It was a great game to watch. Kansas stole that one - they were totally out of sync offensively and got very little out of their halfcourt sets. But some late turnovers led to easy baskets and next thing you know, purdue let one slip through their hands that they controlled for 39 minutes. The type of game that sticks with you for a long time.
Can somebody please explain their possession up 1 with 35 or so on the clock? That was bizarre.
In that case i dont have a problem with it. Take the dunk. Running around for another second and say he misses a ft. Then that last shot goes in and u lose by one. Take the layup or dunk if its wide open, the prayer only ties

I'm talking about purdues possession prior to the Taylor steal. It was completely strange.

I was half-expecting to see Travis Diener fire a pass to Scott Merritt with 1 second left on the shot clock and then hear the crowd mercilessly boo Merritt for taking a bad shot.

I agree with this. In that situation I'm sure he was going so fast he didn't know how close people were. If the points are there then I think it's best to take them and make them go the length of the court and hit a tough three to send it into overtime. Trying to change directions that quick could mean him dribbling off his foot or missing free throws. I think he had enough space to dribble it out without getting fouled, but at that pace and him not being able to see behind, I think he made the right decision.
I think the goal was to get Jackson one on one and get to the basket, even though he was about 1 for 7 on lay ups in the game. Passed up an open 15 footer during that sequence as well.

Marquette is my team. Purdue is where I went to graduate school and I also cheer for them. I am proud of our effort tonight in almost knocking off the #2 seeded Jayhawks. We were a 10 seed that arguably a month ago was a bubble team to get into the tournament. They acquitted themselves well, but it is disappointing. A game that probably Purdue should have won. Now let's get MU over the hump and go a little farther this year than last. We have a great opportunity in front of us.
Was rooting for Purdue. Hummel is the kinda guy college basketball fans root for. He busted his a**. Wish he would have at least made the sweet 16.

This. Didn't see the 2nd half but his first half was the Hummel of old. He was a damn good player.

Don't want to turn this into a bash TC thread, but I know for a fact that Rob did not receive a piece of information from MU during his recruitment. Probably wouldn't have ended up here, but Indiana is further away from his hometown than Milwaukee.

Well, his recruitment was a bit odd. He is from Valparaiso, and his parents are personal friends of Homer Drew (Valpo's former coach). He verballed to Valpo early, and it was pretty clear that he was going to stick with that, until he started to emerge late in his junior year. Even after that he didn't really look more than outside the local area (Purdue, IU, Northwestern, Notre Dame) and it was clear that he wanted to stay close to home.
My understanding was that he was going to stick with Valpo until Drew told him to look elsewhere. Similarly, I don't know if people heard the story about Brandon Wood yesterday. Wood transferred from Valpo to Michigan State without sitting out the year due to the "graduated early" exception. Izzo wasn't going to take Wood out of respect for Drew, but Drew called Izzo and said "If he's not going to play here, I want him to play for you."

I don't think he ever said he was going to Valpo. He was a ballboy for Valpo growing up. I know Valpo was the first to offer him a scholarship after his sophomore year. I think Indiana, NC State and Purdue were in his final three. Indiana and NC State both took themselves out of the running with their respective coaching changes at the time. He was never considered the best player on his high school team even (Scott Martin).
Painter gave this game away in the best Digger tradition. Guys like this are so arogant - just obsessed about controlling every aspect.
Of course you want to use some clock, but you don't waster 28 - 30 dribbling at mid-court. That gives you one and only one chance to run a play, If the defense steps up - you're dead.
Why not run off 20 seconds and then get into the play? Then, if the defense shuts off the play, you have time to re-set.
Painter has a way to go, cuz no coach ever "lost" as many games as Digger

Heard that story and the "mutual respect for two long time coaches" is very refreshing.
