Five Point Play V11: LSU loss and non-conference evaluations
Written by: Mark Strotman
Marquette will take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee tonight in hopes of rebounding from its first loss of the year, a Monday night takedown at the hands of LSU, 67-59. The Golden Eagles have two non-conference tilts remaining, home games against Milwaukee and ... Why so much negativity from the CS guys in this post? Blaming the LSU loss on Defense (which I thought they debunked on Tuesday) and saying Junior is a offensively bankrupt... what gives?
I watched the LSU game again last night.
I have not posted since the lost, i normally dont read the board for a day or two after a loss becuase the idiots are out in full force.
I am going to take a different tact than most of the posters have in the sense that i think MU played pretty well.
We played at the 4th best (per the pundits) SEC school at their place in what they billed as their Superbowl and led by 1 with a few minutes left.
Sure I would have liked to see us win and one would hope the 10th ranked team in the nation would go to the 4th best team in the SEC and win but it was not like MU layed an egg in my view...again up 1 with less than 2 minutes left. Obviously the last few minutes were disappointing but the rest of the game was very solid.
A few points....
1. The constant knocks on Junior taking too many shots are completely stupid. Absolutely stupid. All of his shots were good shots. He missed a couple threes and a couple pull up jumpers. He also had a drive down the left side that had he used his left hand would have been a basket, we have discussed his inability to use his left and the ball got blocked. He also scored on a couple of really nice drives and a really nice pull up. His 10 shots were all good shots. Stupid monday morning quarterbacks see he went 3-10 and say that is too many shots. Others look at his 10 shots and see they were all very good shots within the offense, had a few more fallen people would be saying he had a good game.
2. We rebounded the ball extremely well in the second half. The box outs were exeptional. A perceived weakness with out Otule and with their size was not an issue at all in the second half, especially. We ended up with 13 Orebounds versus their 8, and only lost the rebound total by 2. Something none of the so called experts on this board would have imagined we could have done.
3. Not too be to harsh on the kid becuase he is going to win us far more games than he is going to lose for us, but it hink the loss falls squarely on the shoulders of DJO. He was absoltely abyssmal in the second half. Literally every time he touched the ball in the second half, except for his 3 in the corner, he turned it over resulting in a layup for LSU. He was simply terrible. 5 second half turnovers were the difference in the game. Unfortunately Mayo and Blue struggled as well or i dont think DJO would have played as much in the second half as badly as he was playing. One has to think of how much the extended lay-off hurt him with him missing the U of No. Co. game. Really let his team down the last 2 games. We are not a top 20 team with him playing at that level. Hopefully he bounces back quickly.
In, Summary i dont feel we played that badly, were in a position to win and they made big shot after big shot down the stretch. I think Cracked Sidewalks is a bunch of petulant whiners with no real intuition for the game bayonds so statistical methods. I thought our defense and rebounding were really good. They just hit some big shots.
Just before anyone else goes off on Cracked Sidewalks...this particular post is from Paint Touches a.k.a. The Marquette Tribune sports guys.
My issue and I think others are with the cracked sidewalks comments WITHIN the paint touches recap

For example, "I do not understand any game plan that would allow [Junior] to put up 10 shots in a game."
Really? It was Buzz's gameplan to have Junior and DJO take about the same number of shots? Personally, I think Buzz should have gameplanned for Mayo to make at least 3 of his 5 shots, for DJO to not turn the ball over at all and for Hamilton to miss all of his FTs.

I'm with you here Dimes, to a point. While I agree that Junior's shots, weren't bad looks, I still don't want him taking 10 a game. Why, because he so, so limited as a scorer.
He is really easy to guard, because he has no left hand. Beyond finishing at the rim, he doesn't drive to the left. On top of that, he has limited range on his jump shot and quickness (especially laterally).
If he is not passing the basketball, the only consistent way for him to impact the game offensively is driving the basketball (which he does only to right). And, IMO that easy for the defense to take away.
I too love DJO and think he's been brilliant all year except for this last game. It's hard to imagine any team winning a tight one on the road when it's best player gives the ball away six times (5 TOs + missing the front end of a 1 and 1) in the second half of a possession by possession battle.
I think we started both halves with good game plans which allowed us to go up 13-0 and then to take over the tempo and generate some offense in the second half. Credit LSU with a couple mid-half adjustments that countered what we were doing.
One thing thats hard to take is that we didn't adjust to shade, stop, prevent the catch from the two guards who got so hot they couldn't miss. Perhaps that's te cost of the tempo-shifting press.

Well, I wasn't at that point, but am now. It wouldn't have been the first time dimes has totally gone on an off-topic rant - and that's what I figured happened. But now I see, it was totally on-topic. Sorry.

Skat, thanks for reading ... I posted the content for Paint Touches (consistent with the assessment I've had of Junior's game for some time). Bama had a different point of view about the LSU outing, which was core to his recap and assessment of that game. Bama's work is always good, as you know.
Going forward I'll ask the Paint Touches team to attribute contributions to the CS blogger who submits the info for their Five Point Plays. Regards, TB
