Title: When and why did MU and UWM stop playing before the 4-1 contract was signed?
Post by: copious1218 on December 23, 2011, 03:32:38 PM
Someone mentioned to me that Bo Ryan stopped the series when he was at UWM.  I had never heard that before so I ask those that followed the program before the turn of the century - when and why was the series stopped?

Thanks.

We played them on December 8, 1998 and did not play them again until November 30, 2007. We did not play them the first year Crean became the coach. I am not sure who stopped the series, but it seemed like Crean did not want to restart it.

Crean cancelled it.

I don't recall the specifics any longer, but the two biggest villains were Haidet and Ryan.  In that order.

"Marquette was afraid of UWM.  The only reason Marquette never lost to us is they only play us when they know we have a crappy team.  When we're good they know ahead of time and avoid us." -UWM

If it was up to UWM we'd leave an open date on our schedule and if they were decent we'd play them that year.  It wouldn't surprise me if this contract ran out, it wasn't renewed and nobody cared for 20 years.  Then one year UWM would win 20 games and we'd have to hear all over again how MU is afraid of the mighty Panthers.

This is sort-of true.  If I remember correctly what happened was that MU offered them a game on the schedule but Bo dilly-dallied about accepting it.  By the time he decided he wanted to play MU had completely filled up the schedule and thus had no room for UWM.  The next year Bruce Pearl came in and I don't think Crean liked him due to Pearl calling him/MU publically, so Crean never offered a game.

Anyone have a link to the epic thread that goes indepth on why we schedule cupcake teams? It had a ton of info and want to show my dad since I had no numbers to back up my argument.
