Did anyone else see Digger going nuts about the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team this morning? He said that the students started shouting "U-S-A, U-S-A!!!" and that's why they lost to Marquette. I went back and looked and don't know what he's talking about. The USA/Russia game was played on February 22, 1980, I'm positive of this because it was on my third birthday. Looking at the schedule, Marquette played Notre Dame on February 24, 1980 (and won, 77-74 at ND).
Either way, it was funny to hear him flipping out about losing to Marquette, but what on earth is he on about?
More MU hate from Digger on Sportscenter this morning.
Sportscenter was talking about the upsets in Friday and did a list of the greatest upsets in history. They ended with the USA beating USSR in hockey in 1980.
Digger chimed in that he is good friends with Mike Eruzione and reminded everyone that the game was a semi-final (played on February 22, 1980). The final was against Finland on Sunday February 24, 1980.
Then Digger said with a real disgust and anger in his voice that during the final hockey game on Sunday, ND was also playing MU. According to Digger, ND lost the game because the fans were chanting "USA,USA" during the game. Not sure why that would make ND lose (are they not American?) but clearly Digger was emotional recalling that story.
Digger's hate for MU is long and deep. Let's keep winning as I like it when Digger is pissed off.
Brew, Digger's mind isn't what it used to be.
He flipped out losing to Marquette because we were better than Notre Dame. Al was a better coach than he was and our players generally were better than his.
Besides, unless we played ball at 9:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, which was EXTREMELY unlikely, the game would not have been affected. We don't play games at 9:00 a.m., on Sundays because Catholics generally have another obligation at that time of week.
Digger is as big a has-been as Dick Vitale. At least, unlike Vitale, he wasn't a never was!
Digger has always had a severe case of MU envy and an Al McGuire inferiority complex. What's he about? He's about being a Napoleonic-sized headcase and an MU hating douche.
OMFG!!!! Digger just picked us to beat Murray State...I'm not sure if that's a good th...OUCH! A piece of sky just fell on my head.

Hank was a better coach, too. At least in 1980!

Gold medal game?
Seth Greenberg also picked us.
And over on ESPNU Hubert Davis and Jimmy Dykes also picked us.
A clean sweep so far!

Just looked, and the gold medal game was in fact played on 2/24.

We are doomed.
So far this year's Tourney seems special to me.
1) MU won it's first game.
2) The BE is 7-3
3) 2 out of the 3 BE teams who lost, I am glad they lost (ND and WVU)
4) The highest seeded team which we can meet in the Sweet 16, lost (to a team we beat twice)
5) Duke lost, I don't know exactly why, but I am so happy to see them sent home early
6) Did I mention that the Domers lost?
7) MU continuing and ND being sent home, I am sure drives Digger crazy
Now it is time to lock in and get the W today against the Racers. I expect it to be a hard fought battle but I also expect Canaan to get the Tu Holloway treatment from last year's tourney. Onward Warriors!!!!
My guess is we would hate on a team if one of their fans dumped a beer on us....
Not saying it wasn't deserved, but..... ;D
I've never heard a coach blame the fans for a loss before. WEAK!

What's worse...he was blaming the NOTRE DAME fans! That game was played in South Bend.
Also, it was the gold medal game...I just caught the end of the rant and missed it because they were showing highlights of the Miracle finish first.

Vitale's coaching (only) claim to fame is his win over MU in 1977.

Yeah, but Vitale admits that was his high point. Digger's ego is another matter.

I was at that game. Don't remember anything unusual.

Only one? ::)
Does digger picking us amount to a reverse jinx? I say no for two reasons. First, he still wants us to lose, but he has to pick us once in a while just to save face. Therefore, since he really wants our opponent to win, the reverse jinx is reversed
back. Secondly, digger sucks and the basketball gods (who control the jinxes) don't give a damn about what he thinks or says.

I remember the conversation something like this...."Beer? Who? No, sir, it must have been somebody else" Heehee

I was glad UCONN lost too. Didn't deserve to be in the tourny in my opinion. I was a bit sad for Calhoun because he's old as sh*t and his health hasn't been great, but then again, he's also a huge d*ck, so maybe not. F*ck UCONN.
Digger is irrelevant. And he knows it.
They just showed this again on E**N "NEWS." The "what are you smoking??" look that Digger got at the end of that was the kicker, along with Seth Greenberg saying "I think you've lost control."
Yeah... perhaps they should show Dukie V crying about last night.
Speaking of... has anyone seen him today on E**N? He might need to be put on watch...
MU smoked Digger 3 of 4 in my MU days, including the beer dump. He was the Huggy bear of his day.

I know the semi final game was on tape delay (vivdly remember Jim McKay introduce the game with jubilant people behind him), and remember watching the final game in the afternoon...so it was probably on tape delay.
