Title: "We want Novak"
Post by: kira67 on February 29, 2012, 09:00:25 PM
The Madison Square Garden's crowd asking to have Novak back ! Another huge game, 5 threes, and he helped the Knicks take a huge lead.

With Stoud and Melo, the lead was cut to eight...

Hopefully he'll be able to sign a multi-year contract at the end of the season instead of having to go to a training camp where he'll battle for the 15th spot on a roster...

Steve is absolutely killing it.  Lin driving to the bucket is creating just enough room/time for Steve to get his shot off.

I can't imagine SOMEONE in the NBA not willing to give him a multi-year contract after the way he's performed.

Now I wish Wes would find his shot this season, he hasn't been shooting the ball well at all this season.

Novak Another Out-of-Nowhere Sensation
By JAKE APPLEMAN
GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Steve Novak is 28 and stands 6 feet 10 inches, and as he gets ready for the Knicks’ next game on Sunday, he is just a few 3-pointers away from being a full-fledged cult hero. Or maybe he already is.

In the unlikely season of Jeremy Lin, Novak is beginning to run a close second. All his game needs is a name, and it will surely get one if he keeps squaring up from beyond the 3-point line and providing the Knicks with momentum-shifting baskets.

Shooting 3-pointers is what Novak does. He did it with the Houston Rockets as a rookie in the 2006-7 season, and then with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs. And now, to far more acclaim, he is doing it with the Knicks.

The Elias Sports Bureau says that since Novak has entered the N.B.A., a little more than 72 percent of his shots have been from 3-point range, the highest percentage of any player in the league over that period, based on a minimum of 500 total field-goal attempts.

Most players who are as tall as Novak prefer to take shots closer to the basket. But not Novak. And certainly not this season, when the number of 3-pointers compared with his other field-goal attempts — 113 to 27 — means almost 81 percent of his shots come from behind the arc.

Only the Mavericks’ Jason Kidd is devoting a higher percentage (85) of his shots to 3-pointers this season.

But Kidd has converted just 29 percent of his 120 3-point attempts, nowhere near the 46.9 percent success rate that Novak has had (53 of 113). Through Wednesday, that left him ranked fourth in the N.B.A., behind Mike Miller of the Miami Heat (51.7 percent), Brandon Rush of the Golden State Warriors (51.1 percent) and Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics (48.6 percent).

Steve Novak right behind Ray Allen? It is hard to explain, but Novak agreeably tried to after Thursday’s team practice.

“That’s what I do,” he said of his game. “I shoot perimeter shots. When it’s there, I shoot it. When it’s not, I don’t.”

As Novak spoke to a sizable news media contingent, he noted that it was his first time answering questions in front of the padded blue wall at the Knicks’ practice facility, where interview sessions are often conducted with players with much bigger names.

So in ways big and small, Novak is arriving. He has gone from the solitude of empty gyms, the endless hours of repetitive practice, of taking aim at the basket from 23 or 24 feet away, to suddenly hearing his name chanted by fans.

He got everyone’s attention in the second half of a nationally televised game against Dallas on Feb. 19 and again on Wednesday against Cleveland, rallying the Knicks each time with a torrent of 3-pointers as Madison Square Garden erupted.

Pretty good for a player who was waived by the Spurs on Dec. 19 and picked up by the Knicks two days later.

As to where he learned to shoot so well from outside, Novak said: “I was really born into a basketball family. My dad was my high school coach. I was in the gym with him all the time and he really taught me to shoot, and I just loved being in the gym and shooting during his practices when I was just a little guy.”

Asked to augment Novak’s explanation, Knicks Coach Mike D’Antoni first resorted to humor, saying, “I hear he eats a lot of cheese.” In a more serious vein, D’Antoni praised Novak as an underrated team defender, suggesting that there was more than one dimension to his game.

What Novak does not do is use his size as a post player, a fact underlined by the meager number of free throws — 14 — he has tried since early in the 2009-10 season. He has made them all, which means he has not missed a foul shot in more than two years. On the other hand, some players take 14 free throws in a single game.

But so what. Knicks fans just want Novak to do what he is doing, to add another layer to the Jeremy Lin season.

When most of the news media contingent dispersed on Wednesday, Novak joked about just continuing to stand there. Which he did, and as he talked to the reporters who lingered, he turned a little more reflective.

“I was always coached on teams where there was other big guys or a coach that had enough perspective to let me be me,” he said. “As they say in the N.B.A., ‘Be yourself.’ ”

