Title: Team Defense
Post by: tower912 on December 03, 2011, 07:18:54 PM
Superb defensive effort today.   Was it really a change in philosophy?    We played much more like UW usually does, staying at home.     Did Buzz do it strictly for this game?    Did it just seem different because of the discipline and sets of Wisconsin not giving as many opportunities to gamble?     Has this team turned the corner defensively or are the first 7 games outliers?    Is it a slightly different scheme, better understanding from everyone, really talented freshmen?    Did Junior missing the game actually BENEFIT our defense?

All of this because I cannot remember a more disciplined defensive effort from a Buzz coached team.   I want to know if this is what I can expect this year or not.

Today was incredible. We forced 12 turnovers, yet only 3 steals. I was astounded by our discipline. Every time I saw a wide-open shooter, it seemed like someone was rotating out to them before I could yell "cover him, goddamnit!!!" I was afraid that their pace would be our undoing. The thing is, we were actually content to play at their pace. It seemed like UW was expecting us to be riskier, to give them the wide-open look, or to gamble and miss, and we just didn't do it. Because of that, they didn't really know how to exploit us.

Without a doubt, the best defensive performance I've ever seen from a Buzz Williams team.

Agreed Brew I caught myself doing the same thing a couple times when Brust and Bergrenn caught it and before I could get angry there was a close out. Best rotation I have seen out of one of Buzz's team, here's to hoping it will last all season.

Also I can't say this enough...Mayo is a stud.

Our team looks to be in superb physical condition, even DG. No looked really spent the whole game.

Another advantage of going 10 deep.

Incredible game!  Marquette played great defense throughout the game and won the game on their defense.  They looked dominant and much more athletic that Wisconsin.  And, Buzz outcoached Bo, perhaps for the first time.  MU's freshman played great and contributed significantly to the win.  D. Wilson played great defense on Taylor.  Mayo plays like a veteran and is a winner.  Anderson played hard to win.  He had several key rebounds.  Jamil Wilson looked good.  DJO plays like an All American.  Thank you for the early Christmas gift Marquette!!!!

Incredible defense today by everyone. The defense was so intense throughout the game. The fans were screaming at some of our intense defense and thinking it was a foul. Somethings just never change about those other fans.

Did anyone else see when we were on defense every time, Buzz and the bench were screaming five? or something? at the team with like 15 seconds left in the shot clock? Anyone know if he has done that before? What would it mean?

Buzz always says in the last 10 seconds of the shot clock (and that was what they targeted), that MU had to be prepared for the back pick and swing to the open 3.  MU did not give up many clean opportunities late in the shot clock like they had last year.

That was lock down defense at its best in my opinion. We frustrated the normally furstrating Badgers and beat them at their game. Our team has gifted athletes and great work ethic.

UW before playing UNC and MU shot like 40% + from 3pt and was down in the low 20s against the Heels and Warriors. I think this defensive mindset/discipline/athleticism to close off the open late shot-clock looks has a lot to do with that.
