A fantastic rendition by a 9 year old girl today. Was stirring and beautiful. After she was done, Buzz sprints towards her, as she is walking off the court. I think this surprised bo, because he then also went towards her.
I thought the singing was phenomenal, but watching Buzz sprint towards her made an impression on the badger fans I was sitting with. Really glad to have Buzz and his character!
Crean woulda done the same thing.

I said that to my friend, but followed with this seems more genuine.
Speaking of .. the last few years MU has gotten a singer for the National Anthem about half the time. What's up with that? Is it really that hard to coordinate a singer? Couldn't they just have someone from the MU choir on standby when they can't get someone from another group?

Invite that 9 year old!
Buzz is so respectful of fans and opposing coaches. Much more class.
That little girl absolutely nailed the anthem. All the fans in 211 were impressed.
BTW, Bo didn't walk over to congratulate the singer until he saw Buzz go over there.

Yep. That's what I meant by my comment that it surprised bo and he had to go over there. I think she was already in the stands. :D
Personally, I felt embarrassed for the young singer. She had a color guard standing behind her and she chose to make the National Anthem more about her and less about the words and meaning. Hopefully as she continues to grow and mature she will sing in a far more respectful manner in the future.

Um, she is NINE years old. She knew the words. How in the world was it disrespectful?

Oh good lord...
Speaking of pre game activities, the Wisconsin players, when introduced, went to center court to shake hands with their "opposing" player. The MU players ignored this. Am I reading into this too much?

Well, if she knew the words, then right there she's way ahead of many singers called on to perform the national anthem. :-\

Yes. There is a thread about it on the scout board with more discussion.

Yeah, you and all the Badger fans in the stands... They called us 'punks' because we ignored them before the game. Nothing wrong with having an tough attitude, when you can back it up on the court- especially vs. UW. Plus, we shook hands after the win.

I thought the badger players, with their snarkey wave, point, fake hand shake ... looked like fools. I liked that MU did that. This is a UW thing, doesn't mean other teams need to participate.

Our players didn't want anything to do with them before the game. They were so focused. Although we didn't shake there hands and were called "punks" they almost looked worse. In the end the better team won.
BTW, Bo gave Vander a little bit of a hug after the game in the line....and Bo never talks much to the opposing players in the line.

I agree. There's also The Gold 'n Blues and The Naturals. There's plenty of talented singers at Marquette not to have someone at every home game.
Amazing and class act for Buzz to give her some props. You could see Buzz was moved during the song.

That girl could freaking sing.. end of story!
Was it on the BTN? Must have missed it.
If the singer was 29 years old I do not think praise would have been thrown her way. If you like kids singing she was entertaining, but not a performance I need to hear a second time.

Sultan---I get the point. Maybe old fashioned but I'll take a more conservative performance by an adult. Knowing the words and knowing the meaning are two different things to me.
If a 9 year old went out did a plain old straight on one handed dunk at halftime would that have been unimpressive?

Francis, alert.
Why even broadcast the Little League World Series? Unless they're stepping into 95 MPH pitches for the team, what's the point?
Can we get back to our discussion of the JFK assassination and 911's impact on MU hoops, please?
Aaron Stecker's daughter.
I didn't see the anthem, but I went to Wisconsin-Minnesota college hockey game a few weeks ago and a 9 year old girl sang. It was unbelievably good. I am guessing it is the same girl.

Just saw the link of the girl singing the National Anthem. Not sure at all what your post is about. I would be kind of embarrassed to have posted something that wasn't true about a 9 year old girl that did a great job singing the National Anthem.

As a follow up to the question above, about MU not having any singers doing the Anthem this year.. I got an email yesterday from MU "Thank you for attending the game.." and it asked if there was anything that would improve the fan experience.
So I replied to athletics@marquette.edu, and asked about the lack of Anthem singers this year.
Brian Bowsher responded: "Good question. We prefer the pep band because they can consistently perform the anthem in a set length of time, whereas different vocalists can range in time from about 2-3 minutes. While it doesn't seem like a big difference, TV dictates tipoff time to the second, so having this certainty in the anthem helps us schedule all pregame announcements, videos, etc."
So, I guess that means MU will never hear another Anthem singer, since every game is televised in some fashion.
One wonders how MU did it all the previous years .. and how UW is able to get a 9 year old to pull this off .. or that the Big10 network isn't as interested in split second timing.

The other good thing about the BTN is they allow 2 and a half hours between games. So if the first game goes over a bit or into overtime you don't miss any or very little of the subsequent game. Nice when the schools dictate to the network rather tha the other way around.

They could pre-record and lip synch it in the alloted time like the professionals do on Saturday Night Live
This surprises me. I have my brother in law buy some group ticket packages for me every year, and something stood out this year. He was told that if you buy a group ticket package in the numbers below, MU will let you do the following:
25 tickets or more – high five players in the tunnel
100 or more – sing the national anthem
I have dreamed of the day where we buy 100 tickets to a game and then get a group to sing the national anthem beforehand. It would be, dare I say... epic in the scope of the awkwardness and horror. Perhaps it was all just a fun dream.
In other news... maybe it is still true and we do a MUScoop group purchase next year? Message board field trip?

This problem doesn't exist if they invite an established singing group such as the Gold 'n Blues. Book 'em, make them aware of the time restraints and they will rehearse to make sure their rendition fits.
Otherwise, I am fine with them refusing to use those would-be Mariah Careys that turn our anthem into a 5 minute display of their "talent" by doing endless runs and other "vocal interpretations".
kick dr. blackheart in the nads and he can do a good "Mariah"

I'm just guessing, but I bet that while they'll let you sing the national anthem, it won't be the version that'll be televised. Another reason to give the anthem to the band, they'll just be reprising, not singing it, if MU lets a gaggle of average fans sing it first.
...and while I'm at it, I may as well back up Ziggy's month old comments in regards to Ms. Stecker with a photo:

Hey now...Mariah and I can belt one out like one another...unfortunately, it is our belt size...but we do share expansive ranges. Thank god for pajama jeans.
The 2-3 minute window is doable.
MU just needs to tell them to make it 2 minutes or less! ;)
