OK, I know that MU has recently had this run of playing on New Year's Day. And I frankly I find it to be a neat little tradition.
However, it didn't sink in until this morning that this New Year's Day isn't a traditional New Year's Day - it's on a Sunday. This means that MU is tipping at the exact time that the Packers are kicking off. That's really dumb.
IMO, they should have played this game on the morning of Monday the 2nd when most of the traditional college bowl games are being held.

The Packers have everything wrapped up and everyone has DVR anyway ;)
That said, playing on Jan. 2 makes more sense than an afternoon game on MLK Day considering most people have to work that day.
It's also the BE home opener. :o I'm thinking that'll help, right?

I think the MLK game is a feature ESPN 'Big Monday' game. All the students will be back; with no academic pressure because school hasn't started. It should be an incredible atmosphere.
I know many season ticket holders will be working that day. If you can't go, please consider giving your ticket to a deserving high school senior, maybe by way of your local HS guidance office. That's the weekend those kids receive their MU acceptance letters. Think of the "Welcome to MU" message you can send to an excited young guy or girl.

Not if you don't give a crap about the Packers.

Agree. We'll be lucky to have 12,000 actual humans in the building which for a top 15 team opening up a title chase is pretty weak.

No, actually it is still a dumb idea regardless of what your individual rooting interests are.

Why is it dumb? Because you'd rather watch the Packers play a meaningless game on TV as opposed to attending Marquette's conference opener? Like I said before, DVR exists for a reason.

I think it was dumb of the Packers to schedule a meaningless game where Rodgers will play 3 series during Marquette's conference opener.

I love the idea of giving your ticket to a prospective student! I personally will be using my ticket, but will suggest this to others. Things like that really can be the final push for a student's decision, especially when it nicely intersects with the big envelope arriving in his/her mailbox.
We get way less Packer games then we do Marquette games. Unless the Pack announce they are sitting that game out more or less I will be watching the Pack.

Because if you want to create a nice atmosphere at a game, and have a decent television audience, you don't go head-to-head with the Packers.
What a whiny little bitch. Don't go if you want to watch the Packers game. Jesus H. Christ, it's complaints like this that make the fanbase look bad.

So basically you're saying it's going to be a poor atmosphere with low TV ratings? We shall see.

That is exactly what I am saying. I think both would be better if they played it the next day.
This thread is getting fun
The Packers could end up getting "flexed" to 3 PM that day. If the Lions are still playing for a chance to go to the playoffs, that very well could happen. If not, then no way they flex it with neither team having anything to play for.
^
Best Case Scenario
Or both games could suck ass. In which case, bang your old lady.
I think I read this exact same thread back in August. Good to see there's been some developments for fresh discussion. ::)

I can't speak to TV ratings but every game I've been to whilst there was a Packers team playing football at the same time, the atmosphere has sucked. Hard.
Add to that, one (possibly two) of the previous New Year's Day games have not had an impressive atmosphere and you're looking uphill.
Actually, now that I think of it, I've generally been underwhelmed with the Bradley Center crowds for the games I've traveled out to see these past few seasons.
In the end, I overlook it because I'm just happy to see the team in person and I've got my best buddy with me during the game which are two great aspects of my visits.

Hey now, let's not be sexiest. Or bang your ol' man for some people i'm sure. But I concur with 4everwarriors.
This entire conversation (both threads) is one big #WHITEWHINE.

Yeah, your whiny complaints are much more intelligent and tolerable. ::) Is this a pot, kettle thing?
They should have played it at 10 am like they did last year. Of course, that wasn't exactly a barnstorming crowd either, as I recall...

Worst part about the New Year's game isn't overlapping with he Packers, it's the hangover factor. Went to the 10am start a few years back and the entire student section needed a half hour to even realize they were at a big east opener.
I think MU would play New Year's Eve at the BC, like years ago.
The Harlem Globetrotters moved from the Cell to the BC with two shows, so that date of playing for MU is out of the window now.
