Just saw the teaser for Outside the Lines coming up at 2, and they are talking about college coaches disciplining players and Buzz was one of the coaches mentioned along with Pat Knight and Mick Cronin.
Katz critical. Says if you're going to send a message, you suspend for a game, not picking and choosing halves.
Yet some just don't start a game then come in after first tv timeout. What people overlook is we only have 9 people total...you can't last a whole game with 5 players dressed!
yep.....Big East and ESPN would throw a fit if he had benched 4 guys for the entire game with only 9 guys available.
What happens if you have foul trouble or an injury? Forfeit? Play with 4?
He did it the only way possible under the circumstances.
Also, I think some of it was critical of splitting up the suspensions. However, none of these guys can form much of an opinion without knowing what happened. I believe I read Buzz say that at the start of the year, there's team rules laid out and have the corresponding penalties, and he went by that for this game. I had no problem with it because as Buzz said, if someone turns an ankle or something, to not have someone able to sub is pretty dumb, especially if this is something that's pretty minor.
I'm going to guess what the Alabama players did was much different than what our guys did. Heck, they may have skipped a class or missed a homework assignment.

This is ESPN we're talking about...when has that ever stopped them?

Well, he could have suspended two for the WVU game and two for Cincy.
But regardless, the criticisms of what Buzz decided to do are few and far between.

If Katz has his panties in a bunch, it means Buzz is doing it right.
He split up the players because there was no way we were going to have 5 guys for a half.
It would have been wrong had Buzz sat Todd in replace of 1 of the other 3. At least he kept the 3 starters suspended together making us play an entire half without our leading scorer, PG and premeir defender.
Had he switched todd and juniors suspensions that would have been more questionable.
I generally like Andy Katz, but how many major college basketball programs has he coached in his life? Buzz did what Buzz thought was right and he's the one running the basketball program. Who cares what anyone else thinks? These types of suspensions don't happen very often because most coaches wouldn't have the balls to suspend 3 starters and their sixth man for a half of any game, let alone a conference road game.
It's almost as if Buzz would have been better off (from a PR standpoint) not suspending anyone.
Todd's family got to see him start a game.
The whole we only have 9 players, so we could only suspend for a half is a bunch of bs. Just suspend them on a future date if the crime warrants it.
That said, I find it stupid people are saying a half is not enough when they don't even know what they did to deserve the punishment.

that's why katz doesn't coach-ya'll know the saying-those that can't....
By the way, about the injury thing - were they real "suspensions" or just team imposed benchings? I'm pretty sure if two guys had gotten hurt Buzz would have put one of the three "suspended" players in the game. It wasn't an official "suspension", was it?

What's the difference? Is Buzz supposed to fill out a "Suspension Form" (in triplicate) to make it official?

I was thinking the exact same thing, Sultan. If Buzz wanted to be consistent and match the suspensions of DJO and Junior earlier in the season, he could have done so and still had 7 players available for each game.
But I'm glad that the violations apparently were minor enough that he thought a half was suitable.

A question was asked earlier in the thread whether we would have played with four players if two players had been injured in the first half. I was answering "no".

So Buzz would be willing to lose two games because these four guys were 5+ minutes late? That is unfair to the 5 guys who weren't late and would put them in jeopardy of fatigue and injury even further. Problem was, it was 4 of the top 6 players in minutes played. There is no good way to handle it I guess other than to do it the way he did it and for the effect of bringing the team together for the final run.
The beauty of this all is that if Buzz relaxed the rules and did not suspend them at all, Andy (and many others with him) wouldn't even know to be critical. Instead, he punishes them and we get a story and an envigorating dialogue as to whether he was proper in his methods.
It is ridiculous.

It never should have been called a suspension. It was just a "benching".
Just ESPN making a big deal out of nothing. Same reason why they won't shut up about LBJ's all-star performance.

Yes.(see page 1,214 of the Dodd/Frank bill).
/ Apologizes and ducks head after blatant political reference.
This guy needs an email or two sent to him. How was Buzz not accountable? He apologized as soon as he got on the headset with the ESPN crew. He apologized again at the end of the interview. Again at the post game press conference. Again with a press release.

Just sent him an email. Thanks for the link, Hoop.
I just had to look up where Columbia, MO is. It's the 5th largest city in Missouri.
Leave the guy be, he's irrelevant.
