Title: Buzz's comments in the Journal
Post by: NotAnAlum on December 05, 2011, 04:45:28 PM
You never can tell what buzz is going to say or for that matter sometimes what he means but did any one else question his comments in the "Enjoy the ride" article.  He says "I don't know how long I'll get to do this" and "If we shut it down at the end of the year".   Is Buzz talking about this team getting shut down or his he worried about the investigation.  Sounds kind of ominous.

Reading way too much into it. He's just saying he needs to enjoy the here and now cuz he's never had it this good and success can be fleeting.

That occurred to me, too.

But he expanded on it on his TV show and explained that often when coaches get to the position he's in, they are under so much pressure to win and to maintain their success that they forget to enjoy the ride.

I thought I might be reading too much into it.  But then reading the Charles Pierce piece he mentions the Dept of Ed investigation.
Title: I'm way too sensitive about this kind of quote...
Post by: Chicos' Buzz Scandal Countdown on December 05, 2011, 09:47:35 PM
"Nobody knows what goes on on a daily basis with our group. I absolutely love every single one of my coaches, our support staff members and our players. And if we shut it down at the end of the year that will be good enough for me because we'll have had fun."

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/41131/buzz-williams-wants-eagles-to-have-fun-too

... I know I know this quote doesn't mean anything about Buzz taking off after this season, but even the slightest reference has me just a bit uncomfortable. I think I'm just so psyched about the direction of the program and how not-fluky the Bucky win was. Here's to Buzz for another 30 years!

New President, New AD, Old Coach with a few high profile incidents on his watch.  Anything is possible.

Cmon...it was an off-handed comment.  Buzz isn't going anywhere.  The program isn't going to be shut down by the Dept of Ed.  Stop reading so much into everything.

People need to start listening/reading Buzz's quotes all the time.

I've either read or heard Buzz say "I don't know how long I'll get to do this," or something similar at least 5 times already.

It's just Buzz's "aw, shucks" nature coming out.

I don't know, I heard Buzz might be leaving. I think he's interested in becoming an AD rather than a coach, and there's a rumor that the Portland job is opening up.

Why do people insist on reading things out of context and driving up negatives that don't even exist?

Buzz was talking about this on his TV show.  What he is talking about is that he needs to have proper perspective in reaching and maintaining his dream of coaching high-major basketball.  That he, as well as his players, needs to have fun and enjoy himsef (themselves) while striving and working hard to reach his(their) goals.  And, that no matter how things turn out, to be proud and happy.  Posters are reading way way to much into a comment taken out of context.

And remember, we (MU fans) get to enjoy MU Hoops EVERY SINGLE YEAR...no matter who the coach is, no matter who the players are, yes, even no matter how we finish, etc. For 99% of fans, thats how it always has been and always will be.

For Buzz, his staff, and the players - their MU experience changes dramatically after they graduate, move on, etc. They should "enjoy their time" (while still working hard, doing right on and off the court, and of course, winning games  ;D)...at the end of the day, I'd like to believe that they deserve to.

If our new president and new AD don't realize they inherited a winning lottery ticket in Buzz Williams it doesn't bode well for MU's future. But you're right - they could be that dense. Anything's possible.

I can promise you that my interest in MU will significantly wane if the Bob Dukiet era returns, and I have to watch the likes of a Joe Nethen try to compete in the Big East.  That said, I certainly hope Buzz, staff and players enjoy each and every season/year they are at MU...and also believe they deserve to enjoy their time here.  Certainly don't think they deserve to get called choking dogs who pee themselves, etc...or taken to task up and down for occasional losses etc.  As Lenny's Tap just wrote - MU has a lottery ticket in Buzz Williams - and if the administration somehow screws that up...the small donations I make annually will be done.  I have zero confidence in the administrative decisions made by those who are lifers in academia.

Let's all calm down and not read so much into these things. Buzz was simply saying that MU's basketball program will be shut down at year's end by the new AD and Buzz will be joining Dale Sveum in Chicago as the Cubs new first base coach.

This thread should really be taken down, as it serves no purpose and is one crazy mis-characterization of a quote taken out of context!

Take part of a comment from a long statement from Buzz.  Read it out of context and twist its meaning.  Expand on the out of context statement.  And come up with a crazy conclusion.  I guess, this is to be expected, but come on....!

Yeah - that was my take, as well.

"I grew up my whole life wanting to be a high-major coach," said Williams. "And you don't know if you're going to get it. What happens to you if you do get it, you go, 'Man I have to hold on to this (bleep). I've got to hold on to this (bleep).'

Why haven't any of you quoted this? This clearly shows how badly taken out of context the other comments are...Read all the quotes people.. Buzz aint going anywhere...

But is the team being shut down at the end of the year?   Just kidding of course, hence the teal.  But I do agree, please just take this thread down.
