why is that Dreads are so much more popular among football players than basketball players? Jae has got the only serious dreads i can think of in NCAA or NBA, but i don't have enough fingers toes to count the famous guys that play the other sport. Any thoughts as to why this might be?
I read somewhere that there are way more Rastafarians in football than basketball. The chilled out vibe is a nice dichotomy to their violent on-field personas.
i just think there are a lot more football players. and maybe because it provides extra cushioning for the head.
Marquette should do a promo item where they hand out "Jae Crowder dreads." That would get people to the game.
I think it's the sweat factor. Basketball has much longer sustained periods of aerobic activity than football, and the guys perspire much more. I am guessing that most guys would prefer not to have a hairstyle that can absorb a couple of quarts of sweat and would want able to rub one's head with a towel.
I just hope for the sake of those who have to hang around Jae that he has found a good way to wash that 'do after games and practicees. :P

They gave them out to students in the pit last year for the Madison game.
Alright ive decided that im going to get a pair of dreads for senior night. Any other students (or alumni) are welcome to join me.
The Eagle should wear dreads and a #1 jersey for Senior night.
I'm waitin' on Buzz in dreads
A pair of dreads?
Dreads are out of style.
Me and a friend at the MU v. Wisconsin game last year. Fully dreaded. we had the dreads long before they gave them out to students. first broke them out at the CBE in Kansas City.

That is a great idea and would be really cool if they did it.

Over the past few years I rember a few opponents. Renaldo Balkman of South Carolina. One of the players on Dayton--can't recall his name. Perhaps you could throw Buycks in there--nowhere near Crowder in terms of length, but probably on the short list. I'm sure there are a few more one could find with a bit of searching. But, you're right, it does seem to be less prominent.
It could just be numbers--there are a lot more football players than basketball. You've got 50 or so on NFL rosters, and a scholarhsip limit of 85 on NCAA teams. Meanwhile, the NBA limit is 15 and the NCAA is 13.
It also might be the fact that football players have helmets to keep hair out of their faces, whereas some basketball palyes might find it annoying to have that hair whipping around.
Didn't Kenneth Fareed (sp?) on Morehead St. have them? They upset Louisville last year in the tourney. Believe he plays for Denver now in the NBA.

you bastard.
...and the answer is yes ;D
DeMarre Carroll of Missouri had some wild dreads.
Also the PG on LSU this year (Hickey?) and I think one other player on that team. McCallum on UWM.
In the NBA there is also Marquis Daniels, Nene and formerly Chris Bosh.

Dwight didn't have dreads - he had cornrows.
God, you people are white!
I always thought it was because in football, it is harder to show your identity because your helmet really covers a lot. In football, it used to be that you could stand out by having dreads (although everyone has them now), so that people could ask, "hey, who's the guy with dreads?". In basketball, your full face is exposed, so you can just ask, "hey, who's the guy who looks like an easter island statue?" (DJO) or "hey, who is the guy who looks like he should be in fat albert's junkyard crew?" (gardner)
Well, if people are doing dreads for Crowder on Senior night that means someones got to do a really large distinguished chin for DJO.

London Warren. Pretty entertaining player for lacking much talent. Must have been the dreads.

Tommy didn't allow dreads, braids, or cornrows. Had to keep it clean. All about the image...

personally, I've always thought DJO looked like Sebulba, the pod-racer from Episode I

He was pretty good if I recall (damnit).
