Title: ESPN Milwaukee has Malware?
Post by: 77ncaachamps on November 21, 2011, 01:30:16 PM
I was heading over to ESPN Milwaukee to listen to some good ol brewtown radio (does that even exist?) for MU stuff when Google Chrome warned me that they have potential malware on their site.

First time it's let me know about it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes,
It happened to me.  I went to ESPN radio when the TV Video feed when out and I couldn't stand their audio any longer.
That is a BAD Virus that it loads.  Hides your Internet favorites, steals passwords etc.

Now you have me worried about listening to the game. How worried should I be? How about if I use my MacBook?

Did you have to download anything to get it?  Or did it just pop up?

How would I know if I got it?  I listened to 540 on Friday night for the game and had to download the newest adobe reader to listen.  I downloaded it from the site  Would this have given me the virus?  I did not notice anything strange on my comp after the game.  Thanks.

You can work around this by going to the main espn radio site (ESPNradio.com,) click listen live, then choose the 540 Milwaukee out of the station directory.

The company that hosts our website had a problem with a virus-infected banner ad on a site that shares a server with ESPNMilwaukee.com. It has been removed/corrected and the site is back up and running, sanitized for your protection. This was an inconvenience yesterday, but the good news is that the system protected our readers from damage.

Thanks for reading/listening to ESPNMilwaukee.com

My computer crashed trying to access the site on Sunday night. The hard drive is toast.

That is just a hardware issue, not an issue with any website. It would have failed had you tried to access google.com, amazon.com or anything else. Just dumb luck I guess.

Sorry, D-List... nice try to spin this, but your ESPN malware infected my pc and cleaned out all the files. Tons of work lost since my last backup... a lot of data to recreate and the time and cost of fixing this. Very disappointed that an operation of your size let this out. Doubt if I'll try to listen to listen via your stream or visit site in future.

I think I have made my last visit to ESPN Milwaukee's website. I got one of these malware viruses from a banner ad before, and it was an enormous pain in the a$$.  I thought my hard drive was toast, but as it turned out, it just hid most files so it looked wiped out.  I somewhat recovered, but it was a drawn out mess.

Thanks for posting this warning.  If I am advised that a site that isn't reasonably secure, I don't screw with it.  It's a shame too, b/c ESPN MKE is  where I catch the shows with Jim M and Buzz.

Just listen through TuneIn.  They have apps for your phone too that I use to listen to ESPN 540 when I'm on the move.  It's better than 540 over the air when you're driving around downtown MKE :p

Not really! So ESPN540 puts out an apology about an "inconvenience" with a "shared" server. Sounds like MAJOR SPIN to me from the MU flagship about a major listenership problem. ESPN has infected MU listeners PC. That is more than an inconvenience - it is a major fu.

Not really!  I called them (ESPN 540) several hours ago, as well as emailed ESPN540 earlier, with nary a response. I simply asked if their IT experts might have an option as to how to find "hidden" files that their malware creates. After all, they have publicly admitted and apologized for the problem they created.

Does anyone have any info on how to deal with the fixing the hidden files problem?... a next step that I can do [before I start running up bills with Geek Squad or the like]? Thanks, in advance, for your advice.

If it is OK can I ask what the advice was for others who may have gotten the same thing?  Thanks.

This was my advice...

1st, install Malwarebytes from this website: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/)
2nd, update your antivirus software, I just use MS Security Essentials and it has treated me fine so far. That and staying off the really sicko pages - ZFB and 4ever know what I am talking about.
3rd, use Chrome or Firefox as they often will block you from going to infected sites.

After you have Malwarebytes installed, run the software. It will either a) be able to get rid of the nasty little bug or b) tell you which one you have so you can do a google search and find out how to kill the critter.

I am by no means an IT expert, but this is my basic protection model.
