Title: No Illinois teams at The Dance
Post by: mr.MUskie on March 12, 2012, 11:24:41 AM
2 from Wisconsin.  2 from New Mexico!  Montana & South Dakota got in.  But not one team from Illinois.  Guess we should forget about recruiting those Chicago kids.

The problem is the Illinois schools aren't recruiting the Chicago kids.

You obviously forgot about Notre Dame.

I really hope this is a joke, referring to the fact that ND is part of ESPN Chicago or something....

What do you mean, are you saying ND isn't in Chicago? Don't let all the ND alums in Chicago hear that...

They had to make room for all the Jesuit schools that got in.

That being said, I think there's a strong chance Loyola makes the tourney next year.  They should replace DePaul in the Big East.

And Northwestern has NEVER been in the NCAA Tournament in its 73 year history.

It must be in Illinois; the Chicago papers give their BB team full-article coverage for every game.  Marquette is out of state; therefore, it's lucky to get anything more than the box score.

People still read papers?

Edit:  But seriously - check out the ND articles on the Trib's college sports page.  It's ridiculous:  http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/#&lid=College&lpos=Sub

For what it's worth, Marquette gets decent coverage in Chicago.

I can't get a clear signal on my MUTV channel. What's your secret?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Marquette gets more coverage when they lose as opposed to when they win.

Or if the topic is some sort of alleged sexual assault.

The Sun-Times has always given MU better coverage than the Tribune.  Today Marquette got a paragraph capusle in the "Area Teams" on p. 62 (as much ink as ND, btw) and "Marquette's Seeding Deserves Three Cheers" was the headline for the Big East article, (with Buzz picture included) on p. 60.

Marquette gets coverage in Chicago, just not as much as ND. ND has a football team that half the southside and northern suburbs roots for. Marquette does not.

Simple as that.

Oh and about the Illinois teams recruiting Chicago... don't you think they are trying? Bruce Weber couldn't lock in John Scheyer even though Weber's brother was his high school coach. D. Rose, also recruited by U of I among others.

Not compared to ND.

ND is a much more popular school on a national level, primarily because of football. There are A LOT of ND fans with no connection to the university. There aren't very many Marquette fans without a connection to Marquette.

Wow, the MU fan inferiority complex even applies to Illinois.

This is I believe the second time in the last three years where no Illinois teams have made the tournament.  With all the talent that Illinois produces, you would think that one of the 13 division one schools could make the tournament.

Both Illinois State and Western Illinois lost in overtime in the championship games of their respective conferences. Not that this changes anything, but the state was close to having two teams in the tourney.

Illinois also has 12 D1 teams (SIU-Edwardsville, SIU-Carbondale, Northern, Eastern, Western, ISU, U of I, Chicago State, UIC, Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola) to Wisconsin's 4.

I'm an Illinois resident, but just throwing that out there...

Only problem was that Illinois would not let somebody else take his ACT for him.
