Title: Excited for game as a visitor
Post by: Archaea on March 14, 2012, 10:37:15 AM
Been a fan since 77 when Butch Lee, Jerome Whitehead and Al downed those baby blues and Dean Smith. Well, I have lots of teams I enjoy, being now principally a BYU fan.

You'll find a rabid base, with some ding dongs, but overall we just enjoy sports from basketball to rugby. I remember walking on some soccer fields, stumbling upon a BYU club lacrosse and being pissed because they lost the club tournament to Arizona State. I didn't even know BYU had a lacrosse team before that. Such is life as a BYU sports fan.

In any event, the cold calculating side of me says that Marquette wins this game about two thirds to 70% of the time. Marquette is battle tested, a very good defensive team and offensively efficient. You have better interior play than Iona and great speed.

BYU is usually slower than most team but more athletic than people give us credit for. We were once five strong up front but lost two to injuries and Hartsock was hobbled until recently. He is consistent and in playing with Davies provides the backbone of our team. From there it floats from role player to role player. Sometimes Charles Abouo plays the hero sometimes one of the freshmen guards.

In any event, it is great for me as a basketball fan to see BYU play one of the historic programs. I've been traveling to Syracuse quite a bit and actually saw the WVA victory by Syracuse where the refs missed the goal tending. Actually, my angle didn't let me see that. Huggins went bezerk.

In any event, good luck Thursday, just not too much. And if the more probable result occurs good luck beyond. If somehow, Cougars sneak by the Warriors please come and stop by.

I have watched a few Marquette games this year but don't remember the particulars of your offensive sets. What are the most common sets I'll see in the half court?

Thank you for your hospitality.

We run the triangle offense, or sometimes the swing.  Please pass this info back to the BYU scouts.  Thanks.

The best defensive posture against MU is to get back as fast as you can to catch the ball at the bottom of the net so you can inbound it

A bunch of comedians.

Okay in any event, Marquette will be warmed up for a potential date with Murray State.

Every BYU fan that comes on here is so nice. Whatever blogger called us the "Ned Flanders" of the Big East needs to meet BYU. They make us look like Nelson Muntz in comparison! :)

If you were coaching against BYU, how would you attack them?
MU plays like Iona, but has a pair of go-to guys who can will the team to win.   The secret to beating MU is to zone us, and then attack Crowder and Johnson-Odom whenever they touch the ball on the perimeter.   Both are good catch-and-shoot 3 pt shooters, neither are good at shooting 3 off of the dribble.    Let everybody else beat you from the outside.   Offensively, if you have guards who attack the rim, you have an edge.    Hold onto the ball, reverse it, attack the rim.
MU is as athletic as Iona, pushes the ball at every opportunity, plays better half court defense, and has seen every version of the 2-3 zone known to mankind and still managed to go 14-4 in the B-East.   So even "the secret to beating MU" isn't always successful.    Extremely well coached, disciplined in both offensive and defensive sets, and possibly the best team in college basketball in transition.    Not to denigrate your team, but if MU plays to its abilities, MU wins.

Marquette should win most of the time. It is overall the better team.

Beating BYU starts with the guards. Good guard play defeats the Cougars as all of our guards, save one walk on, are freshmen, so they make freshmen mistakes. They can get to the rim but they often don't make the decision to get there.

Beating BYU requires discipline, full game intensity, and knowing how to slice through the zone. Syracuse plays a great zone so yes, Marquette won't go all soft seeing a zone.

BYU didn't show it last night but it can run the floor. It was disappointing how it played the transition offense but then Rose adjusted.

I would get back on defense, press on defense and attack the seams in the zone when zone is played. I'd double up on Davies and Hartsock and make the other players beat you. You may lose some interior players to fouls but letting either player roam usually spells disaster and a loss. The role players don't always score enough but if they are on, then BYU is difficult to defeat.

If you want to beat MQ, pressure JC in the backcourt, see UL in BE Tournament.

Welcome Arch.  Obviously few teams have had success against MU.  We do best when we can force turnovers and explode out on the break.  Our coach Buzz Williams places a great emphasis on 'paint touches' so expect penetration and then either a shot or a kick to the 3.  Our big fella Gardner is also very graceful and fluid around the hoop.  Watching your bigs last night, I think he'll be a handful for your guys.  And on defense, I expect to try to pressure your young guards into mistakes.

Overall, I'd expect MU to win 8 out of 10 games against BYU with the losses more a result of our not playing to the gameplan.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote. The game will turn on how many bad decisions our guards make. If they can limit them, then our passing game should keep BYU in the game.

BYU is usually a good shooting three point team, but went through a horrible stretch in February where it could hit the broad side of a the proverbial barn. But it is turning it around again and starting to hit its threes.

I expect to see BYU try to attack the rim, shoot the kick out three and force your guards to take it to the rim. BYU normally plays mistake free ball but last night's first half was not indicative of how it normally plays. Some of that may be due to rust.

Again, it will be no surprise if MU wins or even wins handily. But BYU win go down fighting, which is what you need for the later rounds. As an aside, almost no opponent is impressed with BYU athletically so BYU has to play consistent, intelligent ball. That is usually its hallmark.

Good luck tomorrow. Watched the game last night. It was an impressive comeback and fun to watch.

Forcing won't be necessary.  All the guards penetrate.  That is what MU's offense is based upon.

One other thing to watch for, since we lost Otule and Gardner (though Gardner has now returned), Wilson has played more of the 5 spot.  He is VERY quick and athletic.  He plays the point on the press a lot and is instrumental in forcing mistakes.  He also is a good shot blocker (former HS volleyball star).

I will watch for it. Quick teams bother BYU but all teams are quicker than BYU so BYU is bothered in some degree by all teams. BYU just adjusts, sometimes enough and sometimes not. It had 8 frustrating losses. I remember all eight of them and had a coronary each time. Especially because I was mentally moving the defenders over where they should have been. Perhaps, you've been there, screaming at your tv to the player to move his stinking feet. Ah well, the life of a fan.

MU needs to just press and play pressure defense man to man. BYU murdered Iona when they stupidly fell back and allowed BYU to pass around the top of the key and shot 3s. We got to pressure, and use our full court press.

I fully expect MU to come out and press BYU. Against freshman guards, and the way we pressed Louisville...during our quick spurt...I see our quickness on defense aggravating BYU into some quick offensive fouls/turnovers.