Knicks’ 3-point sniper has found NBA success a long distance from home

Steve Novak’s father, Brown Deer (Wisc.) High School athletic director Mike Novak, may or may not catch the whole fourth quarter of the Knicks-Bucks game at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center one week from today.
Steve Novak’s sister, Maggie, is playing a first-round state high-school playoff game that same night. Tip-off for the Divine Savior Holy Angels is 7 p.m. A 20-minute drive west in downtown Milwaukee, the Knicks face the Bucks at 7:30 p.m.
Maggie, a junior, is the youngest of Mike Novak’s four children. The elder Novak stepped down as Brown Deer’s head coach four years ago to become AD so he could watch his youngest child play. Mike Novak saw every one of Steve’s high-school games — he was the head coach for 24 years.
“We’ll follow our philosophies and go to her game first, then drive to Milwaukee,’’ Mike Novak told The Post yesterday. “That was the reason I got out of coaching. It is her time in high school to shine. I’ve seen Steve play a lot of games. We’ll stay with her.’’’
Maggie Novak isn’t the only Novak child shining on the court. It’s Steve Novak’s time to shine in the NBA. The emails and phone messages poured into Brown Deer High yesterday. Steve is the talk of the hallways again in the Milwaukee suburban school, just as Novak’s teammate, Jeremy Lin, and the Knicks are the talk of the nation.
Novak has been a giant part of the Knicks’ resurgence in the Linsanity Era, exhibiting the hottest 3-point shooting touch in the NBA these past 3 1/2 weeks. Novak drilled five 3-pointers in a six-minute span of the second half, scoring 17 points in 17 minutes to help beat the Cavaliers on Wednesday, and had the Garden crowd jubilantly chanting his name.
Mike Novak watches all the Knicks games on his league-pass package, or DVR, but has never been to the Garden. He will make it there for the first time on Easter Sunday when the Knicks host the Celtics.
“It’s real exciting around here today with the phone calls, emails, walking up the hallways,’’ Mike Novak said. “The Knicks are making a big splash around here right now. The ability was always there. I think he just needed a little more [playing] time.’’
The shooting ability can be traced to the basement of Steve Novak’s old house in Milwaukee County. An adjustable hoop was placed downstairs, with an electronic tracking device to count the number of shots. Mike Novak believes Steve was five years old on the Sunday his son hoisted 2,000 shots at the hoop with his mini basketball. At least that’s what the tracker counted.
It became more serious when Steve, from first grade on, attended his father’s high-school practices. Almost all of them. A half-court asphalt basketball court was built in the backyard, but that was mostly to attract his friends to come over and play.
“I was in that gym all the time,’’ Steve Novak said yesterday after practice. “[My father] really taught me to shoot. I just loved being in the gym with him, just shooting during his practice. I was just a little guy.’’
“He went to grade school eight miles from the practices,’’ Mike Novak recalled. “His mother would drop him off. His work ethic was unquestioned. He learned the fundamentals of form from me and to be efficient. He learned footwork from [Novak’s coach at Marquette] Tom Crean. But beyond that, his outside shooting is a gift from God because it doesn’t always develop.’’
Novak was a starter as a high school freshman, already 6-foot-8 — the height of his father, who played college ball at Carroll College in Wisconsin. Steve Novak carried his team to the state semifinals as a senior, despite two freshmen in the starting lineup, including his younger brother Chris. Mike Novak knew Steve had Division I — and NBA — potential when he dropped 41 points on the University of Wisconsin’s top recruit, Ray Nixon.
Novak chose to stay home and attend Marquette over Florida and Illinois because of the attention Crean paid him. “[He] went to almost every one of Steve’s games,’’ Mike Novak said.
During the lockout, Steve stayed in Milwaukee and worked out almost every day at the Marquette gym. When the lockout ended, Novak played it safe and re-signed with the Spurs on a non-guaranteed contract, having played 23 games in San Antonio last season.
According to a source, when Knicks interim general manager Glen Grunwald expressed interest in him soon after, Novak regretted the decision, knowing he would thrive in D’Antoni’s speedball offense reliant on the 3-pointer. The Spurs did not have big plans for Novak and a mutual decision was reached to place him on waivers, according to a source. The Knicks signed him when he cleared, becoming his fifth team in six seasons.
The Clippers were the only other team to give Novak playing time, and he played 125 games during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Jeff Van Gundy drafted Novak in Houston but did not give him extended minutes.
Why did it take so long?
“I’ve asked that question a lot myself,’’ Mike Novak said. “He’s always been that kind of shooter, it’s not something new. Certain teams have certain obligations. The Knicks’ situation, people are stepping up and taking opportunities when given them. If Steve could have planned it this way, he would have.”

Seriously, how does that happen? If you know anything at all about steve novak, it is that he is an elite shooter. well, and that he is tall, those 2 kind of go hand in hand because of how unique it is to be a big that not only CAN shoot 3's but is among the best in the game at it.

From today's Chicago Tribune:

Linsanity, meet the Novak Attack.

Jeremy Lin has revived a franchise and electrified a city while sparking a global catchphrase. Perhaps his greatest feat: resuscitating the career of former Marquette forward Steve Novak.

The fellow former Knicks reserve has averaged 12.9 points since Lin moved into the starting lineup last month, making a barrage of 3-pointers to lift his team to victories over the Mavericks and Cavaliers.

Novak, a freshman on Marquette's 2003 Final Four team, averaged 12.4 points in his college career, including 17.5 as a senior, and shot 46 percent from 3-point range. The Rockets drafted him with the second pick of the second round in 2006.

Clippers fans might remember Novak as the lanky small forward who showed impeccable form on 3-pointers in warm-ups and was featured in a Staples Center pregame video blowing out hands that were made to look as if they had caught fire. Then the games would start and Novak rarely would play, averaging 4.8 points in two seasons.

It was more of the same last season with the Mavericks and Spurs.

The Knicks claimed Novak off waivers Dec. 19 and largely sat him until Lin became a fixture in the rotation. Then the 3-point specialist was unleashed, helping the Knicks move back into playoff contention.

When he left the game Wednesday after making five 3-pointers during a comeback victory over the Cavs, the Madison Square Garden crowd erupted with chants of "We want Novak!"

Said Novak: "I'd be lying if I didn't say that was cool."
