reins and want to send the assistant out on the recruiting trail.

MU82...did not say it was breaking news because the score was talking about Buzz. Did thing it is funny that our crack media is reporting about six week old underage issues and folks in Chicago are talking about Buzz being very unhappy. Guys in Chicago could be flat to crazy but you can be assured no one locally is close enough to situation to anything.

prepbullseye on twitter is typically a pretty reliable source on recruiting news from Illinois, and he seems to be all confused about what is going on down in Champaign, so I doubt the Score has any clue whatsoever.

Boers and Bernstein were talking about Buzz being an option for Illinois this afternoon. They both said that Buzz was "a lot bit crazy" but in a good way and that he's an outstanding coach. Bernstein thought that leaving a small, Catholic school for a huge land grant university would be a no-brainer, considering how much more money U of I has. Boers and the 2 producers strongly disagreed, stating that MU has had a better program for a number of years, more tradition and better facilities. Bernstein changed his tune later when he learned that Buzz makes $2MM a year. It was interesting to hear a group of guys who don't have much interest in college basketball discuss a college basketball coach.

This is what I heard, not sure what Goose was talking about.

Does Bernstein know Marquette basketball turned the 55th biggest profit of any program last year? Oh, and that's 55th of any basketball OR football Programs. Spent more than anyone but duke on hoops.

Bernstein later said that it would be a lateral move for Buzz, but if a new coach had to pick between the two, Illinois would be an easy pick.

Hard to argue that.

What time was the Buzz talk?  I want to podcast it.  I listened to the show until 4:15 or so and missed it.

No, he didn't. He was very surprised to learn Buzz's salary and seemed to change his tune after that.

Titan - It was probably around 4:45, maybe a little earlier. It started when a caller brought up the idea of Illinois going after someone already coaching at a big-time program like Jay Wright, Buzz Williams or Mick Cronin.
