Title: What offense do we run?
Post by: ErickJD08 on November 28, 2011, 10:10:13 PM
Can someone remind? I started a thread thinking our half court offense is just not there. Maybe I am not watching the right stuff.

I see our guys pass around for about 10 seconds and then one of our athletes takes a defender off the dribble to get the defense to collapse. That is why we struggle with a good zone.  I rarely see a player get the ball and then really know what they were doing with the ball next.

I saw one time in the second half where Blue got the ball at the FT line and immediately dumped it down to Jae for the and 1. Those plays come so far and few between.

Am I seeing something different? What offense do we run? Any way I can look up the offense?  Thanks.

We run a very effective offense in terms of efficiency - one of the tops in the country.  Obviously points in transition are a huge part of this MU team's arsenal.  Offense has never been the problem under Buzz, and it certainly doesn't look like it will be this year.  As for our zone offense - we beat Syracuse and their vaunted zone 2 times last year.

If there is an area to nitpick on this team/Buzz - it would be with their 3 point FG defense and offensive rebounds yielded...

I believe you would look up 4 out 1 in motion to get a general idea against man to man. I haven't paid enough attention to see what they do differently against the zone.

Scoring points efficiently has never been a problem with a Buzz team, he's done it for enough years straight not to be worried about it. Zone offense usually comes around later (See Cuse x 2, Seton Hall). He mentioned that they don't practice much against a zone because they don't use it themselves. I would expect our ppg and offensive efficiency to drop a little come conference season, but still be in the elite category.

They don't have much for set plays, the out of bounds stuff looks a little better this year though so far.

Now, the pressure D stuff leading to turnovers (good), bad shots (good), open 3s (bad), offensive rebounds (bad), etc.... that is debatable.

Edit- I guess that's basically the same thing Ners said

I guess dribble penetration when someone fills the weak side post is part of the offense. Good stuff.

i wish they would run a 3 man weave up top to create better angles to penetrate and a little more motion sometimes i feel like their offense is a little to stagnant

The "3 man weave" and the "dribble 40 feet from the basket and launch a 3 as the shot clock expires" were my two most unfavorite offensive schemes run by our previous leader.

We used to.   And people complained that there was no scheme, simply weave until somebody made a move or jacked a 3.   I still couldn't tell you what the zone offense was under Crean.

But, but guys, the playbook was like a thousand pages thick.  Offensive genius was stored in there.

Offensive rankings under Buzz:
2009: #9
2010: #22
2011: #22
2012: #10

Offense is the least of our problems

The thing with a lot of "modern" motion offenses is that they look disorganized...but there are keys that players use to determine where to be on the floor.  I was at a dribble-drive-motion clinic a couple of years ago, and that is much more complex than I used to give it credit for.

The 3 man-weave was our main offensive set until this year and I was embarrassed that my college team used it. The 3 man weave stops beings effective by high school.

That's one of the reasons I'm so happy/enthusiastic about this year. They seem to have thrown out that grade school playbook and now use high post-screens, high-low post options, isos and, most importantly, off-the-ball movement. Jae gets most (if not all) of his points flashing up, cutting, and finding holes in the defense. He didn't really have the freedom to do that before.

Before this year, our 3 guards would spend 20-30 seconds trying to penetrate, and if that failed, they would panic and force up a shot. Does anybody really miss a Dwight Buycks 25 footer?

This year is different, and its finally fun and enjoyable, rather than nerve-wracking and sad, to watch this team score

Is this a post from the wayback machine or something?  We weren't running the 3 man weave last year....or at any time under Buzz.  Our halfcourt offense has been very efficient since Buzz has gotten here.

We absolutely ran the 3-man weave last year. I have the bald spots in my head to prove it
