Title: First half treading water
Post by: tower912 on January 11, 2012, 08:19:37 PM
Having DJO, Jae and JWilson all on the bench was tough.   The rest of the team did a great job of treading water through the end of the first half.   DG had a great game on the offensive end, but not so much on the defensive end in the first half.     Most of his points game on dump offs and putbacks.   And that is OK.      Surviving the last 10 minutes of the first half was the key.

Stayed with our recent MO of one good half, one bad.  Fortunately SJU wasn't that good in half 1 to build up a lead.  We looked helpless when both DJO and Crowder were on the bench.  Came together on both ends of the floor in second half and played very well.

I think Buzz did a good job spotting DJO and Crowder after 2 fouls to keep in touch.  Crowder scared me with that wild arm swing blocked shot with about 5 to go in the 1st half and Buzz got him out right after that.

I don't know how to judge the first half.  The officials took Crowder out of the game early.  Junior and DJO soon thereafter, followed by JWilson.  At times, the 5 on the floor were DWilson, JJ, Anderson, Blue and Gardner.  I am not so sure MU played a bad first half, but just wanted to get to the half without more foul trouble.

I really wasn't worried at halftime. No one had more than 2 fouls and St. John's isn't deep at all, which means you can grind them down in the second half. They are a perfect case study in why you're better off when your bench goes to 8-9 guys. I also thought we played horribly in the first half and were still only down by 1. Didn't see any way that we'd continue that poorly, or that they'd continue that well. Glad I was right about that.

Crowder took Crowder out of the game early.  His first foul was a good call and then he reached in on a guy going up for a layup - whether he touched him or not that's going to get called a lot of the time.

Alot of those calls are not made by the officials as the game goes on.  Early on, when the officials want to demonstrate control, yes.  But, the 2nd was a cheapie.  First was actually caused by Gardner's poor d.  I agree that was a foul.  I was surprised, especially on a made basket, that the 2nd was called.

Without making it too big a deal, Crowder was lazy getting back in transition and Achiuwa basically beat him to the spot to receive the pass for the lay up. Crowder then had to quickly get to Achiuwa before realizing he couldn't contest the shot, but by then it looked as though he was reaching to stop Achiuwa, which I think led the ref to blow his whistle. Nothing big, but I think that's why it was called. If Crowder got back, no transition bucket and no foul.

I think my phraseology may have been off.  I agree with what you said.  I think the foul was a cheapie, or in the terms of Bill Raftery, a nickel and dimer.  It was a foul.  Just one that other times in that same game was not called.

There were quite a few questionable calls last night, especially in the first half.  The four charging fouls against MU could have gone the other way.  It seems that different refs call these fouls differently - either charging or blocking.   The refs definitely controlled the game in the first half and took MU out of it for a while.

Also, noticed in general a lot traveling doesn't get called anymore.  This seems to be a trickle down from the NBA, where refs now allow an extra step consistently.  And, carrying the ball (palming) is allowable, where it used to be called.

+1.  There were two obvious travels that the refs just let go.

Agree on the charges/blocks.  I hate seeing that ref who just loves to hear his own whistle, flails his arms for 3 seconds, then makes the Off charge call.  Ok buddy we get it-you saw it and you made the call.

I thought the charging calls all night were, for the most part, wrong.  I include the ones that benefit MU.  It just seems that call is so differently interpreted, as you state.  I almost wish they would do away with it entirely.  Don't know how you do that, but the inconsistency is bothersome.

As for traveling, they stopped calling that a few years ago.  If I want to see an NBA game, I will go to one.  I hate that college is laxing the way they call the game to make it look more like the NBA.
