Title: Duke has a *GREAT* student section....
Post by: GGGG on January 24, 2012, 01:24:25 PM
...right???

http://dukechronicle.com/article/low-attendance-forces-duke-athletics-sell-student-seats

"Student attendance at men's basketball games has fallen consistently over the last five years, even dropping after Duke won its fourth national championship in 2010. This season, approximately 650 undergraduates have attended each game, 150 fewer than during the 2008-09 season. As a result, Duke Athletics has begun to sell an increasing number of general admission tickets in the student section on a regular basis."

Although Duke's teams remain very strong, it does seem that the hype has faded a bit. That's not to say that ESPN doesn't still promote the hell out of the Dukies, it just doesn't seem as bad as it was say in the J.J. Redick era.

Also, I remember reading an article maybe two years ago about the growing backlash in regards to the Cameron Crazies from the general Duke student body. Like most things, overexposure at some point will lead to a decline in popularity.

They do play in a glorified version of the Old Gym.

Duke enrollment - 14,726 (6,526 undergrads and 8,220 grads) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_University
MU Enrollment - 11,599 (8,012 undergrads and 3,587 grads) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquette_University

650 student and dropping?  that is less than 10% of the undergrad population or 4% of total enrollment.

Could you imagine this board if MU saw its students attendance at 650 and dropping?  The collective heads of this board would explode into a million pieces arguing that we are the worst school in the country and should drop basketball all together.

In an article on Deadspin they mentioned that tickets in the student section were $65 a game. That could have something to do with it.

Isn't that about 0.1% of the cost of a Duke education.  Don't they all come from "1% families?"

Very interesting report. I'd like to hear the numbers for other "powerhouse" schools. I have a feeling MU wouldn't be too far away from the top 10 in percentage of student attendance, if not better.

Dang.

Even *I* would not have paid that much for a MU game as an undergrad! I'd be forced to pick and choose, if that!

I take it back then.

But they're still snobs. lol

I guess it's hitting their successful women's program too.

I haven't seen this deadspin article, but the Duke article says the tickets are $65 when they're sold to the public as GA, not when they're sold to students.

It costs about $15 for a seat in the party section at the BC. I would take that over duke anyday of the week.

Yeah, the deadspin article just summarizes the Duke article. It's $65 for non-students to buy single tickets as GA.

In fact, it seems like they might be free for students:

QuoteStudents without season ticket cards can still gain admission to many games via the walk-up line. Students and spouses/partners in the walk-up line must present a valid Duke ID or Spouse/Partner ID for admission. Admission from the walk-up is space-permitting and not guaranteed to any student. Groups may be split-up due to space constraints.

Nothing about "buying a ticket."

At $65 for the general public, I'm guessing they go pretty quick.  I've only paid for Duke tickets a couple times, and they were nearly $200.

Edit: ok, just saw that it says Iron Dukes and football and women's basketball ticketholders get offered the tickets first, they've yet to make it to the general public.

Didn't notice that the $65 was for nonstudents. That changes things.

If you can afford Duke tuition, you can afford the tickets.

They do play in a glorified version of the Old Gym my dimly lit 6th grade gym, seating on one half, stage on the other.

If the student tickets are indeed free then there should be no excuse to no fill up the section every game.  I agree that every time I watch Duke on TV it looks packed, so the Athletic deparment must do a good job estimating exactly how many general admission tickets to sell and fill the place up.

This ties in nicely with what was said yesterday.  Not everyone on campus (Duke or MU or anywhere else) cares about athletics, the athletes, etc.  This is why you see editorials like you did from the MU Tribune.  We are in a bias minority here that cannot understand how the majority of students feel about athletics and sometimes the treatment of athletes.  It would behoove all of us to take a step back sometimes and understand how other people view athletics.  This is not to suggest their view is right or better, but different.  Nor is our view right or wrong, but certainly different.

The comments from the Duke article capture it well as there is a cross section of Duke students who find it an outrage that the games are not selling out while others have no interest at all.

When the MU student section is filled up to the rafters and all wearing gold for big games, it's as impressive as anyplace in the country.  Unfortunately that only happens a few times a year, but hopefully it will be filled for Cincy and Georgetown.

But you also have to remember that Duke is a very small arena, with the student seats right up to the sideline.  Also, the camera angles make every place look more packed than it really is, especially when you have students climbing over each other trying to get on TV.

QuoteCrazies Disappoint
by DBR, January 25th, 2012 | Main |
We didn't get a chance to link to this last night because the other stuff took most of our time, but as you've heard by now, Crazies are not packing the gym lately.  We've talked about this off and on for a while now. It's astounding to us that anyone would pass on a free ticket to an extraordinarily high level sporting event, but there it is.  Part of it is bound to be that right now teams like Wake, Georgia Tech and BC aren't going to excite anyone.

We don't know what the solution is, but as we've said repeatedly, if you guys don't want them, there are plenty of people who do.  And once serious money gets involved, you'll have a hard time getting lost seats back.
