How can they choke? It's not March!
Long Beach State is really good this year. This wasn't a huge surprise.
Pitt almost lost to Rider the other day though. That would have been a huge upset.
Wow. LBS did shoot 59%... I didn't see the game, so I can't tell if that's terrible defense or an unconscious offense. Probably some of both. Either way, definitely a concern for Pitt that their bench had a whole 2 points.
First, awesome that two defectors (WVU and Pitt) have both lost early at home to Mid Majors (and that is pushing the Mid Major designation).
Second, the Big East is for the taking this year....
- Pitt is down from last year
- Looeyville is down from last year esp given their injuries
- Nova is clearly down from last year
- St. John's has talent but should not be as good as last year
- UConn should be good but no Kemba Walker
- Notre Dame is not as good as last year, not even close
- West Virginia is not as good as last year
Marquette is really setup for a top four finish if they can stay heathly.

Some of both. LBSU killed Pitt in the Paint, and that was pretty much the difference in the game.
Some pretty good outside shooting by LBS as well . Pitt trailed most of the game
We really have a shot at a top 4 finish and even higher.
Pitt cant play defense at all. They didnt against rider either and not much depth. Uconn is solid but Im still not sold on them after seeing them play. Syracuse seems like the biggest threat as most expected as they looked good against cupcakes and have depth to match us. Cincy is real solid but again play about 7 guys. Lousiville could be real good, well see how injuries effect them.
I like our position right now.
To all, Long Beach has 4 players that must be seniors that have played 90 some games together. They have a point guard to kill for, he had the highest scoring night of his career. In
the first half Long Beach hit 67% of there shots. They were unconscious. They recruited a JC kid that is outstanding. After seeing there talent, I am not sure MU would beat them
either. Playing at Pitt, considering they have won like 56 non-conference, was pretty amazing. Pitt played well, and will get better. Very athletic, no real post presence like they had in
the past. The Birch kid reminded me of your typical over rated McDonalds All-American, barely played. They had a 5 or 6 recruiting class that is way over rated. Pitt is beatable, but
still have Gibbs and he is really good, and played well in the game.
Looking at the box score Pitt had 4 double figure scorers and no one else who scored more than 2 points a game. It reminds of MU a few years ago when we had 4 good players and no one else.

Sure he was 4-of-9 from downtown, but shooting 38% (33% from 2) from the field isn't pretty especially if you shot the ball 21 times in 36 minutes. Plus he didn't go to the line so his 20 was all from the field.

A lot of misses came in the last 2 minutes when he would bring the ball up and just throw up a shot trying to get them back into the game. Wasn't falling.
I'm guessing if teams like West Virginia and Pitt played Mount St. Mary's and Norfolk State they would have 2 blowout wins just like Marquette does. Do they look like world beaters right now? No. But we're 2 weeks into the college basketball season. We'll see how these teams are playing come Big East season. I'm not ready to make conclusions about how good a team is based on a 1-1 overall record.
Pitt played extremely soft in this game.
Big East Gods punishing West Virginia and Pitt for leaving....Cuse, your up next

Long Beach also has a pretty good coach.
Is this MUScoop? ?-( I have a hard time understanding why people are making excuses for a top 10 ranked team who got worked. Pitt who had a 58 game home winning streak against non confrence teams i believe, shouldn't have lost. There are no excuses. But that's just my opinion.
I'd like people on Scoop to remember, IF we have a bad loss this season like years past, please don't freak out! It's only one game!

I'd like people to remember if marquette loses multiple games that shouldn't have been losses, it is ok to give your opinion.
Didn't Pitt lose a pre-conference game to Indiana last year? Didn't stop them from getting a #1 seed and it didn't keep the Hoosiers out of the Big 10/11/12 basement.
Marquette should bolt to the West Coast Conference!

I hear what you are saying but I will predict right now that Pitt does not even get a two seed in the NCAA tourney this year. They are simply not as good as last year.
IIRC the Indiana game was not at home last year. It was, at best, a netural site game. Big difference between that and losing at home.
We have a solid, solid chance to finish above Pitt in the Big East standings this year.

That would never happen!

I watched the game last night. That was no choke on Pittsburgh's part. That team was ferocious and tough as nails. Remember Long Beach State when you are filling out your brackets. Pitt's bigs were too slow. There smalls were overmatched.

I would say I am not hanging onto the trunk but also not on the limb! Many pundits predicted a two seed for Pitt this year. I just don't see that happening.

It seems the Big East gods are being especially tough on 'Cuse.
LSU loses to Northwestern.
