Didn't hear the post game but I guess Buzz complimented Mayo's D on Gibbs. I thought Mayo was a big liability on D; fouling a three-point shooter is a no-no, Mayo did it twice. I would have shuttled him in on O with Vander on D.
He worked hard, but Gibbs was a beast today. Similar to Juan in that he worked his butt off, but not necessarily always in a smart way. Freshman.
I think Todd did a pretty good job today, but a bit surprised that Blue did not get the assignment, he is as much a lockdown defender as Mayo is.

blue was riding the bench today...didn't see the floor much in the 2nd half until todd fouled out, and even then buzz went with gardners for the 1st pos. as it was offensive.

Buzz was afraid Blue would twice foul Gibbs on a 3 and crazed fans would storm the court and tear him limb from limb. He knew that if Mayo did it, it would just be a "freshman mistake."
Gibbs is an outstanding player. He got his points but Mayo was making him work. Sometimes that's all you can do. Not to mention, there were times where Mayo was solely in charge of Gibbs (i.e. he had no help side responsibilities). When a player isn't great on D rotations, it makes sense to assign him to the other team's best player and tell him to stay in his pocket. Good call by Buzz. Good execution by the D.
Mayo only fouled him shooting a 3 once; the refs blew the other call.
There was a series in the 1st half where Mayo was really riding Gibbs. Gibbs was gettting a little PO'd about it. Mayo played decently on D (but for the fouls on the 3 attempts). Gibbs, though, had an unbelievable game. He absolutely abused DJO several times. Blue was only on him a few possessions. I agree with the comment above, I would have thought Blue would have drawn that assignment.
Gibbs had a career best in points. I don't see how Mayo stopped him at all.
I thought that was another time this year Buzz fell asleep. Isn't Blue supposed to be MU's best defender? Why would he not be playing more on the only Pitt player who could score. I just didn't understand Mayo with 4 fouls guarding Gibbs late in the second half.
I realize Gibbs made a few unreal shots but once again someone has a career high against MU.
DJO was definitely abused today by Gibbs.

maybe you fell asleep. i thought mayo did a nice job on him. he got many of his points in situations when they put him in a pick and pop or ball screen situation and mayo switched off of him. on numerous occassions mayo was always effective at not allowing him to catch the ball. perhaps buzz' belief is to man up on the other teams best player, but not put so much of an emphasis on him that it allows the other players to get hot and gain confidence. i think 3 turnovers in 15 min. for blue today was unacceptable to buzz as he knew the type of low scoring game it would be. my guess is buzz has tried a lot of different things to get blue going on offense and today he tried the bench.
Mayo frustrated Gibbs much of the second half and, yes, the three was a bad foul at a bad spot. That being said, Mayo was in Gibbs' grill any time he was assigned to him. As Buzz has said, and it was seen today, Mayo does a great job guarding defenders "before the catch." Gibbs made some crazy shots and the reason they weren't easy looks was because Mayo was on his hip. DJO was pretty bad against him.
I think it was more Gibbs then poor defense. He was hitting everything he put up. Sometimes it's just a guys day and you have to tip your hat.
Exactly. And it could have been worse had Mayo not flustered him off the ball. Loved how physical Todd is and how he doesn't back away from anything.
Blue rarely draws the opponents best guard, I'm confused by that. Why would he not guard him every series? DJO was just awful.

Because in another thread you said he is not very good at basketball. If he is not, why would you want him to guard the opponents best guard?

Duh! Because the only way you can make a positive contribution to a basketball team is by scoring. Try to keep up.

Nice summary.
For sure, Ashton is the most talented Bee Gee.
It seemed similar to me the defensive assignment Buzz threw to DJO and even JFB last year. Nice to see the faith in the next generation.
I think Todd did a good job on Mayo, even drew an offensive foul on Taylor (?) on the baseline as he stuck to Gibb's hip and caught an elbow to the upper body.
This probably was more of a Buzz "Jedi Mind Trick" to pump up Todd's confidence as we're going to need another legit scorer for the run in March.

Well relatively speaking he's not....when you want admit you were wrong about him let me know, a month ago I correctly predicted he'd perform as he's performing and you jumped down my throat. If I'm not right then buzz obviously doesnt know basketball. Look at his minutes and stats vs. last year.
My point is, if he is as good a defender as reported, why is he not guarding the best opposing player? Pretty simple question.
Mayo's the real deal. He's skilled offensively and defensively and plays under control. Would like to see him start and/or get more minutes in future games. We are a better team when Mayo's on the court.

Mayo is not a very good defender off the ball. He's too slow to help, he reaches too much and he often finds himself out of position on rotations. Blue is better than Mayo in that regard (as well as rebounding and distributing). When Buzz needed offense, he put in Mayo. When he wanted D, he put in Blue. However, in the last 2 games Buzz has had Mayo face guard the opposing team's best perimeter player and given him no other responsibilities on defense. That helps to negate his lackluster off the ball D and also keeps his scoring skills on the court for more minutes. It's obviously easier to put an average defender in that roll than it is to put a poor offensive player into a scoring roll. Therefore, Mayo's minutes have increased and Blue's have decreased.
You know that as fact or speculation? I ask because it was pretty clear that Gibbs was the only scoring option and when mayo was out and blue was in DJO guarded the ball. Seems odd, especially considering DJO is pretty bad on-the-ball defender.
