Title: Did the Big East dodge a bullet on TCU?
Post by: Dawson Rental on February 15, 2012, 07:54:08 PM
TCU while readying itself for the Big 12 this fall had a boo boo involving the football team.

"TCU drug bust includes 4 football players.
The bust came just one day after a thrilling overtime victory by the men's basketball team over a ranked opponent and less than 24 hours after TCU released its football schedule for next season, its first in the Big 12 Conference."

And my favorite quote.
"Horn and Johnson scoffed at the Feb. 1 team drug test ordered by Patterson, police said. Brock allegedly told an undercover officer that he failed the surprise test 'for sure', but that it wouldn't be a problem because there 'would be about 60 people screwed.'

Horn had looked through the football roster and 'said there were only 20 people that would pass the test on the team', Brock said, according to the warrant."

Seems to me Bucky should ax to have TCU vacate their Rose Bowl victory vs UW.

I was never enamored with the whole TCU membership in the first place.  Their basketball team has never been any good.

in regards to their football team, sure they had a good year or two, but before that they had a whole string of absolutely horrible years.  i beleive they had a number of zero win seasons if I recall.   Wow have 1-2 good years and you get a BCS invite.  Not deserving.  feel the same way about Butler Bball.

Huh?  2 good years for Butler?  In the last 10 years they have averaged 25 wins per season.  Their NCAA Tournament success is topped by a VERY few teams.  Pretty foolish comment, especially considering Marquette received an invite to the Big East with far less success, both in the very very recent past (last 2-5 years) and recent past (last 10 years).

Butler:
10-11: 28-10, NCAA Final, 5-1 NCAA Tournament
09-10: 33-5, NCAA Final, 5-1 NCAA Tournament
08-09: 26-6, First Round, 0-1 NCAA Tournament
07-08: 30-4, Second Round, 1-1 NCAA Tournament
06-07: 29-7, Sweet Sixteen, 2-1 NCAA Tournament
05-06: 20-13, NIT
04-05: 13-15
03-04: 16-14
02-03: 27-6, Sweet Sixteen, 2-1 NCAA Tournament
01-02: 24-6, NIT
Totals: 249-86, 15-6 NCAA Tournament record, 2 National Championship games, 2 Sweet Sixteens, and a 2nd Round

For comparison's sake, Marquette's last 4 years in Conference USA (slightly better than the Horizon, but not a ton, and post-season success is much more important):
04-05: 19-12, NIT
03-04: 19-12, NIT
02-03: 23-6, Final Four, 4-1 NCAA Tournament
01-02: 25-7, First Round, 0-1 NCAA Tournament
Total: 86-37, one Final Four, 4-2 NCAA Tournament record

And in the past 10 years, Marquette's NCAA Tournament record is 8-8 with 1 Final Four, 1 Sweet Sixteen, and 2 Second Round appearances.  I wish I could say that we had the success Butler's basketball program has over the past decade (much more than 1 or 2 years of fluke success), but we haven't.

As for TCU football over the past decade (again, more than 1 or 2 years of fluke success), their records have been:
11: 11-2, Bowl Win
10: 13-0, BCS Bowl Win
09: 12-1, BCS Bowl Loss
08: 11-2, Bowl Win
07: 8-5, Bowl Win
06: 11-2, Bowl Win
05: 11-1, Bowl Win
04: 5-6
03: 11-2, Bowl Loss
02: 10-2, Bowl Win
Totals: 103-23, 7-2 in Bowl games, including 1-1 in BCS Bowls
Average of 10-2 season.

Not sure what you're talking about at all.

If the Big East dodged a bullet with TCU, then they went Jonestown with accepting SMU's basketball team.

Roooooough.

Hey SMU did get the 7 footer that Buzz wanted, forcing him to settle for the kid who can't get into a game for his HS team.
