Title: On the bright side
Post by: CTWarrior on February 04, 2012, 03:05:00 PM
Jamail Jones finally got an extended run.  His performance was a mix of good and bad (probably more bad than good), but I still get the feeling this kid will be fine when he gets regular minutes.

Blue also a mix of good and bad, but is looking like he belongs at this level.

Not a lot else positive to say.

...at least CBS pre-empted the end of the game, so I didn't have to watch that syrup of ipecac.

A big part of this game was Cannaughton v Jones.  Cannaughton is not a big contributor to what they do, but obviously he killed us by making mostly open 3's.  Jones, on the other hand, missed a couple layups in the first half.  Also Crowder got him wide open for a 3 and it rattled out.  Then, shortly thereafter Jones passed up a wide open 3 from the top of the key.  They had a role player step up and play big.  We did not.

I am. It blaming Jones for the loss.  Others could have stepped up as well.  I just thought there were things there for him early that he could have taken advantage of to get him rolling and he did not.  Connaughton did.

Plenty of blame to go around. point blank misses at the basket ,shots in and run out, terrible passing decisions, etc. Don't blame Jamail he's not supposed to carry the team

Sorry.  Was supposed to say I am not blaming Jones for the loss.

Jamil's inside misses are definitely something that comes with experience, of which he has little.  But did manage to get some today.  He has the ability to finish those, just have to hope that if we have to call his number more he can take advantage and continue to improve.
Title: Only silver lining is good play from Blue, Cadougan and Jones

In these situations I always go back to Brad Stevens quote that in 30 games you are going to be enept 5 times – and you aren't really that bad – and everything is going to fall 5 games – and you aren't that good.
One of those days.

The only silver lining I see is some of the guys stepping up.

We know our seniors can dominate, so as much as I hate to see Jae and DJO struggled that badly on CBS, we know they can dominate.

I was at least glad to see Vander Blue have a third straight great game, and Junior and Jamail play so well – we need those three to really gain confidence for the stretch run.  And while you are correct that Jamail certianly missed a couple of easy shots, I am happy that he really seemed to know where to be and was getting to the ball and making plays.  i believe if he can do that for a couple of more games, he will start to finish a lot more regularly.  We need him and Jamil to contribute if Gardner is out for any length of time.

My biggest concern from the game is Mayo.  As great as he looked, he does seem to be losing confidence and we need him to contribute.  Anderson had some chances to grab rebounds and really looked uncomfortable to me too – I know he probably just doesn't have enough minutes to get in a flow.

Further on the bright side we continued to play hard and hustle. Didn't see anybody hanging his head.

I agree on good moments for Jones.  He had one of his better games of the season against a good team at their place.  This kind of game could give him the confidence he needs going into a critical part of our schedule.

The second half obviously sucked but it was nice to see Jones play some quality minutes out there.  And, another brightside is no injuries.  I swear I was waiting for Jamil Wilson to go down with an injury in this game.  It is like we are not meant to have 4-5's play for more than half of a season.    :'(

Agree on the Jamail compliments. I think he played very well, and am encouraged that he was in the perfect position for those missed bunnies, not discouraged that he wasn't able to put them home. And the dunk was a sick example of the athleticism he can bring to the table.

In the grand scheme of things, if Jamail can keep improving and put himself in the position to do good things like he did today, I think the depth he provides moving forward could end up outweighing this loss.
