Title: Report: Two Big East schools discuss starting a bball-only league
Post by: MARQKC on December 21, 2011, 05:02:26 PM
Anybody know if we're one of them?

I have no problem with a basketball only conference.    But the important thing is keeping the BEast brand.    Leaving and starting a new league is a horrible idea.   Leaving to join an existing hoop-only league gets you into the A-10.     The best scenario for the basketball only schools is for the football schools to leave for other conferences, roll in the best from the A-10, and keep the Big East name.

At the end of the day we will need to end up in a bball only conference. The insanity of the football realignment mess will leave us no other good option.  Imagine a national bball only conference stretching from NYC to Spokane...

Agree with Tower912.   This will keep the football departure $ in the conference with the ability to build the basketball only brand.

For some reason I think one of the school's could be Louisville...I could definitely believe we're one of them.

If you assume that it's only the basketball schools (big if), and that Georgetown is not one of them, then that kicks off process of elimination.

I would say ND is probably not one of them because they need bowl tie-ins for their football program.

That leaves...
STJ, DEP, MARQ, HALL, PROV, NOVA

Like it or not, DePaul, Providence, and Seton Hall are really just along for the ride in this conference. It's debateable whether they spend enough to keep their own athletic programs afloat, much less start an entirely new conference in the age of superleagues and big TV money.

That leaves...
STJ, MARQ, NOVA.

Given those educated guesses, it's not unreasonable to say we're one of the schools.

Nova? They want BCS football. There is no way they would distance themselves from that goal right now.

How could Notre Dame take advantage of the Big East's bowl tie-ins when they don't compete in the Big East in football?????

In exchange for scheduling a certain number of Big East teams, certain bowls can select Notre Dame over a Big East team they would normally be obligated to invite.  Certain meaning every bowl the BE is tied into except its BCS spot, and only its #2 bowl (Champs Sports) every few years.

Except that University of Louisville has football. They are playing in the prestigious Belk Bowl this year.

I wouldn't assume that Georgetown isn't one of them.  Their president's words were crafted pretty carefully.

I would think we are not one of them, because our athletic director is to new to be trying to do something like this. My bet would be Villanova and Georgetown. It would have to be marque schools. Maybe St John's, if it is not one of the above.

Close, I'm guessing Providence and Georgetown.

Ha! What? Nova has had plenty of chances over the past year 1/2 to take that step but hasn't even moved. Logistically, its just too much for them and they know their football program will be left behind anyways when the super conferences do form.

Because there football sucks. Honestly I wouldn't be shocked, but Providence is a possible candidate.

They have been in a BCS bowl in the past decade and came close again this year.  Football is very important to UL.

It ain't Louisville -  they're still convinced they're in the Big XII.

On another note, why does everyone assume its only 2 teams?  The article said "at least two." I hope that ALL the BB schools have had some discussion about the possibility, just in order to be ready if and when the time comes. Also, Notre Dame is a possibility.

This report is really really dumb.

I think it is safe to say that every single remaining BE team except for probably Rutgers and Uconn have discuss at some level the options and feasibility of going to a basketball only conference.

Even Mike broeker in a recent interview talked about how Mu and the other schools have considered the scenario , but have chosen to pursue shoring up the BE as a better reality.

The more I thought about how this doesn't make sense, the more it seemed to make complete sense.

The report makes no sense since it mentioend Temple.  Doesn't Temple want to be in an upgraded football league also?  It sounds like the Plan B discussion that need sto have occurred in case the whole Big East disintegrates with a UConn & Louisville defection.  I highly doubt we're one of the two.
