Title: Basketball Differences
Post by: TheDOC816 on March 02, 2012, 08:50:00 AM
Here is an interesting article about how in the NCAA you can use different brands of balls and how Wisconsin is the only school to use Sterling, which some say has an adverse affect on shooters from different schools.

That was actually brought up before the UW game.  And that MU practices with Sterling bballs the week prior.

If the ball is so different you would think it would be more of a disadvantage for them than an advantage since their opponents would only play one game with their ball and they would have to play at least half their games with a different ball.

Balls and tight or loose rims. I think loose rims favor a good rebounding team as the balls are not going to bounce far from the rim. I also found it intersting that the ball can vary from 29 1/2 to 30. A 30 ball probably bounces farther off the rim. A 29 1/2 ball results in the basket being larger compared to the ball. Does a 3 point team favor a 29 1/2 ball?

But it would explain partially why UW was usually near invincible at home and average on the road.

Partially.  I think the main reason is that they are dependent on the outside shot.

They use...a freakin' Adidas ball.  Clearly the only reason we lost.

Yes.  They do look a lot alike, though they don't share the heftier gene.
