With his next victory, Buzz will tie HOF Coach Eddie Hickey for 7th place in all time MU victories at 92. With three more W's he will tie for 6th place. He needs 9 more to tie Mike Deane for 5th. He has by far achieved this accomplishment faster than any coach in MU's history.
- He has now surpassed Crean in MU winning percent: .684 vs. .664
- He will be the first MU coach to go to the NCAA's hist first four seasons
Congratulations to Coach Buzz
That sound you hear is Dr. B ducking as the Crean defenders steady their aim. Dr. Blackheart does not need my help, but let me try to preempt the attacks by noting that Dr. B did not slam TC. He just showed Buzz some well earned love. Please prove me wrong.

Unless you are referring to Crean's record after 135 games, "winning percent" isn't something you surpass - it's a constantly changing number based on cumulative wins and losses. If Buzz won his first game as head coach - and I don't know if he did or didn't - his winning percentage immediately after that game would have been 1.000 - and one could say that he "surpassed" Crean on his very first time out.
How silly and pointless, you might as well have said:

You'll have to point to the post where someone said that crean is, and forever will be, the best coach ever to work at marquette. People do say that about Al...
Rawdog: Glad you caught the silly part, but I disagree on pointless. Dr. B did not mention AL, and with good reason: his all time winning percentage is .739. Dr. B did make a direct comparison to TCs winning percentage, which is what I think could invite a wrong interpretation by some on this board. (but a different wrong interpretation than yours).
Fastest start does not mean best. It means fastest start.

he didn't mention him by name.

= Faster than Al
QuoteHe will be the first MU coach to go to the NCAA's hist first four seasons
= More than Al
Rawdog: Re-read OP: he did mention TC (and Hickey and Deane) by name. And not Al.
And, again, "fastest" does not mean best; "faster" than Al does not mean "better" than Al.

Winning percent is a relative measure of productivity...he indeed "surpassed" TC's winning percentage during this recent BE run...so with a
significant sample size of over 130 games, I think that is worthy to mention. Relative in that it can change with time as you point out, obviously. Yes, he will have hangover years like Dixon and Wright this season, but Buzz is trending well at this point in time towards the magical 5 year mark. btw, victories can go away too, see Coach Cal.
In terms of the faster or better debate...faster is just one indicator of a coach's success...in this case, Buzz hasn't screwed up his opportunity and more importantly, he has built upon it. If you look at the coaches hired in his year, he is the stud of the class, ex Coach Cal at Kentucky. "Better" is the total body of work including NCAA and conference accomplishments over time.
I am certainly not the only one mentioning Buzz's achievements:
QuoteSince arriving at Marquette Buzz Williams has put together an impressive record of 91-41. Williams record over the course of the last 3+ seasons is better than highly regarded Big East coaches Jim Calhoun (87-48) and Jay Wright (87-43). During the course of his three years at Marquette Williams has lead his team to the NCAA tournament each season and it would appear that the Golden Eagles are a lock for this year's tournament.

You re-read mine. I just said "he didn't mention him by name." When you say 'fastest of all coaches' then you are talking about a group of which Al is a member. I have no idea what 'faster doesn't mean better' means to you and don't care.
You were picking fights, with no reason, on a post that wasn't attacking crean or defending him. If any crean defender took offense to this i would have been all over them, but you didn't give them or me that chance because you decided that your 'noble' hijacking of a thread doesn't count as hijacking.
Rawdog: I see that I mis-read your reference that "he didn't mention him by name.". Sorry- my bad on that point.
Well this was a fun thread. Replace all that annoying TC talk with annoying don't talk about TC talk.
Great job Buzz! It's been a fantastic four years so far. I know I was in the minority, but I thought we'd be middle of the pack & a 7-9 seed this year. I'm glad I was very wrong. I hope he gets to 104 this year. :)
I've gotta admit, I didn't know what to expect, but it turned into an excellent 4 years with Buzz at the helm. A humble guy who cares about the whole program, and a great role model.
