Title: Pomeroy's Overall Team Rating
Post by: MarquetteDano on January 02, 2012, 11:07:27 AM
I have found Pomeroy's various numbers really interesting and useful.  The tempo free stuff really allows you to assess a team's strengths and weaknesses.

However, you are definitely seeing the problem with Pomeroy as a rating system this year.  The Badgers, after losing at home to Iowa and with a 12-3 overall record are still #1 in Pomeroy?

While 12-1 Duke, who has a much more difficult schedule than Wisconsin, is #7!  Marquette at #22?

Yes I know the rating doesn't look at who beat who.  It is more an aggregation of offense and defense giving the quality of your opponent.  However, we are half-way through the season and his team ratings are pretty off at this point.

I think the strength of Pomeroy is in the team's tempo free stats in each area (three point defense, offensive rebounding, etc.) not the team rating.

At least not at this point in the season.

Teams that destroy cupcakes tend to be overated by Pomeroy since he doesn't cap margin of victory.

His rankings look pretty stupid with UW sitting at the top right now.

UPDATE:  Wisconsin as of 1/4/12 ranked #2 despite three home losses and four overall.

Pomeroy may need an adjustment to his formula.
