Title: Marquette was TOUGH today
Post by: CTWarrior on January 28, 2012, 01:53:17 PM
Villanova came out on fire, and we couldn't do anything right.  Even when we righted the ship and began our comeback, we made mistake after mistake but still kept coming.  I know Villanova is not great, but that is a nice win on the road when you play lousy but win anyway.  Showed some real toughness today.

Agreed.  Showed a lot of character.  Everytime MU came back, either MU had some turnovers or Nova made some big baskets to stem the run.  MU just regrouped and did it again.  Happened when we cut it to 13, then to 10, then to 8, then back to 10 again, then to 5, then back to 10 again, then back to 7, then back to 3, then even, then the lead and then back to 0 again.

I mentioned in another thread that this and the Louisville game were why I was pleased with the effort MU put forth at Syracuse.  They didn't close the deal that day, but as I stated then, they learned from it and it would come into play the rest of the year.  It has.

During this winning streak DJO and Crowder have stepped it up a notch, especially today with Junior and Mayo not having their best day.  DJO and Jae will be missed next year and I don't have a clue how MU will make up for their loss.

Next one in.  That seems to be the attitude Buzz is instilling in the program.  They pass the torch.  Started with the amigo's passing it to Lazar, who passed it to Jimmy, who passed it to DJO and Jae.  Someone will be that person.  And I guarantee that during the year, we will have posts complaining about the lack of leadership ...   ;)

Blue free throws were clutch. Miss a few of those and we could be on the other side.

Wow what a great comeback. DJO was beyond enormous for us. I wasn't too nervous going down by 10+ early but the way they stuck with the lead was great.

I don't know if I'm more proud of MU or myself.. having to DVR the game with not knowing anything (although the last 30 sec got cut off).

The Three Amigos looked irreplaceable, but Cubillan and Acker stepped up to keep us competitive and playing in March. Lazar looked irreplaceable, but Crowder was able while DJO and JFB improved on solid seasons. Jimmy looked irreplaceable, but a combination of Blue, Wilson, and better play down low from Crowder has helped us move on and be better. And while DJO and Crowder look irreplaceable, both Wilson and Mayo are showing promise as replacements, and I'm confident Buzz will have his guys ready to play and compete come next November.

I have yet to see someone be irreplaceable. Yes, we miss guys, yes, it sucks that they graduate, but it happens everywhere, and every time it's happened under Buzz, someone has been there to step up. I have no doubt the same will be the case next year.

All were pure as well.  That impressed me the most.

Very tough today.  Beating any BE team when they get up 18 at home and are still up 10 with 15 minutes to go is really, really hard to do.

Not really.  We had 'em where we wanted 'em.

That is the second road game in a row where we got down early, because the only thing DJO could do was turn the ball over. Of course once he made the techical free throw he was off to the races. You never want to send a scorer to the line when he is haaving an off day. Usually, all they need is to see the ball go through once to get going. The technical was hugh for MU.

Exactly.  I can't say I was happy we started that way, and I didn't think for certain we'd win, but I never really felt that concerned.

My attitude at 28-10 was "well, either we are going to do it again or this is the clunker that we are due for.   Whatever."

I actually thought Buzz might have put him on the line just for that reason.  He has used Devante, Jae, DJO and JWill earlier this season in similar situations.  I think he wanted to get him on track.

+1, DJO was a different guy after that.

Yeah, because Mayo, Blue, Wilson, Gardner, Junior haven't shown crap yet.  ::) ::) ::) ::) (oh,yeah, we are getting Chris back, too)

every year the comment of "how will they be replaced" is made and it seems every year they are.

+1, i have been so impressed with J Wilson's play.  even today when he had foul problems, and didn't shoot it all that well, his hustle seems to make a lot of things happen for mu.  i thought he was going to be soft, and he's proven he has no issues banging around under the hoop.  i think mu will be just fine next year, and in 13-14 when we return everyone but junior, and add the recruits we have coming in we could be scary good if the player development is there.

This is so tired; the Helen Lovejoy-esque, "OH, HOW WILL WE SCORE POINTS NEXT YEAR?!"

We have a great class coming in, Mayo, Blue, OTule, Gardner back.  We'll be fine.  To repeat, we'll be fine.  Somehow, we'll score points, and win basketball games.

Complete slight of DJO and Crowder at halftime of Seton Hall-Loserville talking about the best seniors in the league.
