Heard the legends, never my bar of choice. Somewhere around 86, a young man died after falling and hitting his head on the sidewalk outside the Lanche.
Not my fave, either, but I did spend a night or 100 there over the years. I never once saw anybody do the naked slide thing. I believe it happened because so many said they saw it, but there was so much glass on the floor it probably led to many trips to Mt. Sinai Hosp.

Wow. Foggy memory lane. Never personally witnessed one. Seems to me that the only time I went to the Lanche was when money was particularly low. Somehow the Gym and Ardmore were more 'upscale'. Still can't get used to calling them Caffrey's and Murphy's.
In my day, the Frosh bar was Grunts. You guys remember that dive?
I didn't spend too much time at the Lanche, but did go a few times. I witnessed one naked beer slide. The Lanche was a lot of fun, but nasty. Beer all over the floor, and even dripping off the low ceilings. After a night at the Lanche, your shoes would be an absolute mess and your jeans would be wet and nasty up to about mid-calf.
I'm fortunate enough to say that I spent a few Friday happy hours in the 'Lanche after rugby practice my freshman year in early '97... although it came to a premature end. I was there the last night. They closed early that night because there was a scuffle between the bouncer and a underage student and the police were called. They kicked everyone out before the cops arrived, closed at midnight and never opened again.
That summer, my roommates (who worked in maintenance for the dorms), were in charge of taking all the posters off the wall before demolition started. Needless to say, there were 'Lanche Hamm's and PBR posters that covered my buddy's walls for the next 3 years.

My brother was one of the owners of The Lance from about 1973-79 and my brother-in-law managed the joint for most of that time (first as a student, then for a couple of years after graduation). That's him and his then girlfriend (now wife of 33 years) behind the bar. When he decided it was time to get a "real job" my brother sold the place. Classis MU bar in that it was frequented by locals, bums, students and even some teachers.
The Marquette experience is not complete without the 'Lanche.

I was there that night.
I got a fake ID taken from a bouncer at the Lanche in '96; it was rumored that the MPD was giving the bouncer $5 for every fake confiscated. That somewhat soured me on the experience, although I did enjoy the Silo's of Red, White and Blue for (I think) $2.
The same happened to the guy across the hall (who's name was Dave "the speedskater") at O'Donnell that last night. It sounds like we had the same experience that night. He was actually the guy who started the scuffle outside.

Great story. I know for a fact that Dr. Toby Peters saved a bunch of bricks following demolition.
The vision of Joe Nethen doing a pseudo naked slide in tighty whities is indelibly etched in my mind. As I recall, the slides ended when an undercover cop was in the house when a girl did a naked beer slide. Made national news.
Slides were a fairly regular occurrence in '90-'91. Around bar time, the chants of "Slide, slide, slide" would start and there was often someone drunk enough to oblige the crowd.
Probably should have read the article b/4 I posted. Jumped the gun with the memories flooding back.

On 4th of July a couple years ago, I see Joe at my village's 4th picnic. I go up to him and say, hey, Joe, we used to live at McCormick back in '87. First words out of his mouth were "I didn't beat you up or nothin, did I? Sorry."
Marquette has never been the same since the 'Lanche closed its doors. And if you never did a naked beer slide, you're just plain lame!
