Title: Who's your dream sweet 16 match up?
Post by: RawdogDX on March 05, 2012, 02:12:05 AM
I've decided on Michigan.  I think we can crush that team:
- They don't have a shot blocker.
- They only have one good rebounder and he can't shoot FTs and prone to foul trouble.
- no one over 6'9 who plays a ton.
- don't force a lot of turn overs.
- best scorers on the team are a SO  and a FR.
- one good SR but i think we match up well with him.

they have several shooters but think we could blow this team out.

I'd love to play and beat Crean and Indiana. Though I realize a team like Michigan would be a little better matchup prolly. I got a feeling too that we just might see I4 in our side of the bracket.

A 14-seed.  :)

But in actuality, if we are a:

2-seed: Ohio State
3-seed: Michigan State (Draymond vs. Jae would be epic)
4-seed: Syracuse

Count me out.  They can shoot the 3 ball way too well for me to ever want to play them.

Michigan is very well coached and run stuff to get real good looks.  They are a great shooting team and would hurt us from 3....

My dream would be a 3 vs 6 matchup vs. Creighton. Some brackets have this and I would love this one. Our speed and strength would cause them serious problems.

This would be a round of 32 game.  Since we will be either a 2, 3 or outside chance 4 the answer to this query would have to be a 1, 2 or 3 seed.  As for me, I just want to avoid Kentucky and North Carolina for as long as possible.  After our first game, the rest are going to be toss ups anyway, unless we are lucky enough to face an upset winner.

darn it guys, we did it again.  we blew it by not taking it one game at at time.  I'm sure the team won't be able to overcome the rampant speculation and keep the focus on the next game.  I wish we didn't have such control over the results of games...

Bad losses, please, PRN.    We have no 'bad' losses, according to the RPI.   Since we all follow the team religiously, we know there were some games where MU played poorly.    Vandy.   Cinci.    LSU.   Against Syracuse, Georgetown, and ND, we played bad for a stretch and couldn't overcome it.   ND and Georgetown, they got hot the last 10 minutes and MU couldn't get a stop.   So, 'lay and egg'?    Thrice a season is reasonable.

They'll have to get an at-large bid...and with how they finished, I wouldn't expect it. MTSU has no top-50 wins and their season ended with two awful losses to RPI 212 Western Kentucky and 207 Arkansas State. Had they made the Sun Belt final and lost to Denver, they might have had a shot at an at-large, but with those losses, I can't see it.

And @ PRN (http://www.rcindia.org/Smileys/default/rofl.gif)

For fans of a 2-3 seed (and we're locked in there) to dream about the Sweet 16 is not putting the cart before the horse. Yes, we have to win 2 games to get there, but we will be favored in both.

Finally...my dream match-up in the Sweet 16 is probably Wisconsin. We know we can beat them, and they simply don't have enough weapons to keep up with us. Tie down Jordan Taylor and they will fold. Of course, that would require us to reach the 2-line and UW to reach the 3-line. Both happening might be a stretch.

If we're a 2, Georgetown for sure. Wisconsin if they can win the Big10/11/12 and that somehow could happen.

If we're a 3, it means Ohio State, Michigan State or both hung onto a 2, and either would be better to face than numerous other options. Both teams are similar to us, with one versatile but not towering stud (Sullinger/Green/Crowder), one talented perimeter player (Buford, Appling, DJO) and good role players in support. Sullinger and Green are both excellent but Buford is significantly better than Appling (Appling is more of a PG-by-default while Buford is a pure shooter), so that would suggest Michigan State is a slightly better matchup for us. Then again, I'd take Izzo over Matta as a game coach, and MSU plays defense like few others.

I'm not even gonna think about us being a 4. Could happen, but I'm trying to keep the positive vibes going.

I am going to play this game under the assumption that the favored teams will win in the first two rounds because there are obviously more favorable match-ups than this. BUT, if we are 3 seed, I truly hope Mizzou is the 2. I think we could take Mizzou to the cleaners.

I think we beat any big 10 team except OSU.  I don't think indiana is as good of a match up as Michigan.

The only teams that I haven't seen mentioned: UNC, Duke, Baylor, Murray State, Florida.

I don't want to play UNC or Florida.
Duke wouldn't be the worst thing, but will probably be a one.
I know nothing about Baylor or Murray State.

