Title: Thanks ESPN...
Post by: madtownwarrior on February 09, 2012, 07:49:28 PM
I am sure glad to follow along as KenPom #66 Murray State takes a 1 point lead on KenPom #203 Tennessee State.

I am riveted that a decent team from a crap conference (26th best conference) can clean up on stated crap conference and go undefeated.

I hope the undefeated team is opposite MU in the NCAA bracket when released.

So are u suggesting they shouldn't cover the only undefeated team in CBB? Kenpom had three NCAA 4 seeds in the top 10 last year. Kenneth also has wisco at #4 and SLU at #10. It's not a end all ranking system IMO.

When your strength of schedule is 278th in the country, being undefeated is irrelevant...

Just playing their schedule, they can't control how terrible their conference is. They won at Memphis, beat Dayton and S. Miss; some quality wins. My guess is they're a tough team, they shouldn't be ignored.

Have not seen a single thread on Murray State on this board nor any conversation at the "watercooler" - on't htink many are interested - unless it is to see them lose to end the coverage.   It's a joke - the best team in the 25th best conference goes undefeated - big deal..

Then why do you think they are reporting on it?  For the hell of it?

Really exciting last minute...Murray State gets within one, Tenn State steals an inbound pass, fouled but miss both free throws, Murray's best player drives but gets it stolen with 3.5 to go, Tenn State makes the free throws to get up by three and wins by four.  Yeah, I think they were overrated and I was waiting for the loss, but you're telling me that wasn't worth seeing?  I was-and kind of am-still excited for the Bracketbuster matchup between Murray State and St. Mary's.

We'll see when they play St. Mary's, they're undefeated in the West Coast conference and 22-2 overall. I think winning at Memphis and being undefeated says a lot. I went back through 2004 and there hasn't been a 1 loss team during that time, only a handful of 2 loss teams.

So you would be ok if Marquette lost to UWGB - rated higher than Tennessee State?

just cause they have one loss does not mean crap - they have played nobody

that's the equivalent of taking MU out of the Big East and putting them in the WIAC, going 22-1 and saying "they only lost to UWGB"...

Canaan is an absolute stud and can carry MSU like Bird did ISU.  His supporting cast isn't as strong but I will point out that the mid majors had two F4 teams last season,  MSU is not a mid, but Canaan could carry them some distance, but I could see a S16 if a higher seed.

Whether or not one thinks Murray State was a "legit" unbeaten team is irrelevant.

They were the last unbeaten team and have been for weeks. The fact that they were in a nail-biter, putting their record on the line, was news. ESPNU did exactly what it should have done, and I enjoyed watching the ending of that game a hell of a lot more than I would have enjoyed watching halftime and the opening minutes of the second half of Northwestern-Iowa.

It was a story and ESPN covered it. If you didn't like it, you should have turned to one of the 1,000 other channels in your cable system.

Hey, hey, hey... that's my family's school you're talking about.  Just because I broke ranks after four generations and went to Marquette doesn't mean that I don't still have a soft spot for the ol' Racers.

I did enjoy Murray State and Popeye Jones battling Oliver Miller and Arkansas in the Milwaukee Regional a number of years back...

If we played Murray State's schedule, I wouldn't like to lose to a team like that, but I still wouldn't expect us to go undefeated.  Tough to get up for every game, even against teams that aren't very good.  The biggest indication for me that Butler was "for real" two years ago rather than the overrated mid-major who won a few preseason games was that they managed to not lose a single Horizon game - for two or three years prior they would always drop 2-3 games to Horizon teams and get overseeded in the tournament.  Last night may have exposed Murray as a team like that, rather than the Butler team of two years ago.

I was interested, though I wasn't watching any college basketball last night.  I was really rooting for them, especially since they're not a threat to win the NCAA tournament and this would be an accomplishment they could savor forever.  If they had managed it, that would have been a tremendous accomplishment.  No team has entered the NCAA tournament with no losses since UNLV in 1991.

People who say we would go undefeated with that schedule are missing an obvious point.  Maybe we would, but if we played that schedule and were never on TV do you think we would have been able to recruit the players we have?  Of course not.  Going undefeated is special regardless of the level of your conference.

The odd thing is, I'm guessing they have just one more mulligan.  By that I mean if they lose two more games in the regular season, they will probably have to win their conference tournament just to make the NCAA field.  Now that would be a terrible turn of events.

It is quite impressive that they have gone undefeated for this long and Canaan is a great player, but Murray State was definitely overrated.  There is not a single team in their conference (besides them) ranked in the RPI top 150.  By comparison, the only team in the Big East not in the RPI top 150 is DePaul, who is at 177.  Tennessee State has a 13-10 record overall and is 181 in the RPI and won at Murray State.  Murray State was ranked ahead of Duke, Kansas, Georgetown and Michigan State in the coaches poll.  No way they are better than those teams.

I'd be somewhat surprised to see them lose 2 more so I think they are pretty safe.  But they'll take a huge drop in the rankings.  Maybe #23 next week?  Anybody have a guess?

I'm not buying Harvard either.  Although I could see them pulling an upset in the tournament.
