Title: Marquette back up to #7 in Pomeroy
Post by: bamamarquettefan on December 08, 2011, 01:38:55 AM
I know some get puzzled when Marquette's ratings change when they haven't played, but probably the reason MU nudged up enough to move up to #7 in Pomeroy tonight is Mount St. Mary's almost upsetting Maryland tonight.

Marquette's 55-point win for that game looks better with this game on top of Mount St. Mary's staying within 12 points in all of their losses except for a 29-point loss at Minnesota – which is obviously only about half the margin of their 54-point loss to MU.

The fact that Maryland beat an admittedly depleted Notre Dame by 7 right before beating Mount St. Mary's by 3 makes MUs wide margin more impressive than if Mount St. Mary's had proceeded to lose a bunch of other games by 40 points.

That's great, but wasn't MSM missing 3 starters when we played them? I mean, I'm sure we still would have beat them by a good margin, but probably not 54 points.

Of course, I also don't know if those players are back.

Only the traditional-Euro is back - and he (Kristijan Krajina) is bad and went 0/6, contributing 2 points and 2 turnovers in 29 minutes against Maryland.

It was just a rough second half for Maryland and Nick Faust (though for the game he had 13 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast in 37 min)... they were up by 13 at half.  In the second half MSM only turned it over 4 times (to Terps 9) and eFG%'s were  MSM 55.0%, Maryland 42.0%.

Only 11 turnovers all game for MSM, which is shocking.

Just horrible that Maryland let MSM in a game.  The Mount had never kept it closer than 28 points in a game vs. Maryland in their 6 game history (3 of them coming in the past decade).

Right now, the difference between #6 Missouri and #9 Louisville is 0.0026, so any changes there aren't very meaningful.

As far as MSM, close is great for kenpom, but does nothing for RPI, which we know the committee uses. Losing to Minnesota and Maryland on the road? Fine. Losing to Siena and St Francis at home? Ugh.

I really hope they can pick up a couple Ws this month. Their schedule isn't overwhelming, and entering January 1-12 would make them a clear RPI and SOS drain, though thankfully our only currently really ugly one.

We've been up and down, at 7 at the moment, but did anyone notice who checked in at #1 on Pomeroy this morning following the Kentucky and tOSU losses? I'll give you a clue...we beat them on their court this year  :-X

Makes total sense. Wisconsin is 1 with two losses out of 10 games? Are head to head a nonfactor? Oh well. Just win I guess.

I think it's mainly because of their #1 rated defense and highly efficient offense. Regardless, I like being the only team to beat #1 on their own court.

Head to head is a complete non-factor in the Pomeroy rankings. The only thing that matters to Kenpom is numbers.