Sullinger would take an absolute S*** on us on the inside.  I don't know why you'd rather play them than a team like Kansas, who I feel is a much weaker team.  Not that I'm holding any grudge on Taylor, but I just don't think he is as good as he's made out to be.  Not very clutch and turns the ball over too much.  If we get a 3, that would be a 2 seed I'd like to play.

Baylor is long and very talented, but are either undisciplined or just a collection of talent that doesn't mesh well together.

Baylor has crappy guards (outside of pierre jackson) and their bigs don't play big.

Most definitely. As scary as Robinson is, Jeff Withey would give MU fits as well. Kansas with two shot blocking bigs is a horrible, horrible match-up for MU.

Ohio State not so much. Yes, Sullinger would be tough to handle, but he is prone to foul trouble and is not a shot blocker.

In case anyone got confused, we have a double bye in the Big East tournament.  In the NCAA tournament, we still have to play the first two rounds (I don't count the first four games).  Let's not think too far ahead.

Yes, because I'm sure that Buzz has bypassed prepping for the Big East tournament and is spending all his time practicing for our most likely Sweet 16 match-ups.  ::) ::) ::)

Give me a break. Unless you're Jamail Jones in disguise, WE ARE NOT ON THE TEAM. Nothing we say here, nothing we do, will make any difference in how Buzz and the players prepare for MSG or the NCAA tournament. There is no harm whatsoever in us trying to figure out what bracket set-up would be best for our team. All this thread is is Marquette fans talking Marquette basketball and trying to figure out which other teams in the country would be good or bad match-ups. There is absolutely no harm in that.

Anyone that thinks that a thread featuring Marquette FANS trying to picture where the team might be in a couple weeks is going to have any impact on where the team will actually be in a couple weeks is insane.

If you'd rather discuss which second and third round teams you don't want to see, such as potential 14/15 seed Montana out of the Big Sky, a team that plays great defense and can get hot from 3, then fine, go start that conversation. But please don't be so stupid as to think that Marquette FANS looking at the top 20 or so teams in the country and trying to figure out which we do and don't want to play will have any impact on whether or not we end up playing any of them.

The teams that concern me are the one's that have guard play and a long defensive center.  Ohter than that, I will take my chances with whatever team MU faces.

MU is a different brand of team.  similar to Missouri in some ways, but different.  They attack, attack and attack the interior.  They play fast paced basketball.  They have a very good and sometimes excellent press.  Unique team to face, in many ways.

We tend to concern ourselves with the match-up problems of the other teams.  I like to think of the match-up problems MU brings to the table.

If MU makes it to the Sweet 16, I say, bring it on!  I don't care who they face, I trust Jae and DJO will have the team prepared and take them on their back, if necessary!

If this is serious, then you need to get a life.  It's a simple joke intended to make the point that a lot of people are looking way down the road, which is fine.  A four paragraph response calling me insane and stupid is a bit overboard.  Aren't you getting married soon?  Lighten up dude.

Over the past couple years, I've seen plenty of people completely serious with that "looking too far ahead" crap point of view on this board. Since it's frequently said seriously (and you weren't the first in this thread to say it) why would I ever think you were making a joke without teal? You hear the same thing over and over again, it gets annoying. The response isn't just to you, it's to everyone that thinks MU fans looking at the Sweet 16 are thinking too far ahead.

And what does getting married have to do with anything?  ?-(

I thought by pointing out that we don't get a bye into the Sweet 16 was enough to indicate that I was joking, but if not my bad.  I also think it's pretty unlikely we would face a 7-24 Rhode Island squad in the Sweet 16 but go ahead and chew him out for not using teal.  The whole point of sarcasm is the subtlety.  If you have to flag it for everyone it ruins the point.

The point about you getting married was that you should be happy, not angry.  All the best on your big day, Robert Frozena

Big difference in the obvious sarcasm of Rhode Island, Illinois, or MVSU (also mentioned above) and a point that was seriously made earlier in the thread by PRN  :-\

As a grad of both MU and IU and a BIG TC Fan, I would love to see IU put into our side of the bracket.  Also would love another shot at Brey and the Stinking Irish.

Otherwise, one game at a time, don't care who we play, but let's have them all over by the 12 minute mark of the second half OR SOOONER!!  No NAIL Biters!!!
