Title: What to watch for in the Big East over the next week or so...
Post by: muguru on February 12, 2012, 07:12:59 PM
MU is actually in better shape then many may realize in terms of getting a double bye. For example, if MU wins their next two....vs. Uconn and Rutgers , and UL loses two more(next three are, Cuse, @DePaul, and @ Cincy(the night after MU plays Rutgers), MU will clinch(basically) no worse then 4th in the BE, and they could do that before they even head to WVU on the 24th. At that point, the ONLY three teams (realistically-I don't count SF as they will fall off and not be a factor) that could finish ahead of MU are: Cuse, ND, and Georgetown. To this point, MU has clinched no worse then 10th in the BE, and should Seton Hall lose either @ Home vs. SJU on Tuesday, or @ Cincy next Saturday, and WVU loses @ Pitt Thursday, MU will clinch no worse then 7th if Uconn should somehow lose to DePaul Wednesday, or if MU beats them next Saturday.

Either way, with a UL loss to Cuse tomorrow night, MU will safely have a 2 game lead with 3 to play if they just beat Uconn next weekend(and Rutgers, but that's a gimme).

I don't get it.  No God, don't let Rutgers be a gimmie?

Calling Rutgers (or anyone, especially in the Big East) a gimme.

I once gave F*ckin' a gimme. He putted anyway (hard of hearin'), and missed it.

If UL loses tomorrow MU will have a 3 game lead. They own the head to head over UL.

If we go 3-2 down the stretch it would be hard for us to not get the double bye.  Even if L'Ville wins tonight, they still finish the season at Syracuse.

Is this the first time we've been close to a double bye?

Desperately want the #2 or #3 -- not the #4. Getting ready to pull the trigger on flying in for the BE Tourney -- #4 plays at 2pm. #2 and #3 are night games which would mean I could fly in that day without getting up at 5am. For those interested, Airtran flights are cheap, hotels aren't bad either.

The double bye has only been around for two or three years.  I think we placed 5th, giving us one bye, in the first year the double bye was in effect.

We had the 4th seed once, when Georgetown lost their last game of the season to South Florida, who had not won a conference game to that point. Georgetown won their 5th seed game and then beat us. I think it was the first year we were in the Big East. At that time it was not a double bye though, because the bottom four teams did not get invited.

What I am most interested in is who we get matched up with in our first game. Assuming we get a double bye we will be playing someone who has already played a game. Three things factor in this game. The other team could be tired. However, the other team will not have first game jitters and will have momentum, because they already won a playoff game.

We are a team that historically does worse that 3rd straight game so the fewer game we have to play to get to the ship is a very, very good thing.
