Title: To those who keep track
Post by: MU Avenue on February 06, 2012, 09:16:36 PM
We are again losing at halftime, tonight to DePaul, which is 11-11, 2-8 and in 15th place in the 16-team Big East Conference.

In how many games this season have we been winning at halftime?

Slow starts and more slow starts, although that was a nice run at the end of the first half.

We have been winning at half only three times in Big East play

How pissed are you right now? That next loss is going to be a little longer.

What I'd really like to know if how often we're winning at 13:07 in the first half; and 4:17 in the first half; and 18:21 of the second half; and 11:49 of the second half; and 3:33 of the second half.  Those stats are equally important, so please do a little research and post those for me.

Thanks.

So I take it that Marquette would vote NO if the BIG EAST decided to implement a CBA game point system?

Based on recent performance, if the team wasn't in a double-digit deficit by the 10:00 mark in the first half, I would instruct them to sit down on defense, literally, until they were.  Then, I'd sit back, watch my team's furious comeback, and kick back in my office after the game with my only concern being where I would put the national championship trophy in a couple months.

I remember when my beloved Rockford Lightning would win the first, second, and third quarters yet lose the game.  Those were the days...

Love to watch Marquette turn it on in the second half!  This team is really exciting to watch as they play to win!

Some would take this as a positive that this team can fight through adversity and never quits.   Some would take it as a reason to complain.     Glass half full, glass half empty.

I seem to remember us leading quite handily at Georgetown.

I know there is a pattern but I don't think we were losing because of a "slow start".  I think Depaul as getting really lucky.  It seemed liek everything was going in.

Yes, the stretch of last night's game that frustrated me wasn't the start -- DePaul was throwing in wild 3-pointers, bank shots from the ft line and all kinds of crazy stuff. The stretch that pissed me off came later when we were getting killed on the boards and beaten to every loose ball in falling behind by 12. Thankfully, DJO took over before halftime to get us close, Buzz cleaned things up at halftime, and our lads started playing right!

Agree.   I was actually laughing at those early 3's as well as that 4 pt play.   And I was frustrated when DePaul made their seocndary run in the first half, but I never really go the sense that we weren't going to win the game.

This is terrible news for MU's first half RPI and Pomeroy rankings.

Will it affect their first half recruiting?

Good point.   I had forgotten how much the tournament committee weighs half-time scores when determining seeds.

I applaud your adding a little bit of sugar to help the sour whine go down.

In MU's defense however, their first-half SOS is #1 in the nation.  Still, you can't put half a stick of lipstick on one side of the pig.

Man, you guys are harsh.  Of course we're all happy with 20-5, but there is no good reason why we fall behind early every single time.  I find it curious more than anything.

How about this.   A lot of other teams know they have to match MU's energy.   They come out completely jacked.   They fly around the floor making every play.   For the first few minutes, that explosion of energy is more than what MU play at for 40 minutes.   Eventually, they come back to earth and MU's relentless style eventually forces them into mistakes and into playing MU's style.   MU chases them down and then beats them as they are unable to play mistake free for 40 minutes.
DePaul forced MU into 4 turnover in the first 3 minutes.   MU committed 4 more over the last 37 minutes.   DePaul rained ridiculous 3's at the beginning, couldn't sustain.     MU had ND in the exact same spot with 10 minutes to go, but ND got hot and rode their home cooking down the stretch while MU uncharacteristically went cold.
I, too, would like to see MU dominate for 40 minutes.   It isn't going to happen very often.   I am thoroughly enjoying watching a team that refuses to quit and never believes it is beaten.

Buzz strikes me as the type of coach who has a million ideas and numbers and strategies bouncing around in his head while preparing for a specific game. When the game gets going, he's able to focus and trim those concepts down to a few major points and make the necessary adjustments based on how the game is being played and what the opposition is doing/trying to do. IOW, I think Buzz is much better at in-game adjustments than he is at game-planning right now. That doesn't mean he's a poor game planner or that his strategy is to "tank" the first 6-8 minutes of every game. I just think he's the type of person who can get lost in his own thoughts (ever hear him interviewed?  :)) but excels when he has a few things to really focus in on.

Finally, we have someone here -- CTWarrior -- who can step back and see reality, without being offended that others see it, too.

Why are certain people here so bothered by the facts?

Why are so many here so ridiculously defensive?

And why do so many people here try so hard and so unsuccessfully to be amusing?

CTWarrior said it well: Marquette has an impressive record this season -- 20-5 -- despite the fact that it falls behind early in almost every game, sometimes by a lot and sometimes to seemingly inferior teams that do surprisingly well against it.

As CTWarrior has written, it is "curious," indeed.

No need for certain of you to respond to this with tired, old "whine" jokes, like those that my 12-year-old niece makes. People still make whine/wine jokes?
