Title: For anyone who cares...J.P. Tokoto
Post by: GOMU85 on March 14, 2012, 12:50:37 PM
J.P. Tokoto will be playing in the Jordan Brand All-Star Game

Jamil Wilson played in this game a few years ago.

Would you not take him if he pulls a Jamil Wilson?

I haven't seen him enough to make a decision, but his athleticism is definitely high NBA level already. That can still take you a lot of places at the college level.

Yes, don't get like some other programs internet fans who rip any recruit who doesn't pick their school.

Yup.  If he was a Marquette commit we'd be going nuts over him.

He has a long way to go in terms of basketball skills, but his athletic skills are insane.

I've never seen Tokoto in action. How has he done his senior year? Has he lived up to expectations, or were those expectations almost impossible to meet? Do you think he'll get much court time next year at UNC, or will he need some seasoning?

Haven't seen him this year but saw him a couple times last year.  His shot definitely needed work.  Almost looked like Vander's.  Very flat, just looks...wrong.  But unbelievably athletic.  Handles the ball very well.  Good court vision and passing ability.  Fairly unselfish.  When I saw them, they completely misused him.  They had him sitting in the post and he was very ineffective.  I would've loved to see him in a more open-court game and getting the ball out on the wings (which is why I would guess he excels in AAU).

He won't be one of UNC's best players, but he will get playing time, as UNC goes 10 deep every year (barring injuries, like this year).  Plus with potentially Zeller, Henson, Barnes, and Marshall all going pro (Zeller is a senior so he's gone for sure, plus they have 4 others listed as seniors but have 16 listed on the roster so some might be walk-ons), there are minutes to be had.

I agree with your assessment.  JP was a taller kid when he was young, and played low post.  Never developed perimeter game.  He is thin and unbelievably athletic, not strong enough to play low, and is still developing his perimeter game.  You don't always get a chance to develop @ UNC.  Hopefully his athleticism gets him where he needs to be.

Not really interested. Good luck and best wishes to the young man. Don't care about any WI recruits, nor Fisher either. Let's talk about Steve Taylor and MU recruits

Roy Williams has compared him to Vince Carter - now I don't know if his upside is THAT good...

But, lets be real, this kid can play, and is freakishly athletic - in a AAU circuit tournament - he averaged close to 7 dunks a game (27 in 4 games)

I would be surprised if he didn't win the dunk contest.  Unbelievable athlete.  Here is a dunk from this year.

That's just top-level recruiting right there. If Buzz would just compare Parker to MJ, then I'd feel pretty good about our chances of landing him.

On a good day, Murray, your P.F. Flyers couldn't carry you.

Surprised that he quit growing at a young age.  Think a lot of people thought he would grow to 6'9" or so.  Still disappointed that he didn't decide to go to Marquette.  Perhaps he will change like Jamil in a year or so.

OK...what about them?  It's real easy to avoid a topic you don't care about ya know.

And regarding JPT, my guess is that the UNC boards will be giving him the "ErickJD08 Vander treatment" his first couple years in Chapel Hill, but he will be a solid contributor by the time he graduates.

He's 17 or 18 years old. Take it easy.

The thing that a lot of folks will see with JPT is how bad of a team he plays on. MFHS is dreadful. Unlike Jamil Wilson who could carry the entire team, JPT hasn't this year and fals has suffered some serious blow outs. They were doubled up by gtown. While not a reflection on jpt's game, it stands out.

This.  Best of luck to Tokoto with his career.

That's actually quite the accomplishment for this season.  They are insane.

J.P.'s problem may be when he shows up at Chapel Hill and nine of his teammates are McDonald's All-Americans who were the best players in states that play better basketball than Wisconsin.

But that would be unfair.  Jamil's Horlick team was much more talented that JPT's Falls team.  The second leading scorer on that team, Antwon Oliver, originally signed with Iowa State before transferring to a JUCO.

I doubt anyone on that Falls team will be playing college basketball on any level.

Fair enough. Didn't realize Gtown's team had to B1G recruits.

Yep.  And Memorial has Lomomba who is playing at Cleveland State...and Brendan Ortiz who is probably going to a similar type of school in 2013.  That semifinal should be huge.
